Community post r/CPTSDFreeze Wiki

I just finished writing a first draft of the wiki, which can be accessed via the Community Guide link you should see at the top of the sub (tap "See more" if you are on a mobile device), or directly via this link:

https://www.reddit.com/r/CPTSDFreeze/wiki/index/

The first draft is mostly a mashup of bits from various books (which are linked at the bottom of the wiki) while trying to simplify the language a little.

I see the wiki as a collaborative effort so please add ideas, suggestions, links to resources you have found useful etc. to this thread and hopefully we can work some of them into the wiki.

Also let me know if you find the wiki too complicated, or not in-depth enough, or badly worded etc.

Edit: I updated the Wiki on August 2nd, 2026. It is hopefully a little clearer now, and I removed some outdated science. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

Trigger warning What is structural dissociation, really? NSFW

Usually when we come across structural dissociation, it is an overt description of DID, partial DID, or OSDD. Many different voices and personalities inhabiting one body, obvious divisions between personalities, maybe different voices and clothing styles or something else you can easily see in a video or a Reddit post.

The contents of these videos or posts may or may not include conflicts between alters or parts, but they usually depict parts as highly differentiated and verbal, and they tend to focus on the dynamics between alters/parts as each lives its own, individual life inside the shared body.

This can sometimes miss the one core aspect of structural dissociation which is always present, regardless of how it otherwise manifests:

Internal conflict.

Structural dissociation is often stated to arise from lack of integration and abuse. This is true, but not very nuanced: almost every psychiatric condition involves some form of lack of integration, and many survivors of even severe childhood abuse are not significantly dissociative.

At the heart of structural dissociation lies an irreconcilable conflict between three action systems. These are biological networks stretching back millions of years in evolutionary time: their roots are visible across mammalian species.

One operates on the daily life action system.
One on the defence action system.
One on the autonomy action system.

The daily life action system handles social engagement, eating, sleeping, work. This action system focuses on getting through the day, handling the tasks that life throws at us. The core longing in this action system is to take care of our needs.

The defence action system handles threats. It builds on the mammalian defence cascade: orientation to danger, cry for help, fight, flight, freeze, submission, collapse. All mammals share these functions, we all rely on them for survival. The core longing in this action system is to get rid of threats.

The autonomy action system focuses on autonomy and control. It aims to control our internal environment, and to some extent our external environment, to influence the outcomes in our lives, to exercise agency, and to avoid helplessness. The core longing in this action system is to feel in charge.

Every living person has all three action systems. They are intended to work together to handle the complexities of life: basic bodily needs, social engagement, daily tasks (daily life action system), the threats we face (defence action system), and being autonomous beings (autonomy action system). All three are vital parts of being alive.

Structural dissociation is an irreconcilable developmental conflict between these three systems.

That's it. Structural dissociation is not specifically a number of different alters with different names, or lack of childhood memories, or an inner world where different parts live, or different voices in your head. Those can all arise from the core irreconcilable action system conflict, but the exact manifestation of that conflict varies a lot. In a majority of cases, the parts arising from this conflict are well-hidden.

So what does the core conflict look like?

Your "getting on with daily life" action system tries to get on with daily life.
Your defence action system keeps interrupting it as it reacts to threats.
Your autonomy action system keeps interrupting it as it pushes for control.

What does the getting on with daily life system do? It tries to deal with people, studies, work, paying bills, eating, sleeping. "Just let me get on with my life" it says, "I have things to do."

What does the defence action system do? It reacts to threats. In structural dissociation, it was "trained" in a fundamentally threatening environment, so anything reminding it of those developmental threats triggers it – up to and including your very own body's basic existence. If your developmental environment was one where your needs, your distress, or your very presence were treated as a problem, then simply existing in a body that has needs can register as a threat.

Some parts of us residing in the defence action system flee. Some fight. Some submit. However they do it, the one thing they all have in common is, they deal with threats, and because of how "trauma time" works, the threats they see are fundamentally a combination of both the past and the present. A voice, an action, lack of action, anything in the present that reminds them of a developmental threat calls them to activate their defences.

The autonomy action system, meanwhile, wants to be in control. Have power. Not be beholden to these old threats, or current demands, or all these feelings, or the freezing, or anything else the defence action system keeps throwing in its path. In the power dynamics it grew up with, it wants to occupy the position of the powerful. It sees the world in dualistic terms: There is only power and weakness, and I must be powerful.

Why do these action systems end up in conflict with one another?

Because they repeatedly faced an irreconcilable developmental dilemma: The person I need for survival is a threat.

The daily life action system knew you must attach to a caregiver. A young child will not survive without one; no mammalian young will. The daily life action system must suppress anything that gets in the way of that.

The defence action system knew your caregiver was a threat. You must overcome, or flee, or pacify the threat, otherwise you will not survive.

The autonomy action system knew you had no power. They had power, you were weak as all children are next to an adult, you must become strong and powerful.

The daily life action system said: Go away, do not react to the caregiver, I must attach to survive.
The defence action system said: Run! Scream for help! Fight! Submit! This is the end!!!
The autonomy action system said: I will do no such thing. They have power. I will obtain it. I will become powerful. Stop bothering me with emotions.

Because the core conflict arose at and persisted throughout the earliest stages of life in reaction to people you were literally dependent on for survival, this internal conflict has been at the core of your very self from the get go.

And that is what sets the most entrenched and pervasive forms of structural dissociation apart from other forms of psychopathology: It began at the very beginning, before you had language for it, before you had a continuous sense of self, before you had any reference point for what "normal" feels like.

The daily life action system needs to suppress awareness of this. To get on with daily life, it needs to not be aware of the other action systems. The more we inhabit our daily life self and the less we inhabit our other selves, the less it feels like anything. This is why it is not only possible, but relatively common to live for years and decades with little awareness of these internal dynamics.

We might notice the defence action system when it intrudes into our daily lives with its panic, anxiety, anger, submission, and freeze. Our daily life self tends to find this a hindrance to its mission of having our daily needs met, so it redoubles its efforts to suppress awareness in return. If you have been spacing out while reading this, that's probably why.

The autonomy action system tends to focus on external power imbalances between itself and others. The defence action system's intrusions make this much harder: It is difficult to be strong and autonomous when you keep being hijacked by fears, anxiety, and panic. This makes the autonomy action system direct its control attempts at the defence action system: Be quiet, go away, stop detecting threats, I am the threat. I will control you.

Where does all of this leave us as people?

Angry and focused on power when operating from our autonomy action system.
Panicked, fearful, and submissive when operating from our defence action system.
Spaced out, fatigued, and confused when operating from our daily life action system.

And, most importantly, yo-yoing between and blending these states with little to no oversight, only noticing what our current state cannot provide:

  • Awareness of what is actually happening inside us, when operating from the daily life action system;
  • Safety when operating from the defence action system; and
  • Power when operating from the autonomy action system.

Depending on your own unique developmental trajectory, this spectrum runs from confusion and fog in daily life, panic and submission in defence states, and anger in autonomy states all the way to fully differentiated self-states with their own names, memories, and ways of being in the world. Regardless of where on the spectrum we are, the one thing we have in common is very little oversight capable of detecting and remembering the states and the shifts between them.

The goal of treatment is not to overcome any of these systems. All three are vital. The goal is to bring them into communication with each other so that the conflict does not have to run the show.

Discussion Not feeling like yourself when you’re around others or have a busy day

I don’t know exactly how to explain this. I don’t mean this in a context of hyper vigilance or feeling unsafe. I mean I feel like I’m losing myself when I have a busy day (just studying all day by myself) or if I’m just out and about going from one class/event to another or constantly socializing. Because I’m not constantly thinking of my thoughts, feelings, inner world, etc like I do on most normal days and that’s what I have done most days for years of my life now. Anything other than that makes me feel like I’m losing myself and feels so weird even if I’ve had a somewhat happy and fulfilling day. It’s like I need to be all alone most of the time, doing nothing and be extremely self aware of my existence and constantly observing myself to feel like myself and have a sense of self. It leaves me in this weird place where I’m not fully happy isolating (because I feel somewhat empty), but I’m also extremely reluctant to change it because it’s so comfortable and familiar and any change feels disorienting and akin to losing myself. Why does this happen?

Musings an inescapable mind and life

every day feels like i was born yesterday. the world is forever new and somehow harder to navigate the older i get. i’d be lying if i said i didn’t fight to escape this type of suffering. and not to be dramatic but it’s like every where i turn i’m met with a wall instead of an open door. i continue to compare myself to my peers or anyone really. they seem to have it all figured out. i guess i have to accept that i’m just going to be stuck in this waiting room of my life. but i want so badly for someone to wake me up from the reality that feels so much like a dream. i wish it was just a dream.

Vent [trigger warning] feeling really down - needing support NSFW

i could use some support im feeling really down. since my family is abusive, and the friends i had were shit (i have no friends anymore), i was thinking of coming to you guys for support. hopefully ill get it.

today has been really shit. specifically due to interpersonal interactions.

i was playing an online game today with a bunch of people. its not one where people are usually super disagreeable, ive definitely had good interpersonal interactions on it. but ive also had negative ones, especially today. i saw one person being super rude to another person for no reason, so i stood up for that person. but then the person i stood up for randomly ghosted me??

then this random person started attacking me, being rude to me in messages. so i responded back, and they were still rude out of pettiness and just general meanness and cruelty. so i blocked them.

i then asked other people to report that one random person. they were not rude to me in front of others, just in personal messages lol :///. i did this bc im trying to not let myself be stomped on. i recieved literally no support. 1 person asked me what happened, and i told them the gist of it. then they just enabled, saying, "ya unforutnately stuff like that happens on the internet" or something like that. they then confirmed the fact that they were enabling by saying that "blocking is a big deal it can get someone suspended or banned," then they immediately left.

i asked kept asking others to report that one person. then other people were also randomly rude when they asked me what happened. one person asked me what happened rather rudely, and i didnt respond immediately, as i didnt know if they were talking to me. someone replied, saying i was probably just a bot. i asked if they were talking to me, and got more rude replies "you?????" i said i didnt respond immediately because i was on another tab. they were like "son im crine" then they left immediately, along w the person who thought i was a bot. got zero support, people only banned together to tear me down. which is so familiar.

when i asked more people to report, someone said "was it deserved tho? the bullying?" then left.

throughout the entire interaction, there were tons of others around and not a single person showed non-abusive interest, or stood up for or defended me. no one spoke up to say that they had reported that person. literally no one had any compassion.

throughout the entire thing, people who said rude stuff either did it in personal messages probably to avoid public scrutiny (not that anyone would have done anything lol). or they did it in front of others and left immedaitely because they were COWARDS. literally wtf is wrong with people?

other people think this behavior is only on the internet, but the internet really just seems like a microcosm for greater society. i think those with cptsd know this well, and understand just how awful people truly are. people are rude/abusvie, everyone else enables. the abusers are complete cowards who leave immedaitely, as everyone is only concerned with their short-term pleasure. if someone or something makes them feel bad or "stressed" (because they are the assholes), they just leave immediately, no matter how unsupportive, uncompassionate, or dishonorable their actions are. if they show "concern" its really just desire for tEa/drama. if they interact with you, its just to tear you down to feel better about themselves. even if they do slimy, dishonorable shit like be randomly rude to people, they are also cowards who only care about feeling "good" as they believe they are not obligated to give a shit about others or to not be assholes, but they are too cowardly to back the shit they say up. so they just leave immediately to get the stress of conflict over with as fast as possible, and reinforce their pettiness and egos by having the last word. they have zero self reflection, as any opportunity that could force them to grow is not one they will take. since theyre just too above giving a shit about others, and too arrogant to believe theyre not god, or in the right, in the first place. everyone else enables because why should they give a shit about someone whose not a regulatory tool for them, or themselves. no one else asked me about the bullying or anything. everyone just enabled. if this happneed in real life, i can already imagine the enablers saying somethign like "oh but they just wouldnt want to bring harm from the shit person onto themselves" but this was online. the real reason no one helps anyone is because theyre devoid of compassion, selfish, and uncaring, not because theyre well reasoned. i bet those people who are assholes beleive theyre "good people" who like to stand up for marginalized groups. the underdog. the oppressed. or that theyre righteous in their actions someone (cosntant excuses for hurting others). and nothing will make them realize they are the exact opposite of that. because the type of arrogance required to believe youre morally justified doing shitty things to those who dont deserve it is the type of arrogance that makes you beleive youre a good, or justified-in-their-actions, type of person. just like in real life.

this is literally most people. i hate it here. send the fucking asteroid.

it sucks because last december especially, that game was one i went to to feel safer and have good interactions w chill people. but instead of escaping reality, reality was reflected back to me 10x over.

i hate it here. it feels like people constantly say that if everyone around you sucks, youre the problem. i just heard that said today. or that if you have the reasoning i do and just applied that to greater society, youre "overthinking" or just plain wrong bc people secretly have "good intentions" (its funny how you never see the goodness manifest, though ://). where is any support? i have always been innocent, and always torn down by everyone. im the scapegoat of the universe. i try my hardest to just be a good person who helps others. like today. and what did i get for interacting with others? abuse/rudness, and enabling. just like in real life. this behavior i experineced today is the story of my life. everyone treats me like shit, everyone enables, and i am the scapegoat of the universe. i not only do not hurt peoiple, i actively help them. because i care about them and how they feel. and this is how im treated.

people will say im looking too into it. no, i just see reality and people for what they are. people are machines that can be taken apart and figured out. those who believe others are "secretly good" or "loving deep down" are delusional. because human behavior extrapolates. if youre constantly shit, or do egregious shit once, your belief systems are not as honorable or good as you think they are. it only makes sense that shit behavior comes from shit belief systems. not shit behavior coming from secretly-good-but-misunderstood belief systems. to suggest the latter makes no sense.

i can imagine enablers saying "oh but theyre good people and just have bad days." which is funny, because i dont want to hurt people. i myself havent done anything like that when i actually cared about how i made the other person feel. which, I CARE ABOUT HOW I MAKE OTHERS FEEL, so i think about what i say/do before i do it.

despite how shit my life is, i never use it as an excuse to mistreat innocent others. none of the abusers or enablers understand how much kindness, honor, nobility, self awareness/reflection, or humility it takes to be this way despite my shit life. in fact, they would just believe they themselves are like this bc they believe it in their core belief systems so it must be true :////. lies. they would beleive this despite the fact that they lash out and mistreat innocent others and they DONT have conditions like cptsd due to a lifetime of being abused/neglected/tortured (me). most of them have at least 1 person, or believe they do (to regulate to/with). most dont have anhedonia, they are capable of feeling something good in connection to others, as most humans are (unlike me). yet they are still so ugly internally that they spew their garbage onto others if others dont meet their short term pleasure/validation needs. or just others who are there for them to tear down. i still have to deal with the consequences of their inferiority.

im honestly so tired of people using covid as an excuse for lack of empathy. like, i went through covid too as a teen. in fact, i went through MUCH MORE damaging shit than covid (according to how it impacted me psychologically) and i STILL am open towards and kind to others.

despite my desire to hurt others, my misanthropy, my constant anger/bitterness due to how the world treats me daily. i still try to be kind. and i am kind.

i know some of you understand.

im just so tired.

Question Could being physically unable to employ fight or flight contribute to developing a freeze response?

I haven't consciously experienced this as I have no memories of it anymore, but I was told that when I was a very young child my dad would lock me up or hold me in a stranglehold if he was fed up with me. Thinking about it, this would make it quite literally impossible to employ either fight or flight. Could this explain me having a freeze response for as long as I can remember?

Vent [trigger warning] I cut off contact with my parents. I need some advice.

Hello,

My parents were my abusers. I left my home back in 2020 after a huge fight, my father had drank a lot and he was physically and verbally menacing me because I wouldn't eat dinner at the same time as my parents. Growing up we reunited during dinner, because it was the only time of the day we were all home and it was always during dinner that my mother started being abusive out of nowhere. I still struggle with eating disorders to this day because of this. Anyway, I forgave them back in 2025 and let them into my life again. Now I am so completely burned out and I sent them a text saying they need to respect my needs for distance. They didn't answer, but I know the silent treatment is meant to make me come back.

But here's the thing, I was so sure of myself 5 hours ago and now I am spiraling because I start thinking about how I am going to be alone and on my own for holidays like Christmas, how I have no social support as I don't have any friends and I don't know how to survive without having any relationships. I think my parents are aware of this, that's why the silent treatment works so well. I am feeling trapped because I want to talk to them but when I talk to them they're suffocating me.

Any advice to make me not go back to them? Does it get really better or is this something we're generally saying to comfort kids?

Discussion not sure how to cope

Hi everyone, it would be great if anyone could give some insights of what helps. I am exhausted from trying ways to solve this.

For context, I am currently on medication and while it does help a lot of things, its certainly not everything.

Lately I feel like im stuck in doing nothing for a long time. getting out of bed takes me 3 hours. making a meal 2 hours. getting ready to leave the house another 2 hours. im living in slow motion it stresses me out but doesnt help to make me faster either.

it gets weirder. i go on long walks 10k steps. its nowhere near grounding it usually just feels like if i walk long enough i dont feel my body moving its just more of me mentally walking so the long walks dont make me tired or anything bcs i was so tapped out.

i think rn its a bit concerning. food feels like a chore i remind myself i have to do bcs it keeps me alive. lately i really have no appetite and if im running late i just dont eat. i think i lost 5kg in like 2 weeks

so at this point i dont know anymore. im not breaking down crashing out or anything its just off.

Question Dissociation

Hello, how do you interrupt dissociative episodes and prevent yourself from slipping back into a dissociative state?

Currently I am experiencing dissociative episodes following a trigger which sparked a fight with my partner.

It has been over 24hours now and I am still struggling with the recovery in the form of dissociation.

The biggest symptoms I am experiencing are massive brain fog (my thoughts sound like slurred speech) fatigue (stuck in bed) and rumination (I can't move on from what my partner and I were fighting about and how we were fighting)

It is impacting me harshly because I have very important things to do and can't make myself focus on them because of how horrible I feel still.

What resources do you use when experiencing dissociative episodes and how do you get yourself to not only snap out of it but stay snapped out of it?

Vent [trigger warning] I could use some encouraging words; procrastination and difficulties being active

I’ve been procrastinating and it’s making me feel bad. I’ve stopped showing up and working for more than a month. I need to pick it up again but I’m feeling so bad, I don’t know to how. Any support is welcome or people who’ve been through the same.

Also because it goes this bad, I’ve been slacking on sleep and if I do sleep, I have a hard time getting out of bed.I don’t know what to do, it just feels lonely and I just feel like crying all the time.

Discussion Dissociation due to blocked motivations

I experience a kind of dissociation when motivations, which could be seen as parts of me, are blocked.

I've repeatedly seen how expressing a blocked motivation or doing something I close to wholeheartedly agree with reduces dissociation, making perception more vivid, making me feel more like a person, and identify more with my body.

It is harder to see increases in dissociation, but I've seen in the past how allowing my mother to abuse me emotionally and doing nothing to try to stop that increased dissociation.

I have a lot of evidence for this in my life, but I've very rarely encountered others who knew about these phenomena. I'm wondering if some people here have experienced something similar.

Vent [trigger warning] Trauma-related chronic muscle guarding/armouring or functional freeze — does anyone else experience this?

Hi everyone

I’m 25F, and I’ve been dealing with a chronic pain cycle for around 5 years, with almost two years of remission in between the years 2022-2024.

I’m posting because I feel incredibly alone in this experience and would really love to hear from people who have experienced something similar.

My pain started after medical trauma and emotional abuse at the age of 20. I have two possible theories about what might be happening, although I know I can’t say for certain what the underlying mechanism is.

My first theory is chronic protective muscle guarding or “armouring.” I wonder whether my body learned to remain physically tense as a protective response to trauma, and whether this pattern continues even when I’m no longer in danger.

My second theory is a functional freeze response, possibly involving dorsal vagal shutdown, alongside persistent peripheral muscle guarding and peripheral sensitisation. I wonder whether feeling trapped, emotionally overwhelmed or unsafe contributes to a shutdown/freeze state, with my body physically clenching and maintaining a cycle of pain. I’m not sure whether these concepts fully explain my symptoms, but they seem worth exploring given how strongly my pain responds to my emotional state and environment.

My pain patterns:

- The pain is concentrated in my upper body: shoulder blades, upper/mid-back, spine, inner elbows and forearms.

- It switches sides — sometimes right-sided, sometimes left-sided, and occasionally bilateral.

- When both elbows/arms hurt, my back sometimes feels better, almost as if the pain shifts between areas.

- During bad flares, I sometimes experience unusual sensations in my left ring finger and palm, such as warmth, burning or a strange foreign feeling.

- Flares often follow emotional stress, panic, emotional abuse or feeling trapped. Sometimes, though, the pain returns for seemingly no reason.

One of the strangest things is how strongly my pain responds to my environment and emotional state.

- Exercise: During exercise, I feel no pain, and I can experience relief afterward too.

- Dancing in clubs: Dancing and being immersed in music can make my pain almost disappear.

- Social connection: Spending time with people, travelling, staying in hostels and feeling free can eliminate my pain by around 90% - 100%

- Remissions: I previously had almost two years without pain when I stopped obsessing over a particular phobia and stopped with Dr google. This year, I’ve also had several remissions lasting few weeks but unfortunately, the pain keeps returning.

- Lorazepam (Ativan): During severe flares, lorazepam 3 mg has eliminated my pain. I realise this doesn’t prove the cause, but I find the response interesting.

Massage provides temporary relief, but the pain returns relatively quickly. I’ve also tried more than 50 acupuncture sessions with almost no lasting improvement.

I’ve had quantitative sensory testing (QST), which was completely normal, with no allodynia or hyperalgesia.

Because of these patterns, I wonder whether my pain involves persistent peripheral muscle guarding, peripheral sensitisation, a trauma-related freeze response, or some combination of factors. I’m particularly curious about the relationship between physical tension, the autonomic nervous system and the way pain changes when I feel safe and connected to others.

I know that terms like dorsal vagal shutdown and functional freeze are used in different ways, and I’m not claiming that either has been medically established as the cause of my pain. I’m trying to find people who recognise this particular pattern and might have found ways to improve it or completely eliminate their chronic pain.

I’d especially love to hear from anyone who experiences:

- Chronic pain concentrated in the upper body rather than widespread throughout the body.

- Pain that switches sides or moves between the arms and back.

- Pain that almost disappears during exercise, dancing, socialising or when feeling safe.

- Flares following emotional stress, panic or interpersonal conflict.

- Long periods of remission followed by the pain returning.

- Temporary or significant relief from somatic movement, TRE or relaxation.

- A feeling that their body is physically bracing or clenching during periods of emotional shutdown or freeze.

Most importantly, has anyone found a way to make the relief last? Have you found approaches that helped reduce the constant guarding or break the cycle of pain returning whenever life becomes stressful?

I’m really struggling at the moment. The pain is exhausting, and I’m going through a lonely phase in my life and im currently been unemployed for months cos of the distress caused by tge pain. It’s especially difficult when I can feel almost completely normal in certain situations, only for the pain to return again as if I never had chronic pain.

I also have health anxiety, so I’d really appreciate responses focused on personal experiences and practical things that helped, rather than jumping to diagnoses so if terms like fibromyalgia and central sensitisation can be avoided that would help me alot not to be triggered as those diagnoses/mechanism have been ruled out. I’m trying to understand my experience without spiralling into more health anxiety.

If anyone has experienced something similar, I’d genuinely love to hear your story. Even knowing I’m not the only person going through this would mean a lot. ❤️

Thank you for reading.

Question Does anything work? Almost giving up

Y’all, I’m so tired. I’ve tried SO hard. And I mean it. I’m a go getter who will try, try, try, and try. And I’ve tried so hard to get better.

I’m only 20 and I’ve already tried 5 different therapists and 10 different medications over the past few years. At first, I thought that surely it’s because I’m doing CBT. Then I tried EMDR too and a bit of somatic and that didn’t work either. Does anything work?? Will anything ever work?

For context, I mostly struggle with hypo arousal, lack of motivation/interest/will, emptiness, isolating, daydreaming/scrolling, disconnect from life, etc. Did anything work for you? What should I try now?

Question Any guys over 30 start a WHOLE new life by themselves entirely after being in solitude a long time?

I mean like you have no one in your life. You move to a whole new country or something. Building up a new life, community, joy, a partner/family etc.

I'll keep this super short, of course will be missing some details but I grew up in a very dysfunctional "home". Addicts, abusers, things I probably shouldn't say as I'm not sure if the post will allow to go through. You get the point.

But it's all I ever knew as a kid growing up. Life was dysfunctional. It wasn't like anyone else of my friends I had. I would be around their houses all the time and it was so beautiful and different.

This shapes your teens/twenties. For me anyway. I stayed in the dysfunction for a long time and it represented who I was around or called friends too. I was a scapegoat. Used a lot. I was "weak" without knowing it. I put on a mask to try fit in.

Blah blah blah... It's in the past now...

I am now 33, I've moved continent and I've been in therapy for some years now. My life has changed tremendously in this time. Granted before this I was already on a good habit scale. Gym, clean eating, not on social media, vices etc.

But right now I'm at what feels like a pivotal moment almost like really starting a new life. I've gone no contact with my "family" bare in mind it's literally just 2 of them because of how dysfunctional it is everyone seems to distant themselves. So not like I have a big loving family anywhere. They're addicts just inside (I tried to help, rehab etc for many years and I need to look after myself right now)

I've spent a lot of time in solitude during these years which have been good but now I want to connect with people again, build community, can't help the negative thought appear like who would want to be friends with some guy whos by himself / doesn't have anyone around but that's where I'm at. I'm not lonely but feel like a "loner" almost.

I work for myself, online business which is in decent shape and I have a lot of joy from this. I also connect with many people online through my work on a personal level so it's not like I don't speak to any humans.

Anyone done something similar?

Discussion When you lose your immunity to pain

Have you ever had a time in your life when every single thing felt like it was hurting?

Like living in a body without skin—where even a gentle breeze or walking through dusty wind hurts because there’s nothing to protect you.

Have you ever felt like that emotionally? Like everything hurts, even when it normally shouldn’t?

Posting this in this sub because I didn't get answers on my original post and I’d really like to hear about other people’s experience. (with edits)

Recently I wondered whether I stay stuck in my tiny studio apartment where I am unhappy and where it’s challenging to really rest and regulate because it mimics my family home and a part of me doesn't think I deserve a peaceful home..

I grew up in a family where everyone had their explosions of emotions, outbursts, crying, screaming, at any given time without warning.. To this day I live on high alert and hyper vigilance and listen to everything around me and can’t help but to monitor every sound even though I wish I didn't.. I live in an apartment building where I hear EVERYTHING my neighbours do, especially the family upstairs who doesn't care that someone else lives under and walk and run like a pack of elephants.. I can’t fall asleep or wake up when I want to bc of that, I have been living with their rhythm of life for four years.

I mean I understand I am doing this to myself in a way, this is why I am confused. I think that even though it might be tough to find another apartment with the same space or bigger for about the same price, I’m thinking maybe it’s not impossible, and yet, nothing happens. So yes I do have ADHD, CPTSD, I am highly dysregulated due to grieving my uBPD mom and exhausted but… if I really wanted to leave, I could, I think, but I don’t.

Is it because a part of me doesn't believe I deserve peace? Or that I deserve to live in a quiet environnement where I don’t feel persecuted by every sound? Why do I keep myself trapped in a place that just keeps my system on alert?

Anybody can relate or share their experience of finding a home where they can rest their nervous system and heal from childhood chaos?

Question Sometimes I really feel like an alien

I really seem to be different from many of my peers. I don't seem to have the same interests or goals they have, like relationships, careers, partying, starting families. In the past I also didn't have any interest in friends, but this has changed and it turns out I'm actually very extroverted. The trauma just made it safer to not get close to anyone. So that makes me wonder if the other things that make me different are also trauma or if I was just born "wrong".

Also for some added context, my middle sister is almost the exact same as me, while my youngest sister isn't. But my youngest sister did have less involvement of our abusive father as my parents split pretty soon after she was born. But I still don't know if I was born like this or made like this.

Trigger warning Does anyone here have dead eyes?

Like you look in the mirror and there's no colour in your eyes... just black. I look like a serial killer. And idk the 'fix' to this. idk. I'm just tired of this. Tired of everything. Tired of the numbness, the isolation, being off-putting to people. I wish there was a button I could press to fix my brain. But apparently I need to do really slow 'somatic' work to gradually thaw, whatever that means. I'm just tired.

Trigger warning Tortured from a Very Young Age, My Complex PTSD Is Driving Me Crazy

Hello everyone. I'm sorry for my English; it isn't my native language.

I'm desperately looking for people who are willing to listen to me and answer my many questions.

I've suffered from traumatic amnesia since my earliest childhood, and I've lived with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for as long as I can remember. Over the years, throughout this absurd existence, my condition has evolved into severe complex PTSD (C-PTSD).

I no longer feel anything, so I perceive things with a certain emotional distance. The only emotions I can feel are fear and anger, and only in very specific situations. As for everything else, I pretend.

I don't even know anymore whether I'm suffering or not. I haven't cried in years, much to my despair, because I desperately need to.

But if there's one thing that truly shakes me to my core, it's what my brain sometimes screams at me. I don't know if this happens to any of you, too…

It orders me to do things—things that could put me in danger.

For example, to have sex in situations that reduce me to nothing more than an object, in front of a depraved audience made up of people several times my age. If I don't do it, something inside me screams that I'm not doing my job. It eats away at me and pushes me toward these degrading acts, even though they disgust me deeply.

There's also the irresistible urge to squeeze my wrists or ankles tightly.

I feel as though I can sense restraints, something gripping me tightly. And if I don't do it… My God, once again, it destroys me psychologically.

I have no specific memories of actually being restrained while I was being tortured, so I'm afraid I'm making all of this up and creating these experiences through autosuggestion. What do you think?

A few more questions:

Has anyone ever been diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) under circumstances similar to mine?

How can you tell whether autosuggestion is leading you to construct a false narrative?

What does the process of fully healing from traumatic memories look like?

Thank you, everyone.

Musings Making connections between feelings and actions seems like healing

Making connections between feelings and actions might be the only pattern that seems like healing. It moves me toward a state which seems less dissociated and more right.

I feel deceived by other ideas. Merely feeling feelings can be useless or worse, like recognizing a part of me and then rejecting it. The idea that some kind of purely internal work can help has led to spending time and effort on something that is useless and unpleasant.

Note that I said feelings and not emotions. Even recognizing that I'm hungry or tired and responding appropriately to that can be beneficial.

The hardest part can be finding a response which agrees with most of me. Internal conflict is probably the main factor which disconnected feelings from actions. Connecting feelings with actions in a way which creates more internal conflict probably wouldn't be helpful.

Vent [trigger warning] I feel abnormal

I have felt, like a sense of in a situation that I am abnormal. I am not abnormal, but I feel I am sometimes, just invisibly to others.

I have felt like that since I was a child.

Context:

In toddlerhood, I was playful, active and healthy.

Examples: I stomped going up and down the stairs, made funny faces, danced to songs etc. I was quite good academically and got As in Kindergarten.

In childhood, I was active and jumpy.

Examples: Talked nonsense, played with my little sister pretend a lot. Had quite a hard grip and force when I played with my sister and then she would cry and our parents would scold me that I am older, and my force is stronger in reality than my perception of it. I often felt angry and sad, and kind of started to isolate from my sister that I harm everyone in my way so I should just stay away. But, I never really was able to isolate myself, I had very low self-control. I used to sit right into people's personal spaces, touched their skin (face, arms, hands), annoyed them. My grades were good (before grade 3).

In early teenage, I was very cringe.

Examples: I used to just blurt out things like that whether or not they were appropriate for the social setting. I got irritated from normal things. Didn't eat vegetables, ate a lot of snacks. My grades were barely making it to Cs and Ds (grades 3.5 - 8)

Around age 15, I was still quite cringe and had shame for not being like my cousins.

Examples: One time, I had henna on my hands (we were making tattoos) and I washed them, but it still had some left and I placed my hands onto the sleeves of my cousin's favorite shirt and it got ruined. I felt pretty bad that I did that. Similarly, I had a lot of these impulsive things, and I just stopped.

I also started having voice problems, my posture was leaned forward, I had slow movements. I fidget a lot. I have BFRBs. I avoid demands a lot.

My therapist told me after a sensory profile:

I also have sensory sensitivity, low registration, low sensory seeking and slight high sensory avoidance.

With voice problems, I still have them. I don't know how to speak clear. I mumble or intertwine words that leave my mouth and the other person doesn't hear it clearly. I have to repeat so my times. I don't know if I am speaking loudly or low. I don't know if my speed is normal or slow. I talk very slow and don't open my mouth wide enough that words get lost inside my mouth before going out.

My posture is still leaned forward and I do not know how to walk normally. If I straighten my spine, I look unnatural like forcing myself to be straight.

My walking speed is slow, my movements are slow.

I fidget a lot since my tween age. Bouncing/shaking my legs, rocking my torso, swaying, wiggling my toes.

I peel my skin off my fingers and lips.

Onto the Title:

I feel abnormal.

An example I will give that happened just now when I felt like that:

I am at my aunt's house. There are my cousins here too. So, it was evening and we hadn't eaten in a while, so my aunt told my cousin if she could make her black tea. My uncle also told her how much he wants and my aunt said that I also like black tea so, my cousin should make mine as well. My cousin asked her mother (my aunt) how much I would want. My aunt said to my cousin to ask me directly because she doesn't know. (I was around them the whole time) Then my cousin asked me how strong I would like it, and I was going to answer her, but I think I was slow to respond and I kept saying, like. Then my cousin said said to my aunt that I am just saying, like, like, like. I got embarrassed, but I managed to say, half, however, I wanted a full mug. And then I didn't say anything. That time I felt like I am not normal.

I don't know why my response time is so slow. I am just realizing this now that when someone asks me a question, I am thinking of an answer instead of answering. And just when I am about to answer, they repeat the question and it makes me feel self-conscious. And it's happened so many times.

Vent [trigger warning] Not having safety in childhood has broken me. What do you mean by "broken me" you say? I spent my entire childhood being fazed out. Imagine being high without being on drugs. Bad things happened to me and I couldn't be sad. Good things happened to me and I couldn't be happy.

I remember just blankly staring at the void. I did go insane. It still scares me that I was not worth saving.

Vent [trigger warning] When they act like they have to argue with u to snap u out of ur symptoms

My trauma mostly stems from this issue. People closest to me genuinely believe that I just love being problematic and that it doesn't cause me extreme suffering to excuse their own abusive behavior towards me. They can't possibly comprehend and fathom that when I'm not allowed outside whenever I want to be outside, it brings me back to my darkest memories and worst fears and it's not just a silly stupid naive whimsy. It hurts so bad that I'm essentially slowly dying because people can't comprehend that I need the right to go outside and that I've already done everything I can to escape my toxic family situation. I can't get out because I'm frozen by every bad memory where I have already tried to escape and faced horrific betrayal and pain and punishment. I hate when people doubt my extreme anger towards my abusers and try to say it's not that bad. U HAVEN'T LIVED MY LIFE OF COURSE IT DOESN'T FEEL THAT BAD TO YOU STOP PROJECTING YOUR DISAGREEING SELF ON ME. My anger is a self defensive survival mechanism but I've already been so angry and haven't escaped, I'm just frozen.

Vent [trigger warning] Nothing is mine. Or maybe, I am nothing.

Kind of an opposite to the usual kind of post found here.  I always feel I don’t belong.  But here goes while the window is open allowing me to say any of this.

Few things have ever been allowed to be mine.

My emotions don’t belong to me.  The things that I’m given are just as easily taken away again or given away.

Everything must be earned.  And I am unworthy of it all.  I fail in a million ways.

I was lectured so often about respect in my now failed 20 year marriage, but it was never given to me.  Dignity?  What is that?  Is that always keeping your emotions inside and never feeling them because they aren’t mine?  Is it always feeling so exposed and alone and just carrying it all in silence?

Is it the cruelty of a religious upbringing that won’t even let me cry out in pain?  What pain?  Someone else always has worse pain than mine.  I should be grateful for it all.  Always grateful.  Always respectful.  Always minimize myself for others.  It’s on me to care when others don’t.

It’s so programmed in me.  It’s not a should.  It’s how would I do anything else?

Today I am sorry that I am not better at everything. Or anything.  Always second rate or worse.  I apologize to the universe that I exist broken.

I can’t tell this to anyone.  How would I tell anyone?  I haven’t earned it.  I can never earn it.  It’s all too heavy anyway.  Mustn’t burden anyone else.  Must be grateful for even this burden.  Mustn’t cry out.  No one would come anyway.  So I’ll just sit here today.  At the bottom of this well of grief that I can’t feel anyway because it isn’t mine.  Nothing is mine.

And so it is.  A breakthrough I suppose that I can write any of this.

This is the me that I want to be.  But I don’t think this me is made for the world.  This is my freeze.  This is my fawn.  This is what I cannot intellectualize beyond.  I can’t conjure a will simply because I know there should be one.

And deep down, there’s the sneaking suspicion that I’m not real at all.

Discussion Do you have major control issues? Wanting to change how you feel all the time. NSFW

This is my biggest problem. I am obsessively wanting to control my internal states. I tend to have a few basic emotions: anger/rage, anxiety/stress/fear, bored, numb, still/quiet. These are the main states I have so far. When I am in any of these, I want to control them. Especially boredom/flatness, I fucking hate being bored. I want to control, control, control. Feel something else. I suppose it's a desire to gain mastery over my external/internal environment somewhat.

Any help w this?
