Photo/Video Hole Punch Clouds formation over Key West, Florida

"A fallstreak hole – also known as a cavum, hole punch cloud, punch hole cloud, skypunch, cloud canal, or cloud hole – is a large gap, usually circular or elliptical, that can appear in cirrocumulus or altocumulus clouds. The holes are caused by supercooled water in the clouds suddenly evaporating or freezing, and may be triggered by passing aircraft. Such clouds are not unique to any one geographic area and have been photographed from many places."

Ah so it’s like the supercooled water bottle trick where you smack it and it instantly freezes

A way to see if punch hole clouds have airliners, look for the exoplanet.

Probably the best example of fallstreak holes I’ve ever seen

I've only ever seen oval, broken ones like the middle one. Didn't even know it was an actual thing!

If there's one thing that I have learned from YouTube, it's that if I'm ever witness to something amazing, and actually manage to get my phone out in time to record, I should hold all commentary until I hit stop.

Any weather experts know, Are these from cold spots sinking down or warm updrafts punching thru from below & water vapor condensing in them as it gets high & cold ? I'm guessing the latter

u/Natural-Philosophy15 27d ago
Not an expert, but it’s water vapor that turned into droplets or crystals and fell. I usually see this when planes fly through a layer of clouds, because I live near an airport. I don’t know how so many formed in this video (Exhaust particles can cause vapor to coalesce as droplets)

Absolutely breathtaking. These formations are so rare to see clearly, and you captured it perfectly over the Florida coast.

This is totally strange. Maybe it could have to do with waterspout formation, like some sort of really weak fair weather updraft starting.
Hoping someone with cloud knowledge eventually tells me if I'm right or wrong.

Whoa! That is both very cool, and very scary looking, at the same time. Thank you for sharing the video!

When they're over the state of Florida, I'm fairly certain they're actually referred to as "dimpled chads".

I always have to read the comments to find out what it really is. It’s always something I’ve never heard considering my whole youth watching Discovery Channel or Nat Geo and other science/nature channels.

When he says "Bro, look at these clouds," and, "What is going on with these clouds?" I can't help but hear a little touch of Christopher Walken which, frankly, makes the whole thing seem a bit more surreal.

Can someone explain to me what causes this or is this even genuine?
Never seen or heard of this before

Very cool! I wonder if long ago someone thought similar clouds were space crafts.

Clearly you didn’t bother to read the comments before posting, there are plenty of people today that think that.

u/pain_is_bread 27d ago
Anyone else hear the last “Look at these clouds“ in Christopher Walken’s voice?
