I would rather lose the game this week then Rush Williams back and he gets hurt again

11

u/iBears 11h ago

I really think he was ready for the Packer game but they didn't rush him back. I wouldn't think we're risking him unless he's absolutely ready to come back. If he gets hurt again and is out a few more weeks the season is cooked. We were 0-2 last year so quite frankly being 3-2 is not the end of the world. With our schedule I would've taken 3-2 if you told me preseason we were at this point even without Caleb getting hurt.

Players are seen as assets, and at every position, that means playing them when they are conceivably "able to play". In today's NFL, long-term health is nowhere near as much of a priority as winning now.

The QB position is no different. We don't have the luxury of a top-level, borderline starting caliber backup, so if Caleb can go, he will go, even if the safest decision would be to continue to sit and rehab until he is closer to 100%.

Off-season is where the most rehab happens, so unless there is a threat of catastrophic failure, any player at any position will be in the starting lineup if they can go.

Ben knows a good story arc

10

u/bellichecked 11h ago

I've seen this take a few times and it's honestly one of the smartest I've seen on this sub. I'm fine if he starts.. but they really need to be careful. No unnecessary hits, get the ball out, this is our franchise. We're not winning the Super Bowl this year lol.

How do you know he is being rushed back?

How do you know he is being rushed back?

u/Lemonn_time 6h ago

I don’t. You’ll know on Sunday when he is playing if he is conservative with his scrambling

u/ethanlan 21-3 6h ago

I always forget he wore 45 his first threepeat

1

u/Kandidar 4h ago

He didn't wear 45 for any season they won a title

61

u/BroAbernathy 14h ago

Forgot what elite arm talent looked like and watched some highlights and just laughed at how silly it is.

11

u/Sip_py Superfans 14h ago

I think I had the opposite feeling. I'm now so used to it when I watched Bagent I was like...what is this noodle arm doing, but he probably still throws it hard. Just relatively

4

u/savedbythemars Staley 13h ago

The defense can count to 3 and still make a play on his throws. Just seems to float like someone lowered the gravity slider

2

u/Sip_py Superfans 12h ago

At first I thought he was trying to have some finesse but I just don't understand it

3

u/TheManWhoWasNotShort An Actual Bear 12h ago

Nah, Bagent makes guys like Hanie look like they can sling it. One of the weakest arms I can ever remember seeing

1

u/ModularEthos 5h ago

I mean even as a 3rd string he’s NFL talent which makes him one of the top 100 QBs on the planet.

5

u/JayGatsby1881 14h ago

Even if he can't walk out there, he is better than Bagent and Keenum lol.

7

u/CrispierCupid 21-3 14h ago

He could be sitting in a chair and deliver more

1

u/FlameChucks76 Bears 12h ago

Put him on a mobile scooter.....deadly.

2

u/TheManWhoWasNotShort An Actual Bear 12h ago

At least Bagent. Keenum did about as good as you can expect from an old man with a cooked spaghetti noodle for an arm

7

u/Pulpdog94 14h ago

This man can paint his head shoulder knees and toes for all I care. Fuck the haters iceman is back.

27

u/HermanShemsley Deep Dish 15h ago

This definitely doesn’t guarantee he’ll play, but I’m hopeful. I never want to see Bagent under center ever again. Not even for a kneel down

13

u/Thatpcguyy683 14h ago

Done with him and his dad fr

11

u/HermanShemsley Deep Dish 14h ago

The amount of water being carried for that dude by the media and organization alike has actually been embarrassing.

I never really saw fans saying he should start over Caleb, at least not seriously anyway. But the gaslighting by the media and the Bears to suggest this dude was a starter in the NFL was next level insanity.

6

u/Paranoid_Android22 Ben’s Johnson 14h ago

On the bright side…now that’s all shut down. He has Ben Johnson calling plays..he has an elite offensive line. Hes been here long enough to know the playbook fully. He just sucks. If he does have to play again, I’ll root for him to do well because it benefits the bears. I just don’t see it ever happening. The talks of him “starting for half the teams in the league” are looooong gone

2

u/HermanShemsley Deep Dish 13h ago

Well. If we’re being fair, Ben was part of the gassing of Bagent.

This past offseason Ben said Tyson was “one of the 32 best.” That’s after (during?) his second off season with Tyson, where presumably he’s taught him some things. So, either he wasn’t being truthful in hopes of obtaining a draft pick for Bagent. Or, he really thought this guy was a starter in the league. Which, if that’s the case, I have to call into question Ben’s talent evaluation, at least in this instance.

7

u/Paranoid_Android22 Ben’s Johnson 13h ago

Did you want him to say his backup QB sucks? People take way too much from coach speak. He also has said Montez is a great pass rusher.

2

u/HermanShemsley Deep Dish 13h ago

Of course not. I expect(ed) him to not delve into hyperbole. We all understand there’s a “wink wink, nod nod” aspect to sports. GM’s, coaches, players, they all do it and that’s fine.

However, over the top praise for a backup quarterback isn’t necessary when run of the mill “coach speak” will suffice. The issue I have with it is the lack of foresight from Johnson. He’s likely not expecting Caleb to miss time, which is fine because Caleb had been healthy, so you’re not expecting Tyson to ever see the field. But when you levy those expectations upon a guy, he’d better deliver. And everyone here knew Tyson sucked.

2

u/Paranoid_Android22 Ben’s Johnson 12h ago

We are talking about a QB 2 here. Idk what anyone was expecting.

1

u/savedbythemars Staley 13h ago

How quickly this sub has turned. Went from he's probably a starter in this league to cant even sniff any back up roles.

Cant believe how well Johnson and this organization did of hiding him and his deficiencies.

It reminded me of watching Trubisky play where he just looked lost sometimes and couldn't dissect a zone defense

1

u/bellichecked 11h ago

This. Go back to the comments on him during pre-season 🤣

I actually think he's regressed as a QB. I'm not blaming BJ, but he seems less decisive and less accurate which I thought were his two best qualities. So weird.

Return of the king

8

u/ArchibaldNemisis Bears 14h ago

I think they are bringing Caleb back this Sunday. I don't think it's must win but it would put us in a serious hole. The vikings will be going through a tough stretch of their scheduled after their bye to see who they are. The Packers have the Lions, Panthers, Patriots, and Rams on 4 of their next 6 games. We are 3-2 now, if we drop our next 3, we are 3-5 playing the Bucs and the Saints. We can hit the Lions going .500 and still have a chance at a wild card.

1

u/reverend_al 5h ago

I disagree, if we want a post season this Sunday is a must win. We have a tough schedule and play in the toughest division we can't drop games to teams like Atlanta

1

u/ArchibaldNemisis Bears 5h ago

Well, there's 3 wild card spots. We can figure two of them are going to the NFC West. Right now we are competing within our division. I don't see the other wild card spot going to the South or East. Both those divisions look bad. Maybe at best we are competing with one of the South teams. Both Falcons and Panthers look capable. Panthers moreso than Falcons. But you can throw one of those teams. That leaves the North. Vikings schedule gets really tough after the bye. Packers have a stretch of Patriots, Panthers, Rams, Bills, and Texans. Those are tough games. We have Patriots, Seahawks, Bills and Jaguars. Those are the toughest games for us outside our division. I still see the lions winning the division. Their schedule is just too easy. I agree that every game counts but this one right now isn't must win.

15

u/Further_Beyond Hester's Super Return 15h ago

Falcons have a solid defense. Need him back.

Our secondary matches up MUCH better against the falcons weapons as well. Not pure speed like GB.

Let’s hope for another convincing win to get back on track

4

u/ShortFee2578 The Bears have the #1 offense...what do I do with my hands? 14h ago

The secondary may match up better, but I'm extremely concerned about the Bears ability to stop Bijan.

6

u/Further_Beyond Hester's Super Return 14h ago

No one stops Bijan. Focus on shutting down penix.

Make Penix uncomfortable and you can create turnovers and punts (see BAL game).

1

u/JTribs17 This Is The Score, But We Have Each Other 12h ago

Penix crumbles under pressure and i think part of the reason is simply injury concerns, but the issue with this bears team is that we can’t generate consistent pressure.

2

u/bellichecked 11h ago

That and if Bijan is averaging 6-7 ypc he won't ever be under any pressure. This maybe one of those DA blitz games.

2

u/dilapidated_wookiee Snoo Ditka 13h ago

This team is built to stop Bijan by having an offense that can move the ball, score points, and control possession.

We are not going to win games consistently unless we are scoring 27+.

1

u/bellichecked 11h ago

I'd be concerned against Bijan if you were any team but the Seahawks or maybe Houston. That dude cuts like Devin Hester as a RB. His lateral quickness is absurd.

7

u/OGPHUCKY 15h ago

7

u/Shivs_baby 14h ago

Today’s practice is a walkthrough so it’s not a heavy load. Let’s not get excited until we see the practice report for tomorrow and Friday.

7

u/cahayes2 15h ago

Fuck yeah. Booked a trip to Atlanta before the injury and was getting nervous he wouldn’t be available.

2

u/bellichecked 11h ago

Godspeed.

Didn't they change practice to no media and just a walk through?

Good sign regardless. We all got good feelings seeing that pre game warmup at Lambeau.

Just don't get re-injured

6

u/the_onewhoknocks 18 14h ago

Yes, but while it is a walkthrough they still list players as DNP, Limited, or Full even though they are just estimations. If a player is going to be DNP on a Thursday practice, they would not list them as Full on Wednesday's walkthrough.

There is a chance, obviously, that he is just Limited tomorrow, but I would guess that he'll be Full tomorrow as well.

EDIT: assuming this Underdog tweet can be fully trusted.

u/phishin3321 14h ago

Thank you Jesus

10

u/Trumpisanorangebitch 15h ago

I wonder if they will slow roll Caleb like Trapilo.

I hope not, but we will see.

25

u/jstutz_IV 15h ago

Massive difference. Trapilo didn’t have a training camp and is getting back into football shape after rehabbing a major injury.

20

u/GoldGlove2720 97 14h ago

Trapilo is completely different. He didn’t have a training camp. If Caleb is cleared he will play.

5

u/planefan001 14h ago

Trapillo also suffered an injury that ends many careers

6

u/Jack_Aubrey1981 14h ago

We’re not in must win territory with this game but it’s getting close, considering our next two opponents are NE and SEA. If we go 0-3 in that stretch, we’re cooked. For that reason I bet he plays this week.

6

u/Hiddencamper 14h ago

Unless the Vikings go on a losing streak we basically are must win now.

3

u/-PelagicMagic 14h ago

Yeah, we are 3 games behind them. We are not in a good spot.

1

u/GuaranteeBulky5610 14h ago

Two games with an asterisk that we'd need to beat them to even the series 1-1.

2

u/LoveMeSexyJesus Charles Tillman 14h ago

I remember when people said we were out of the playoffs last year when we started 0-2

3

u/Hiddencamper 14h ago

I don’t think we are out. If the Vikings stay hot it will force us to compete for the wild card. I don’t see the other teams in NFC north taking the Vikings down.

Losing to them sucked hard, and Caleb getting injured on a TD drive is making this harder than it should have been.

3

u/ChelskiS 14h ago

Ehh I think the Lions beat the Vikings as long as that defense isnt historically bad when they play

1

u/Hiddencamper 14h ago

I would love to see the lions go 2-0 on the Vikings this year : )

3

u/throwawaaayyyyyay 13h ago

I’d say I’d rather be 0-2 than 2-4 though

2

u/LoveMeSexyJesus Charles Tillman 12h ago

Then you’re in luck because we’ve already won 3 games

2

u/BoomNasty 54 14h ago

One could argue this is a must win given the difficulty of our upcoming schedule

0

u/dilapidated_wookiee Snoo Ditka 13h ago

I would only buy that if Tua is starting. You simply cannot lose to a Tua start, regardless who is playing qb for us

2

u/_segasonic Ditka 12h ago

Whatever QB starts doesn’t make a difference in all honesty.

Losing to Penix or losing Tua literally makes no difference to our chances down the line…

1

u/ObjectiveTie1232 12h ago

Tua’s bad, but our defense is missing half of our starters, and our starters didn’t even look that good. Without Caleb, I’m pretty worried about this one, Tua or not

-6

u/chaos_theory4248 14h ago

I’d rather Caleb gets slow rolled than end up like RG3

2

u/CenturyLinkIsCheeks 15h ago

caleb and bedard back this week.

resurrection week.

2

u/Meatballgravytrain 15h ago

So he’ll practice this week with the goal of starting and they’ll decide based on how he’s feeling after putting in full workloads.

Cool.

2

u/splintersmaster 14h ago

Given the state of the bears defense and the terrible stats from Atlantas passing defense this game on Sunday might need another 60 burger to get the W.

Both offenses are capable of it.

1

u/jkman61494 14h ago

I know we are going to be nervous whenever he comes back, but I really hate this matchup

To their credit, Atlanta’s defensive line has been really good this year and I’m not in love with the first game coming back of Caleb running around improvising on turf

Put Case Keenum in at the start if Caleb Williams is not ready, Keenum will win bears games.

u/whyregretsadness 12h ago

i hope you're wrong too 😅

-4

u/Small-Area2346 15h ago

I still think it’s possible he practices full all week and still misses this week because of the short rest next week, but great news either way.

6

u/j11430 Sweetness 14h ago

If he's good to play this week the short week should not be considered.

If the short week needs to be considered then he shouldn't be cleared for this week

1

u/ShortFee2578 The Bears have the #1 offense...what do I do with my hands? 14h ago

I'm not sure about that, because if I understand the way NFL practice-status works (which I may not), Caleb has to practice with the 1s in order to be considered a "full participant" (since he's the normal starter). That's what the Ravens got in trouble for last year when they tried to list Lamar as "full", even though he was practicing with like the 2nd or 3rd string all week. The NFL told them "you can't do that."

I don't think you want to have Caleb get the 1st string reps all week if you think it's likely that Bagent or Keenum will be starting.

1

u/Small-Area2346 14h ago

Wasn’t Kyler Gordon full last week? I doubt he was getting all the 1st team work. Maybe it’s just a qb rule but I don’t think that’s how it works.

1

u/kaleseyer Bear Logo 15h ago

i dont know why you are being down-voted. Yes, while it would be good to have him back for the falcons, resting him one more week, then he gets a Thursday night game then 11 days until the next game makes a lot of sense. As much as I would like him back earlier, the safer move would be to wait. Rather than having him play 2 games in 4 days and injure himself.

-1

u/Small-Area2346 14h ago

There are only a few of us left here with functioning brains, it appears. Rough week for this sub.

0

u/OpneFall 12h ago

Agreed, going back a bit it feels like it could be a bit of a game like Rex / Orton, or Jim McMahon vs the Vikings. Keep him on the sideline, see how the game goes, put him in if needed, if not, great, full speed ahead Thursday

0

u/geoffpz1 15h ago

If there is anything pointing to him not being 100% I would sit him. We won 2, more would be a bonus, but I would rather have a 100% healthy caleb than a win against a non conference team. Playing him on Thursday is hot the end of the world. .

3

u/ShortFee2578 The Bears have the #1 offense...what do I do with my hands? 14h ago

The Falcons are not a non-conference opponent.

-1

u/geoffpz1 14h ago

OK, fine, a non divisional opponent. Better??

3

u/Paranoid_Android22 Ben’s Johnson 14h ago

Correct but they could’ve also listed him as limited. You don’t normally see full to limited unless there is a setback…even if it is a Wednesday practice to a Thursday practice
