Pretty sure I just ruined a shuttle driver's day....

Taking the family on a Disney cruise this week. Once in a lifetime deal, hope it's amazing. We just got on a bus to go from Orlando to the port. Bus driver asks where we're from...
"Oh the Atlanta area" I reply.
"Oh yeah? Must be braves fans then."
""Yeah man we try to be..."
"Gotcha, yeah. Well you might have to find a different bus you know, this is Mets territory"
"Ah... gotcha. Does that mean I'm about to get on a really expensive bus that'll break down half way there?"
"....." ----> Furious silence

UPDATE: As we crossed I-95 the driver announced over the intercom that the road stretches all the way to Canada, and part of the road runs through New York, home of the championship winning New York Knicks. šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚. I'm sitting way in the back so I'm just gonna leave well enough alone.

SECOND UPDATE:
On the intercom: "If you'll look out your left you'll see the Kennedy Space Center. That's where rockets are launched into space. Can anyone think of someone that should be strapped to one of those rockets?" .... Do I have a nemesis? Is this how you get a nemesis???

Mets territory? Florida? Really?

Florida is just half of New York in a trench coat

u/ScruffyBlackDog 2d ago

Actually they left the trench coat in New York. Florida is New York in sunglasses and flip flops.

Was the trench coat belt-less likeā€œThe Executive?ā€

it's all the New Yorkers who got out of that shit hole

As a Floridian, New York isn’t really sending its best

Florida is pretty much Yankees and Red Sox territory in my experience. There’s a small cohort of Rays fans in Tampa, and pretty much everyone north of I4 is a Braves fan.

I grew up in Tampa and have always been a Braves fan (although technically I did live north of I4 so I guess that explains it).

Lots of northerners moving to Florida and obviously bringing their loyalties with them. However, I also think it didn’t help that the Yankees did spring training there.

I actually met George Steinbrenner there once when I was in Boy Scouts. I didn’t know who he was at the time lol.

It’s not just that but there’s massive Yankees signs everywhere. The big stadium in downtown Tampa and the training complex near the Bucs stadium.

I personally love st Pete but in terms of getting folks in the seats being on the Tampa side of the bay will be huge for them.

It’s why the lightning don’t have many issues filling up their building.

I sat next to him during batting practice and talked briefly to him. Another time my husband sat in the seats behind him during batting practice and asked for an autograph. Lol his handler said something to the effect it’d be easier to get George’s autograph than the players. I complemented him on his sunglasses (they had yankee logo on them) and he almost gave them to me but thought better since it was sunny. I think the braves played the Yankees on one of these games before they moved to orlando.

I technically grew up south of I4, but Polk County might as well be Alabama.

Definitely there are people who became fans of teams because of spring training locations. I knew plenty of kids who were Red Sox fans because they did spring training in Winter Haven.

That is spot on

Yes, really. Blame the snowbirds. Went to Mets-Rays and there were far more Mets fans than Rays anecdotally. Keep in mind, Mets were already eliminated and Rays had a lot to play for

Mets Single-A team is in Florida

3

u/YagiSlagi 2d ago

A third of the league has a single A team in Florida. Plus the Disney ports are in Canaveral and Lauderdale adding to the stupidity of the meats fan comment.

Not a Mets fan but I’m definitely a meats fan.

Florida is the only state in the union where it gets more northern the further south you go

I mean my younger cousin that I grew up with, born and raised an Atlantan, is a Georgia fan and then all three of his pro teams are New York teams, so it's not unbelievable.Ā

He's probably not one of the only ones who grew up in Georgia and didn't grow up as a fan of the pro teams that are close to him geographically.

His birth dad used to be from NYC though.

I can tell you as someone who lives in Florida it is 100% not Mets territory. If anything the Yankees could make a claim but def not the Mets.

u/jonjon737 2d ago

I can remember Florida being Braves territory back before the Devil Rays and Marlins were around.

Yep I was as well as a kid, and there is a good reason for it that I didnt realize as a kid. TBS was a cable channel that was on even basic cable packages, and they played a lot of Braves games. My first hat was a Braves hat.

90% of people in florida arent from there. Theres fans of everything through the whole state.

1

u/BigInSheboyganGus 2d ago

They’re all New Yorkers. Some of them have to be Mets fans.

1

u/cgart96 2d ago

Pretty sure he was just referring to the bus he was driving. Not the whole area.

u/ItsMeJRemy 2d ago

I’m from Florida, living in Georgia for a while now but I’ve been a life long Braves fan! I’d never cheer for the Mets!

u/Otisthegreat14 2d ago

What’s funny is that Florida (outside of Miami and Tampa) is 100% Braves country as someone who lives here lmao

23

u/Yeetball86 2d ago

Miami actually has a lot of Braves fans from the Latino populations since the Braves were the only team they could watch for the longest time.

u/MontagOfTheFlies 2d ago

Makes sense, Atlanta’s a relatively good evacuation zone during hurricane season

-1

u/TellTaleReaper 2d ago

Im near orlandon and I never see braves hats until I head toward Atlanta

2

u/BravesCPA 2d ago

My brother in Christ, I’ve lived within two hours of Orlando my whole life and alternate between Braves and Bolts hats year round.

1

u/TellTaleReaper 2d ago

Same. Maybe it's cuz I'm on the side closer to tampa idk. Still don't see any and don't get comments on mine. It's all college football here, I don't even see other baseball teams, really.

u/BravesCPA 2d ago

Now that I agree with. Florida is definitely CFB focused. Lots of gators stuff

That silence is the sound of a man doing math on what his team spent this year

Bet he found some traffic to sit in just to make it awkward

You didn't ruin his day, he's the one that chose to be a Mets fan.

Just remember what METS stands for... My Entire Team Sucks

9

u/thedynamicuno83 2d ago

Breaking down half way is generous. That bus is going to struggle getting out of the parking lot.
(And as someone who lives in central Florida this area is 100% not ā€œMets territoryā€. We don’t really have a team considering a lot of us are transplants from other areas. You’ll find a good mix of teams.)

Hope you have fun in the cruise! Which boat are you going on? We went on Fantasy out of Cape Canaveral a couple years ago and just got back from Destiny out of Fort Lauderdale last week.

Basically, take all the little things they do well at the parks and apply that to anything you can think of on a cruise ship. It’s a blast.

I've started telling Mets and Phillies fans to keep their elbows up, when chopping their tomahawks.
