I didn't want a dog.

I'd not grown up with dogs and I'd been bitten by a few when I was younger. So I didn't really trust them. Then I got married. She had dogs growing up and she wanted a dog in our family. I said no, she said yes, and as you know, marriage is about compromise, so we got a dog.

I read every book that I could find about dog behavior and training. If we were going to bring a dog into our family it was going to be done so that it was trained and well behaved. I didn't want a dog that jumped, barked incessantly, peed in the house, or all the other annoyances that I saw elsewhere. After several months of research on training, we found that our neighbor's dog was going to have puppies. I was familiar with the mother and understood her temperament for the most part. I liked the idea of knowing from where our dog came.

We were fortunate to be there in July of 2006 to see the puppies soon after they were born. As the weeks went by we saw them grow and we were able to spend time with each of them. When the pups were about five weeks old we had settled on which one we wanted.

Her litter name was Boondock. She was named so by the breeder, because her mother, Bambi, presumably having finished giving birth, went outside to pee and out popped another puppy. She was born away from the whelping box – in the boondocks.

In September we took ownership of our new boxer puppy. Then off we went to puppy kindergarten to socialize her. We went to obedience training in order to teach her (and us) the intricacies of training. We tested for and received a canine good citizenship certification. We tested and achieved certification from Therapy Dogs International. We worked with our friends and their dogs to help train her. She learned quickly and had a temperament that was goofy but eager to please. She knew how to behave appropriately in differing situations. Exactly what I wanted when I agreed to getting a dog.

She quickly loved our friends, who trusted her so much with their newborn baby boy. She loved when we would visit my office because a colleague would play wrestle with her. She would run to his office if she could manage to break free from mine. Another old friend had her unconditional admiration and love. If we went without her to their home we would get interrogated by her nose upon return. She knew we were with him. The look of confusion and displaced excitement was always hilarious to witness.

She learned to push a button to let us know when she needed to go outside. She learned to walk on a treadmill so that she could have a comfortable walk in the cold winters. She learned to balance on walls and curbs when we went on walks. She jumped over bike racks at the library. We walked through hardware stores and she greeted everyone that we met.

Our old crotchety cat was prone to clawing her face while she slept. She never fought back; she only kept a safe distance to ensure that she wasn't bothering him. She desperately wanted to play with him, but that was never to be. She was so patient.

We tested to become volunteers at Children's Hospital for their pet friends program. She was now a working dog. When I would put on my volunteer smock she would become incredibly excited to go visit the children. Her realization that we were going was always a very specific kind of excitement. Her body language would change immediately upon entering the hospital though. She would march diligently on the hard tiled floor of the hospital from room to room.

I watched her bring smiles to the children waiting in the epilepsy ward with wires attached to their heads. I watched her gently crawl up on the bed and lie down next to a little girl that had her first chemotherapy treatment. The girl's tiny body summoned the strength to put her hand on a new friend's head. I watched a girl that I had seen in the ICU for months, whom I thought was braindead, spring to life and laugh happily when her parents placed her hand on the visiting dog's head. I had to leave the room to compose myself. I remember thinking that anyone who doubts the power of animals for mental health and comfort should see this scene.

She was our comfort and therapy when we lost a loved one unexpectedly.

She again comforted us during the hard path that we took in our attempts to create a larger family.

Most importantly, she watched over us while we had our first child. Her role surely diminished in the family hierarchy, but her companionship never wavered. She loved the new addition to our family and enjoyed the time that we spent at home in those early days. So many new smells come with a baby! She stood by us as we learned to change diapers, eat at the table, play on the floor, and crawl in the backyard. She found her voice during this time. She never really barked before, but now when someone would come to the door she was quick to alert us.

Then years passed and another child came. But by now she had grown older and her body tired more quickly. With our youngest desperately wanting to play with her, she didn't have the energy to do so most of the time. I remarked many times how sad it will be that our youngest won't remember her.

This dog never judged me. Her exuberance with all people and animals was never surpassed by any human that I've ever known. She never stopped loving. She is the type of friend that I hope everyone can have in their life.

I hope that in those last moments that she had memories of running in green fields and splashing in streams with her sister and mother. Memories of the time that she gave us and the intense love that we have for her. I hope she forgot the self-inflicted injuries, the countless cancer surgeries, dental surgeries, and irritable bowel syndrome. I know that she felt it, but she never showed us her pain.

Except in the end.

Because of that, it is with joy for her life but sadness with her death, that I can say that she runs free now.

Friday, May 29, 2020 at 6:24PM, she leapt into the great unknown. She was sent along with all the love we could possibly pour out for her. She is no longer encumbered by the pain that she has hidden and endured in her life. She left us having given all the love that she could possibly have given, leaving it with all of us to remember her.

Leela ❤ Aged 13 years, 10 months, and 20 days. 2006-2020.

TL;DR - Leela, the dog in the sidebar, has died. This post is a tribute to her.

What to feed a five month boxer?

Post image

Hi- I have a five month old male boxer. He seems to have quite a delicate stomach. His first food after the breeder who was giving him I believe purina. I transitioned him to to royal canin on the vet advice (of course , they got commission apparently) I was then told that royal canin was terrible quality and was suggested acana but never got going in that because apparently legumes are terrible for boxers. Did a bit of research and slowly transitioned him to wild pet food raw alternative 80 20 beef. I did a VERY gradual transition but his stomach has been upset I would say 75% of the time. He also has terrible terrible room clearing death defying flatulence. Please can some one advise a good food that won’t make him constantly have diahrea and this excessively offensive gas. I don’t mind paying more money but it needs to be food that can travel- not raw as they will not fit our lifestyle. Ideally something I can buy at pet food stores as ordering can be really stressful. He also seems to have a chicken allergy, and to top it off he has never been a great eater.

Please help!

So far, we are at 12 visits and 4 surgeries this year.
Only a small one today to check his nose and throat because he was reverse sneezing, and since he was under anyway, they also removed some warts.

If I didn’t know better, I’d say he’s trying to figure out if I meant it when I said I would sell my family for him.

And yes, I would do anything for him. I just wanted to share the meme I made😬

Update on yesterday’s post !

Today we did all additional tests and ultrasound and Ares has only urinary infection, no stone no cancer!!! 🥳

All will be resolved with one round of antibiotics, but besides this he’s the healthiest boy ever! We will do another round of tests a week after we’ve finished the antibiotics, just to be safe, but business as usual!

Happiest family today!!! Thank you all for support and prayers ❤️

To spay or not to spay…

Hello Boxer family!

I’m going back and forth on whether or not I should get our boxer fixed. The vet and the trainer had different opinions. I don’t really want to have her opened up is the problem. She’s perfectly healthy etc etc. I know never say never but I don’t feel she could ever get out of our yard and/or anything in (tall fences because of deer). I don’t take her to the dog park or anything like that. I do for walks but that’s about it. She already has buddy here in the house. Ha. What’s everyone’s thoughts on this when you made your decision? Thanks all!

Boxer puppy

To all ye seasoned boxer owners; I need advice. I have a puppy Boxador, who I got through a rescue without understanding the boxer breed (I had big dog and lab experience, but I was rescue shopping so I didn't do my due diligence when I fell in love with them).

They're mayhem. Biting, stealing, chasing, pulling at my clothes. It's been 6 weeks, and it feels like I get good periods and lots of bad ones. She's hilarious, and an unrivalled amount of cute - but I'm terrified she will get bigger still doing this as she's growing rapidly. We are at a fear free puppy school, and we're told not even to yell, but it's really hard when she's biting hard into my arm or something. We have lick mats, I feed her scattered and in puzzles, she's getting 2 walks and lots of play with another dog. She has 3 baskets full of toys.

Does anyone have any tips? Are they all like this when little? She's very cuddly and affectionate 😂😅

Bilateral TPLO experiences?

Hi all, it was recently recommended that our sweet 5 year old boxer (1/4 lab mix), Dio, undergo bilateral TPLO surgery.
It isn’t an emergency, but his quality of life has been impacted.
He has always had sensitive joints, and would be whiny after a day of hard playing/running, like the beach for 6 hours for example. But after an altercation with another dog, he was in pain for 2-3 weeks, is no longer able to jump in/out of the back of the car and is very nervous about being touched or pushed from behind.
Does anyone have experience with this procedure and the recovery process?? Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Allergy Help

Post image

Old Pic^

My 1.5yr old boxer was fine until she went into her first heat. She started getting really itchy after the heat and has since developed a case of ringworm and may potentially have allergies. We tried steroids and it help for a short time but she was still slightly itchy. I’ve been washing her for the past 4 weeks with the anti fungal shampoo but if that doesn’t work what’s usually the next plan of action. Also any recommendations for cheaper allergy medicines?

2 weeks ago I’ve noticed some blood dripping from his penis… Ares is almost 7yo healthy intact male, but now his leukocytes are high and he had blood dripping from his penis, but not in his urine. I’ve contacted the vet immediately and we ran the urine test, and it all points to urinary infection but my vet is worried it could be bladder stone or even prostate cancer.. He’s on antibiotics and pain killers and this week we’ll have an ultrasound. I’m just so worried and hoping it’s “just” something simpler than cancer, if anyone has any experience or advice-it’s welcome! 🥺😢

Tummy issues.

Hello all!

We have a five month old mix puppy (75% boxer) who is just a love. He’s the best.

BUT THE STOMACH ISSUES.

He has loose stools about every other day, sometimes even in his crate in the middle of the night. His appetite hasn’t changed, he seems totally fine behavior wise.

At first we thought he was somehow getting into something, we were moving and he kept trying to get at the cardboard boxes, and our kiddos are new to having a dog and weren’t always careful about leaving snacks around or dropping crumbs. However, we’ve really gotten a handle on making sure he doesn’t eat anything he shouldn’t.

Things we’ve tried:

  1. Pre and probiotics.
  2. Smaller/more frequent meals
  3. Switching his chicken based dog food to Purina Pro Choice Salmon/rice.
  4. Talking to his vet, which just recommended the dog food switch mentioned above.

I know boxers are prone to digestive issues but I’m trying to get a handle on it because while he doesn’t seem uncomfortable- I’m growing weary of cleaning up his kennel at 6 in the morning.

I’m searching for any ideas to try that I might be missing. This is our first family dog in general and I’m just wanting to do best by him.

Picture for tax.
