Questions for Bookmark Lovers
Hi.
I decided to include a bookmark in the November edition of my cat-themed snail mail club, The Royal Moggy.
After making them, I have so many questions. I saw this subreddit, and decided "why not ask the experts!"?
I've advertised the size as about 2.25x8.25 inches (including the laminate). I'm going to send that size, since that is what I advertised, but thinking about it, I'm wondering (for future reference) if that is too large?
I want the cat's head to be able to be visible above the book, when it's closed.
Do any of you have a preference on bookmark sizes/shapes?
Do you prefer your cards laminated?
Any particular shapes, styles or sizes you like?
And finally, I'd thought about putting several pieces of my cat art on bookmarks, and selling them on my site.
Do you like buying in bundles, to save on shipping, or do you prefer to buy one at a time?
Thank you so much for any thoughts/input. I really appreciate it! 😊😸

My first bookmark
Is there a better way to string the ribbon through? I feel like its going to rip, but i may just be being paranoid.
Either way, I like the idea of master shake from aqua teen in an old school shake glass. Not the best but it gave me alot of ideas for new things!

The world's best bookmark!
Okay, now that I've got your attention...
I often am reading in several books at a time, and I have a lousy memory as to where I left off -- even if I have left a bookmark at the page. I have endeavored to design with a bookmark that will draw my attention to the exact place in a book that I stopped reading last -- even if that was months ago.
I succeeded.
The result is so incredibly simple that it can be incorporated into almost any bookmark that you prefer, with very little alteration of said bookmark. Here goes:
For the simplest version, cut a strip of paper (or cardstock) that measures about 3/4"-1" wide (20 mm - 25 mm wide) by about 1/4" longer than the book page is wide (1/4" =~6 mm). On one end of this strip of paper (on one side only), draw an arrow toward the edge "<--". Hence:
__________________________________________________

<--
_________________________________________________
This bookmark is to be inserted from the side of the book, not the top, and the arrow side of the bookmark should be facing the page where you stopped reading, with the arrow at the line at which you stopped reading.
Ah! you say, but my book has two columns. What then? Easy peasy. Just mark that first arrow with a "1" and on the other end of the same side of the bookmark draw an arrow pointed to its edge, and mark it "2", where the numbers refer to the column numbers:
__________________________________________________

<-- 1 2 -->
_________________________________________________
"I've got you now!" I hear you cry. "My book has three (or four) columns."
Still no big deal. Use a wider paper, 1.5"-2" wide, and fold it lengthwise. Opening it up, on one side write:
__________________________________________________

<-- 1 2 -->
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

_________________________________________________
...and on the other side write:
__________________________________________________

<-- 3 4 -->
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

_________________________________________________
Same idea. With the column number visible (by folding the bookmark appropriately) face the writing toward the relevant page with the relevant number indicating the column.
This bookmark requires only paper or card stock (thicker materials are less desirable for this use), just long enough to be clearly visible in the book (i.e., 1/4" wider than the page), but not so long that it will get moved around if it bumps something. (Friction between bookmark and pages is the thing here.)
None of this requires you to give up your very fancy bookmarks, which only need be annotated as indicated here.
Enjoy.
