My fuel savings are greater than my Bolt payment

My daily driver for four plus years has been a 2020 Ford Expedition, not ideal for a daily commute but it fits the family. I was able to work a hybrid work schedule during the summer and was only in office two days a week, so the fuel bill wasn't as bad as it could have been, but a couple of weeks into September, I had to go back to the office full time, and I started doing the math on my $110/week gas bill and figured I could buy and EV for less than my fuel bill. Once the math has been mathed, I could not stop thinking about it. Shortly thereafter, I bought my 2017 Bolt with 58k miles.

After one month of driving, the fuel savings are indeed greater than my monthly car payment. I really enjoy driving it and didn't realize how much anxiety I had with worrying about gas prices. I also don't have to worry as much about having to replace my Expedition as wear and tear on it will be far less.

Just happy to be here!

Maybe someone will wrap theirs!

Rescued This Bad Boy in an Auction

As the title says rescued and fixed the 2019 Bolt from an auction. It only had 22k miles. The vehicle was part of a county fleet, I assume it had such low mileage because people are still afraid to drive EVs, seen it happen in my company. So EVs would just sit in the fleet with little to no usage. It had damages in the passenger side as well as missing back seats. I paid about 7 thousand dollars for it and it cost about 2k more for the seats and replaced the passenger side door casings and painted them to match the rest of the vehicle. Picture of the fixed side in the last photo. All for 9k total, but I also got 1.5k from my job as an EV incentive they were running. All in for 7.5k after everything settled. Which I think is a great deal for a vehicle with less than 25k miles. As well as I was aware GM had replaced all the batteries in 2017-2021. Sure enough the battery is practically brand new little to no degradation. The only con I can see in this vehicle is that it doesn't have any fast charging. It would be perfect even with just the "slow" fast charging of 50kw.

Side note this thing is incredibly efficient. I drove a 2018 Chevy volt before. And was a fairly efficient driver, but the Bolt electric engine is leagues more efficient than the Volt. I am averaging 4.4 mile/ KWh for the first 2000 miles and a fair amount of it has been highway. In the city I regularly hit 6miles/kwh or higher.

2023 Bolt has problem reading keys

• Upvotes

Hey all! Pretty much the title. I have a 2023 Bolt and it's been having trouble recognizing the keys. It's doing it for both fobs. Sometimes it works great, sometimes it tells us "remote is not in vehicle" when it's next to us or it will not unlock the door using the handle, forcing me to get the key (always, ALWAYS, when my arms are full and my keys are at the bottom of my purse. Does it know?!). We have tried replacing the batteries in the fobs but that is only a very temporary fix. Is this something that others have experienced? Is it a fob problem or a Bolt problem? TIA!

Sudden battery degradation after dealership visit...

• Upvotes

Hello everyone, I was wondering if any body else has had a similar experience as me.

I have a 2020 Bolt EV that I purchased just over a year ago. Shortly after purchasing, I started hearing a small creak when accelerating and decelerating. That creak kept getting louder and louder, so I got my front axles replaced under a certified pre-owned warranty! (I'll make a separate post about it)

It drives like new now, with the exception of that a few days after getting my car back, I noticed that it seemed to have less range when charged to 80% than before. I looked through my pictures, and found some of the instrument cluster from before I took it to the dealership. Sure enough, it seems I have about 20-30 miles less range now than I did before I took it in... Before, when charged to 80%, I got about 180 Miles of range (A/C on). Now I get 160 Miles (A/C on).

Has anyone experienced this?

Why can't we have nice things? I was pleasantly surprised that the new update of MyChevrolet lets me set the cabin temperature remotely...but not on the Bolt EV Premier

Charging & Electrical Got a $50 parking ticket while charging my Chevy Bolt EV

I was charging my 2018 Chevy Bolt EV at the ChargePoint station near Bonner Hall at the University at Buffalo. The road is one-way, and I parked facing the opposite direction of traffic so the charging cable could reach my car.

I came back to find a $50 ticket for parking against the direction of traffic.

I understand the rule, but I was using a designated EV charging space and was trying to make the charger work with my car’s charging port location.
Do you think I have a reasonable chance of getting the ticket dismissed if I appeal it? Has anyone dealt with something similar at UB or another university?

Looking for honest opinions!

Charging & Electrical How to limit charging hours to off-peak

Post image
9 Upvotes

I only want my 2027 bolt to charge between 7 PM and 7 AM Monday through Thursday and 7 PM Friday to 7 AM Monday morning even if it hasn’t reached the set capacity. However, if I plug the car in when I get home and it calculates that it needs more time than 12 hours to charge it will start early and end late. Other than going out to the garage at 7 PM and 7 AM to plug the car in and unplug it, is there any way to force the car to limit it’s charging hours to the ones I’ve set?

Can anyone tell me how acorns were sitting on top of my cabin air filter when I pulled it out? Is there a squirrel sleeping in there?

2027 Bolt LT. I have all weather floormats and cargo mat, all the adapters, even the little cargo net thing lol. I don’t really care for cargo covers. Any other ideas? It seems like that’s all the accessories they offer.

First real maintenance completed

I have a 2022 EUV with 149,000mi. Best car I've ever owned, drive it on my horrible 230mi commute 4x a week. Use super cruise all the time, it's not perfect but it really really helps. Up until now I've just put on 7-8 tires total, 2 cabin filters, windshield washer fluid, and one rear wiper just a week ago. I recently did the 150k service of the battery and AC fluid replacement, and put in a new OEM battery from Chevy (first 12V replacement). About $1000 total for it all. Not bad, love these bolts

Car Wash Opened my Charging Port

I took my 2022 Bolt to the car wash yesterday and when I pulled out of the wash my charging port door was open. It didn’t seem wet in there and I think it was the dryer blower thing that opened it. However, now when I open the port the green light inside the port does not turn on. It charges fine but that light doesn’t work anymore. Anybody else ever had something similar? Could it be a fuse? Should I be concerned?

EUV damping upgrades?

You guys... I made a huge mistake: I drove my wife's Mazda CX-3 to work today and I was reminded how proper OE suspension tuning is done.

To highlight the issue: there's a high-speed bump on my commute and my EUV with 40k miles takes a while to finally settle while my wife's >85K mile Mazdz CX-3 settles immediately. I wish I had left her car at home after dropping the dog off at daycare and taken the EUV to work (as usual) since I'd still be living in blissful ignorance.

Okay, well, it's too late for the ignorance-is-bliss life. How do I improve the damping of the EUV?

I know you can use 2014 Cruze rear dampers on the EUV (with a stack of washers to take up the extra space). So, Bilsteins for the rears are easy enough.

But what about the front? Is there a better front spring/strut combo that isn't as rolie-polie as the OEM EUV fronts? Yes, I will consider shitty eBay coilovers at this point. I mean, not seriously, but consideration is consideration.

Newish owner, loss of mileage question

Thumbnail
gallery
11 Upvotes

Probably a simple explanation , but I charged my car to 100% and drove .5 miles home and when I went to get an item from my car I noticed I lost nearly 10 miles of range , it was stored in my garage but I also don’t live in a cold climate it was about 70 degrees

Why did I lose that range in that time? I’ve also noticed weird behavior on the range estimator where one day I will drive with the same patterns to a location and notice I’ll lose less than 5 miles , some days it’ll be 10 or more which is crazy because it’s less than 3 miles

I’ve read it’s just guessing essentially but I’m just trying to see if other people experience this or if I need to have my battery inspected ? Thanks for any advice !

Edit: thank you all for the insight and tips , now I can not worry that my battery has some sort of capacity issue

Maintenance?

Got myself a 2027 Bolt LT and absolutely loving it. It's a 2 year lease with 20k kms per year and I plan on returning it. I know there's no real maintenance for these things so can I just skip the calls from the dealership when they call me in for the multi point vehicle inspection? Can that be an issue when I'm returning it after 2 years? Does it vary from dealership to dealership? The only other thing mentioned in the manual is tire rotation which I'll be doing myself anyway. Based in Ontario, Canada.

Help Deciding on Wheel/Tire Setup

I recently found a set of 15" Sonic wheels that I plan to use on my '23 Bolt EV. My current setup is the OEM 17"s with Michelin CrossClimate 2s. I live in downtown Salt Lake City, UT, and keep the car in a parking garage and while last winter was very mild, this one is expected to be wetter due to El Niño. I still have the eco tires that came with the car (I bought the car new). The way I see it, I have at least three options and I'd like help in deciding which one is best.

  1. Dedicated winter tires (195/65R15 or 205/65R15, haven't decided) on the 15"s, stock Eco tires on the OEM 17"s for rest of year - sell 215/50R17 CC2

  2. Michelin CrossClimate 2s (195/65R15 or 205/65R15, haven't decided) on the 15"s, year-round - sell 215/50R17 CC2, 215/50R17 Eco, OEM 17" wheels

  3. 215/50R17 CC2 on OEM 17"s for winter, Eco tires on 15"s (195/65R15 or 205/65R15, haven't decided) for rest of year - sell 215/50R17 Eco

  4. ???

Are there other options I haven't considered? Storage isn't a problem and I rarely leave the Salt Lake Valley. I'm trying to maximize my range while still being safe in the winter.

Please help!
