Masonry pitcher finished

Made from a reclaimed bearing race. Think I nailed the geometry and heat treatment on this one, after working limestone for a couple of hours it’s still sharp enough to bite into my fingernail.

Thanks! Tempered it for a few hours in my cheap rosting oven at 200c. But could barely se a color change on the edge so didn’t trust it. So decided to do a draw temper with my hand held induction heater to be safe.

Wow nice job! I tend to make tools literally as I need them and never really spend the time to make them look pretty. They get the job done but none of them have ever looked as good as this does.

I tend to spend way too much time on the esthetic details on simple tools, to the point where it kind of hurts to use the tool. It’s a bit of ocd I guess.

Can you describe how you made this? I’ve been doing a stone addition to my forge, and my tools get dull so fast.

Did 3 normalization cycles for grain refinement, 900c, 815c and 730c 15 min soak at each and air cool down to black heat in between. For hardening I did a 15 min soak at 800c followed by a quench in canola oil pre heated to 150c and a water quench from 150c to room temperature. A fast quench oil like parks triple A would have been preferred. But I haven’t had the need to invest in a proper quench oil yet. Gorgeous, I'd want to hang it on my wall instead of smack it

Yeah that's a god damn nice piece of metal!

Ok, I see what you did with the cutting profile, it’s nearly square, how well does it hold up on granite

Not sure, don’t have much granite to cut. Don’t think any steel edged tool hold up very long against granite. But the limestone I’m cutting is pretty hard and dense, I suspect it’s in upper scale for what’s possible with limestone.

Would you consider selling one?

I’m flattered for asking. But the reality is that I barely have time to make the stuff I want for myself. When my family and nearest friends ask if I can make something for them I usually answer sure as long as you’re not in a hurry maybe within two years 😬

Fair enough!
