please fix Autofill and DD-WRT

I know that as of last month, the auto-login feature for routers like DD-WRT was removed because a vulnerability was found. However, now I cannot even use regular autofill, and I have to manually copy and paste the username and password. Please fix that!

LazyBW: An unofficial terminal interface for Bitwarden, with encrypted offline access

Hi everyone,

I'd like to share a small open-source project I've been working on called LazyBW.

It's a terminal user interface (TUI) for managing Bitwarden vaults on Linux, built in Go and using the official Bitwarden CLI (bw) for authentication and remote operations.

I started developing it for personal use because I wanted a more convenient way to work with my vault from the terminal. Since it has reached a reasonably usable state, I thought I'd share it here in case anyone else finds it useful.

Current features include:

  • Browsing, searching, creating, editing, and organizing vault items.
  • Staging and reviewing local changes before applying them to Bitwarden.
  • Reviewing remote changes, with soft and hard synchronization options.
  • Creating encrypted, READ-ONLY local replicas of personal vaults for offline access.
  • Support for Bitwarden US/EU servers.
  • Customizable keybindings and clipboard integration.

The encrypted offline replicas are probably the most distinctive feature. They allow you to access a previously saved copy of your personal vault without connecting to Bitwarden's servers.

LazyBW relies on the official Bitwarden CLI for normal online operations, but it is an unofficial, third-party application and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by Bitwarden, Inc in any way.

Installation (Linux, Go 1.26+):

git clone https://github.com/mntsx/LazyBW.git
cd LazyBW
go build -o lazybw ./cmd/lazybw
sudo install -m 755 lazybw /usr/local/bin/lazybw

This builds the latest code from the repository's default branch. The official Bitwarden CLI (bw) must be installed separately.

GitHub: https://github.com/mntsx/LazyBW

The project is licensed under MIT and currently supports Linux terminals, including SSH sessions.

I should mention that this project was primarily developed to meet my own needs. I've put considerable effort into making it as reliable and secure as possible, though there's always room for further testing and improvement.

2 step authentication (client authentication + master password authentication)
main screen (normal mode and offline mode)
make and push edits through the staging system

"sync" is hard to find in the browser extension

I just tried to update a login entry within the extension, and it wouldn't let me because I was viewing an out of date version of my data apparently. That's fine (I don't want to lose version control on my data), but when I tried to sync I couldn't find the sync feature...

I finally found it under settings / "vault options" / sync now. A few things strange about that:

  1. since when is sync an "option" !?! I don't want to change how things work in the future (an "option")... sync is something I want to do now (an "action").
  2. It's in a different place than the android app (where it's under 3-dot menu on top), so muscle memory failed me.
  3. it is buried 2 layers deep, which seems kind of odd for such a basic function.
    • [EDITED to strike through parts of that last comment, since responders pointed out that the need to sync is very infrequent]
  4. It would have been nice if the message which told me my data was out of date gave me a link/button taking me directly to sync... or at least give me a clue where to find the sync function. I didn't see any such link or clue offered to me (If it was offered then I missed it...I am not able to reproduce the error to confirm my memory)

That was version 2026.9.3. (I dont' know whether this is something that just changed or is in the process of changing... didn't investigate)

PS - I am by no means complaining, just decided to post this when it happened while the details were fresh in my memory. In general I'm very happy with Bitwarden. (Keep up the good work)

Master Password was never set

I was never prompted to create a Master Password. When I try to change it, the error says I never set a master password for this account. Is there any way to get past this? I'm just trying to export my vault. Thanks!

Export Bitwarden vault(s) to KeePass

Had a previous post that focused on exporting just the organization vault and then reworked it to include the personal vault.

TL;DR: The python script below will allow you to export everything your personal and/or organizational vaults (including attachments and TOTP codes) into an encrypted KeePass database file with a similar structure as your current Bitwarden vault.

PSA/LPT: As with all code posted on the internet, I encourage you to review the code and not just blindly run it. If you don't understand the code, you don't have to run it.

Details:

The end result is an encrypted KeePass .kdbx file with each individual collection listed as a folder, items in the archives (if selected), items in the trash (if selected), and then separate groups/folders for Credit Cards, Identities, and Secure Notes. While Passkeys aren't exported, if an entry has a Passkey, there will be a custom field/value in the .kdbx file, Passkey/missing, to help identify which one.

Also, note that while Bitwarden allows the same item to be associated with multiple collections, KeePass does not, as it treats each item separately. As a result, the KeePass database will have all your collection items in the correct collection just like Bitwarden, but there will also be separate folders for Personal Vault, Credit Cards, Identities, and Secure Notes with each of those respective items in there. Example: BW = 1 credit card in 3 collections exports 4 entries in KeePass: 3 credit card clones in each of those collections, plus a 4th in the Credit Card group/folder.

Finally, when you first open the KeePass database, right-click on the Root folder and sort alphabetically so you will have the Bitwarden personal vault items first followed by any collection items, and the separate/additional folders below.

Prerequisites:

(See script below for full code to copy and save as a .py file: bw_kp_export.py)

Note: I used the portable version of Python and instructions are verbatim what I typed (or pasted from notepad++) in the PowerShell window.

BW CLI

Python3.14.8.zip (most current version as of this post)

Python Package installer (Instructions and get-pip.py script)

KeePass Original or KeePassXC / KeePassXC Portable

  • Extract and place the bw_kp_export.py script, bitwarden, python files, and the get-pip.py script, in the same folder.
  • Edit the python###._pth file and remove the # to enable import site (scripts).
  • Open your PowerShell prompt in the python folder (example used, P:\python).

Enter the following commands:

PS P:\python>.\python.exe get-pip.py
(this populates the Lib and Scripts folders)

PS P:\python>.\python.exe -m pip install pykeepass
      (this installs the KeePass components)

PS P:\python>.\bw login <bw account email address here>
      (type/paste password and/or the 2FA code)

Expected Response:

To unlock your vault, set your session key to the `BW_SESSION` environment variable. ex:
$ export BW_SESSION="your session id number will be here"
> $env:BW_SESSION="copy this entire line from the $env to the end and paste it on the next line"

Enter the following commands:

PS P:\python>$env:BW_SESSION = "this is the line you copied from above and pasted here including the quote marks"

PS P:\python>.\bw sync

You can exclude this last step if you aren't exporting any organization vaults:

PS P:\python>.\bw list organizations

Expected Response:

<A list of all the organizations of which you are a member will be generated.>

Remember, you can only export the items of collections that you manage or are an admin.>

Before you run the export script, edit the bw_kp_export.py script.

  • Look for the USER CONFIGURATION section:
  • Add the organization id (or don't if you just want to export your personal vault)
  • Set the true/false flags for whether or not you want to include the archives, trash, and/or your personal vault
  • Don't forget to wrap the org id here in quotes.
  • Save changes.

Enter the following command:

PS P:\python>.\python.exe .\bw_kp_export.py

Expected Response:

Enter a password for your new bitwarden_export.kdbx file

This process shouldn't take more than 5-10 minutes (depends on the number of attachments and their files sizes). All activity live scrolls in the window and you will get a full report when complete.

There should now be an attachments folder and 4 additional files in your python folder:

bw_ov_export.json
bw_pv_export.json
bitwarden_export.kdbx
bitwarden_export.log

If you run into errors or it seems to hang, break out of the script, delete the those four files and the attachments folder, and try again. Remember, to re-run the sync if any changes are made or you will get some errors related to a mismatch.

Once you have confirmed the database opens in KeePass, probably a good idea to logout of your Bitwarden session (and be mindful that the bw_xx_export.json files and attachments folder are unencrypted copies of your vault(s)).

Enter the following command:

PS P:\python>.\bw logout

Expected Response:

You have logged out.

Here's the script: bw_kp_export.py

"""
bw_kp_export.py

Python script to export a Bitwarden personal and/or organization vault into a KeePass database file
(including attachments and TOTP codes) organized into KeePass groups similar to the Bitwarden collections.

Group structure:
    Root
├── a_Personal vault (BW personal items)
     ├── <Collection Name 1>
     ├── <Collection Name 2>
     ├── ...
     ├── z_Archive (BW archived items)
├── z_Credit Cards (BW credit cards)
     ├── z_Identities (BW identities)
├── z_Secure Notes (BW secure notes)
     └── z_Trash (BW trash items)

Multi-collection items: Except for Archive and Trash items, cloned collection items
are added to the corresponding group and to their specific group category.

Passkeys: If a passkey is detected, a custom field 'PassKey' is added.
No detailed passkey data is exported. (search for attr:passkey)

Prerequisites (run in PowerShell BEFORE this script):
    bw login
    $env:BW_SESSION "session_id"
    bw sync
bw list organizations # identify your organization id for the export step and configure the options

Then just run:
    python bw_kp_export.py

Outputs:
bw_ov_export.json - unencrypted Bitwarden organization vault
bw_pv_export.json - unencrypted Bitwarden personal vault
    bitwarden_export.kdbx - encrypted KeePass database
attachments/ - unencrypted folder with Bitwarden vault attachments
bitwarden_export.log - full report: survey, settings, results, detailed log

Is Bitwarden really beginner-friendly, or did I choose the wrong password manager?

I used to be fairly tech-savvy, including managing networks, VPNs, and digital phone systems for an executive office suite business. But technology has changed, and I’m certainly no expert anymore.
After my iPhone flagged several compromised passwords, I researched password managers with ChatGPT and ultimately chose Bitwarden.
I’ve now spent hours over multiple days importing passwords, cleaning up duplicates, changing compromised passwords, and troubleshooting login and autofill issues between my iPhone and Windows PC. I’m still struggling to get everything working smoothly.
Is this a normal learning curve for first-time password manager users, or is Bitwarden better suited for more technically advanced users?
For those who’ve tried multiple password managers, is there a genuinely easier alternative that doesn’t compromise security?
I’m not criticizing Bitwarden. I’m just wondering whether I chose the wrong tool for my needs.

Confused about what this particular Windows Passkey feature is

So I read this and got very excited: https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitwarden/comments/1wuepm8/windows_11_26h2_passkey_login_support_w_prf/

But I then realised - there's a chance I've misunderstood what this even is.

As far as I'm aware, there are three different passkey-related things being worked on:

  1. Use Windows Hello vault to unlock browser extension without having to use the desktop app as a bridge (this is the one I'm rooting for)
  2. The ability to use passkeys across the bitwarden family (e.g. if you are logged into the desktop app for example, you can use that to then login into the browser extension).
  3. The ability to use BW passkeys on native desktop apps.

I know all 3 are being worked on, but what does that link above refer to?

What is the safest Bitwarden pattern for credentials used by several AI assistants?

Giving several assistants one shared vault login makes rotation and incident review simple to describe but hard to trust. It becomes difficult to tell which assistant read a secret, revoke only one workflow, or keep an assistant that needs a single API token from seeing unrelated credentials. Copying secrets into separate vaults improves isolation but creates stale duplicates.

Would you use a separate machine or service identity for each assistant, one collection per workflow, and short-lived access where the downstream service supports it? I am also considering an inventory that records the secret owner, allowed action, environment, rotation date, and the assistant identities that may retrieve it, without putting the secret itself in that inventory.

How do Bitwarden users handle least privilege, rotation, emergency revocation, and auditability for unattended workflows? In particular, what should happen when two assistants need the same credential but should not inherit every other item in the same collection?

Will Bitwarden integrate with AI agents like GrokBot?

1Password already has an integration with GrokBot and Codex. When can we expect Bitwarden to offer something similar. Currently, I have to manually enter my credentials every time I use GrokBot’s virtual browser, since logins aren’t saved between sessions. It ruins the experience.

Seriously Concerned About Bitwarden's Performance and Long-Term Reliability

Post image
234 Upvotes

I've been following Bitwarden's GitHub issues for a while, and I'm becoming increasingly concerned about the product's stability and development priorities.

There are over 700 open issues, including reports of memory leaks and high CPU usage. Some similar problems have been reported for more than two years and still seem unresolved.

What's even more concerning is that these are basic performance issues in a production release. Some users have reported RAM usage (Memory Leak) exceeding 1GB just by opening the extension popup, even with a completely new account and an empty vault.

You can try it yourself. Open the current Bitwarden extension on Chromium, leave the popup open for about two minutes, and watch its RAM and CPU usage.

What frustrates me most is how these bugs are prioritized. Serious performance issues have remained in production for weeks, yet Bitwarden is still promoting UI updates and asking for feedback on beta designs. I understand that different teams work on different things, but shouldn't basic stability come first?

With each update, it feels like more patches are being added while older problems remain. Over time, this only makes me more worried about the product's reliability.

Looking at the issue backlog, I also wonder whether Bitwarden is understaffed. Of course, I don't know the internal situation, but I can't help questioning whether limited resources, heavy workloads, or compensation that doesn't adequately support employees might be affecting motivation and development quality. If that's the case, I wouldn't blame the developers. These are management issues.

I'm also concerned about the long-term direction. As the user base grows and people become more dependent on the product, price increases or licensing changes can become ways to keep the business running. We've already seen recent pricing changes, and I worry about where things might go from here.

Ultimately, everyone chooses which password manager to trust. Personally, I'm seriously considering moving away from Bitwarden to something more stable, with a clearer long-term vision, before these problems become even harder to fix.

I genuinely hope Bitwarden improves, but right now, it's difficult to feel confident in a product when fundamental issues keep piling up without clear solutions.

Login problem with Bank of America (autofill)

Is anyone experiencing an autofill issue on the Bank of America page?

I tried Custom Fields, but it still isn't working.

Thanks

Logging into gmail, Bitwarden recognizes the gmail password box, even shows the autofill password pop up, but doesn't autofill when I press pop up

It was working last week, now it isn't, what am I doing wrong here?

I'm using the Bitwarden extension on Firefox (which have no other extensions except Bitwarden), Windows 11.

THINGS I'VE TRIED

Full cache clear = didn't work

Reinstalled extension = didn't work

New firefox profile = didn't work

Ctrl shift L = didn't work

I've got no excluded/blocked domains

Disabled firefox password manager = didn't work

Email autofill works, password autofill doesn't (URI = https://accounts.google.com/, host domain)

Can we redesign the vibecoded macOS desktop app?

To start off, I don't have proof that the design is vibecoded. But it certainly looks vibecoded. So can we redesign it please into something that gives off less AI vibes?

I'm not sure why the app was even redesigned to begin with. The old design was great.

Lost Master Password - Possibly An Easier Solution?

After spending a ridiculous amount of time this weekend, trying to export <<MY OWNERSHIP, NOT BITWARDEN's>> data and trying various workarounds for the infamous lost master password - I think I found a solution that may work for some folks. {And just how OFTEN, and to what PERCENTAGE of users does this lost master password problem?]

Here is what worked for me. I was logged into Bitwarden on my Android phone app, and my settings allowed me to grant login access from other devices (desktop app, browser plugins, website). I unlock my android Bitwarden app with biometrics, but I also added a 4 digit PIN, just in case. If you don't have this scenario/setup, stop reading here, it probably won't work.

You have to log into the Bitwarden WEBSITE (not the app, browser plug-in, etc.) and there you will find the Trusted Contact option (incomplete instructions on the help site, link below).

The basic steps are, you add a trusted contact with your own alternate (work, 2nd personal) or a friend's email address, you/they open the welcome email that Bitwarden sends out, you/they set up a 2nd Bitwarden account with their/your alternate email address,. Next, you have to be logged into Bitwarden WEBSITE ONLY under both accounts (separate tabs), and have the email app/webpage for both the orignal account & recovery account email addresses (multiple tabs open). Once you have all of this set up, you grant access to the recovery contact (or they can request it), and they have to accept it, and then eventually the recovery contact can "take over" the account and reset the password on the original account.

It is truly annoying as hell to click through all of these steps, but it worked for me (better than trying to outsmart the Export Vault-Enter Master Password BS requirement).

iOS autofill - don't offer default (base domain filtered) suggestions

I'm trying out BW to get host matching, instead of just base domain matching.

However, in iOS, the autofill offers me all the base domain matches from BitWarden anyway, and I have to scroll to the bottom of a long list to see the BitWarden button where I can get the host filtered list.

I understand that this is expected but the interesting thing is that Microsoft Edge does not do this. It offers no suggestions in that first autofill list, and I just get the button to choose Edge (and my other password manager, LastPass).

This is what I want in BitWarden - no "default" suggestions with base domain in that first list, just the buttons.

(Although Edge has this behavior it still isn't useful to me as it doesn't offer host matching at all.)

I'll freely admit I can't tell exactly what's going on, but I can tell that i don't get the initial unhelpful result with Edge but not with Bitwarden.

A fair new licensing assessment?

So as understood, Bitwarden clients published to the app stores will now follow the similar closed-source “Chrome” browser model based on Chromium code?

• ”[CHROMIUM browser] is not going closed-source”
• ”You can still fork [Chromium]”
• ”No change to [open-source Chromium], [any] licensing change affects those who are [users of the closed-source CHROME browser]”
• ”The free [to use Chrome browser] is here to stay permanently”

Would this be a fair comparison?

Build your own FOSS clients

In response to all the fuss about BW's license changes to their distributed client applications, I packaged build toolchains for the FOSS android and browser clients using docker.

For my convenience, I put them in the same docker-compose.yml as my vaultwarden instance. docker compose --profile clients up to build the latest clients or docker compose up -d to just run the server.

Then, you just distribute the client binaries. There's a readme with instructions (since they're unsigned).

I used an LLM to help set up the toolchains. The upstream code is untouched. I didn't build iOS because that requires Apple hardware. You can probably do it with a GH action on Apple hardware, but I'm glad that's not my problem to solve.

Can my employer see my vault?

I work at a corporation with 75k employees. Office job. Naturally, I started saving my work logins in my bitwarden vault.

I run the chrome and edge extensions on my office desktop (windows 11 desktop PC).

I understand that if someone stops by my desk and my vault is active/open, they can see my vault. I also understand that if my vault remains opened, IT can remote into my desktop and see my vault.

My question is: if the vault is locked/logged out (the extension icon is gray), can my employer still access it?

Another question: because I use the extension daily, is my employer able to (non actively) make a copy of my vault? I'm not too worried about IT actively coming into the machine to make an export of my vault. I'm more worried about the system automatically making a carbon copy and saving/retension of the vault.

EDIT: Thank you all for your guidance. I will definitely create a new bitwarden account just to use for work related passwords. But I do have a follow up question. The following logins/accounts below.....should they go into my personal bitwarden vault or my work bitwarden vault?

A. 401k account. Empower is the company my employer use

B. FSA/HSA account. P&A Group is the company my employer use for both health and dependent care FSA

C. Healthcare accounts (United Healthcare, CVS Caremark, Metlife Dental, Eyemed and Anthem BCBS)

D. Edenred account for commuter benefits

E. Supplemental life insurance account

F. Pension account.

Solved GrapheneOS: "An error has occurred", and YubiKey login fails after reinstall

The Bitwarden app on my GrapheneOS phone kept showing "An error has occurred", and my vault has not synced for about a week. Clearing the cache and switching between wifi and mobile data made no difference. I then uninstalled and reinstalled the app. Now I cannot log in with my YubiKey at all. I only get "Invalid verification code".

What I have tested so far: - Logging in to the web vault on desktop with the same YubiKey works - status.bitwarden.com: no incidents

Has anyone seen this on GrapheneOS, and what fixed it? Thanks!

Excessive RAM usage when extension menu is open in Brave Browser

Post image
29 Upvotes

Bitwarden is the only extension I use. For the past 3 to 4 months, it has been taking 5 to 8 seconds for the menu to appear when I click the icon. Recently, I’ve also noticed unusually high RAM usage whenever the extension’s UI is open.

Backup my Bitwarden to other Password manager?

IDK, how true it is but I have heard from the community that Bitwarden is moving to complete monetization and closed source. I heavily depend on Bitwarden for everything!

From Banking, Food apps, Investment portfolios, social media to even gaming accounts are all saved on bitwarden. If tomorrow bitwarden does something crazy to monetise itself and lock me out, my entire life can be ruined (I'm NOT KIDDING)!!!

It just made me realise how dependent I'm on this one company. Maybe I have put all my eggs in one basket, which is very dangerous. I remember how a while back when Bitwarden decided to implement a two step verification out of nowhere, it created panic, chaos and confusion in the community.

I really don't think Bitwarden is as reliable as they say so I'm thinking of moving to a backup password manager, just so if I get locked out of bitwarden, it won't be the end of my life!!!

Do you guys have any suggestion? Also, what other backup/contingency plans have you guys came up with to address this situation? (I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one thinking about this!)
