Recommendation Looking for a trivia night for the common person

The wife and I would like to find a trivia night in the area that is a little less... Sportsy I guess. We have gone to a few but the questions tend to be too sports oriented for us. We are of the nerdier sort. Something Halloween themed would be cool given the current season but I can't find anybody saying what the themes are.

So far I've checked Crooked Mouth, McGirks, Beer Tree, and Belmar. I have to assume someone else is doing trivia nights. Right?

Recommendation Does Anyone Pump Old Fuel Oil?

I've got two old oil tanks in my basement in Endwell NY. My father-in-law (RIP) had them filled probably back at the beginning of 2012. When he passed later that year we moved in and have not used the existing system. Now that we are exploring our options for upgrades to our home we are realizing we need those tanks drained. I personally would love to just give it away to someone who may still have a use for it. I'd love it even more to make an extra buck, but that's pie-in-the-sky hopes and not realistic.

So does anyone know a small business or anyone that wants to drain old fuel oil?

tl;dr: Endicott is compiling a list of potential homeowners to include in it's grant application for this NYS program. Funding can go towards home repairs such as roof, plumbing, heating, windows, etc.

I’m new here and a single male in my late 20s. I don’t find it easy to make friends from work because colleagues are just colleagues to me.

However I’d really want to hang out with some ppl around my age 20-40 and develop some organic relationships. Any suggestions?

Local Politics Local politics in Johnson City

Post image

For those of us in and around the village if johnson city it may actually be time to lock in and vote for these local elections. To be clear I grew up here but for a long time couldn't have told you who the mayor was or picked a trustee out of a line up. Started paying attention last year and just wow. No idea so much was actually happening in this place. And its been interesting to see how the trustee people try to stand up for themselves after what looks like years of just enjoying being figure heads. Something i learned is just how nasty they can be. Not being nice doesnt disqualify someone from being elected but maybe being nice should be a consideration.

Anyway im saying if you're in jc consider voting because I think these old peopl3 in office just dont belong there any more.

Recommendation House cleaner in Johnson City

Hi, I have a two story house in Johnson City that I’d like to have cleaned. If anyone has any recommendations for home cleaners, that would be great! I reached out to Elite Cleaning and Brushes Over Broome and they’re pricier than I was expecting.

For reference, first floor has a powder room, large entry room, kitchen and dining nook, and a living room. Second floor would only clean master bedroom and attached bathroom and one side room.

Recommendation Recommendations - Bridge Repair

Hello! I have a bridge that connects my house to the road and it needs new wood beams. Does anyone here have any recommendations on a company that could handle this? I have been trying to find out who to contact and have not had much success. We are in the Maine/Whitney Point/Berkshire area. Any tips appreciated!

Recommendation Adult Rec Volleyball

I'm aware of the YMCA run volleyball leagues, but I've already missed registrations for the Fall league, so that won't come back around until the winter league. Are there any other places within the area to play rec volleyball at this moment that's not past registration? Could be vestal, endicott, johnson city, whatever. I already have a full team to sign up with, so if anyone could just spit names to look into it would be much appreciated.

Local Politics More JC Trustee Election Tea

Thumbnail

After seeing another JC post, I felt like I'd share more that I've learned following this shit show.

The dude who keeps leaving all the creepy business cards and door hangers made an update to his site yesterday about literally paying a political private investigator service (idk what they're known as formally but that's basically what it reads like) and basically removed it the same day. I managed to get a screenshot when I first saw it because....again isn't this a lil much for a trustee election?

But the real tea that I find batshit is that from what I saw (it's Google AI's summary so it might not SUPER accurate) but is a random person paying that much to investigate a candidate?? Like if it's starting off even remotely close to 17k, that's INSANE if it's not campaign funded right?

Plus some of my friends who know how much I love following this said they saw Lori Thorn (Republican candidate) handing out Gary's creepy little business cards/door hangers with her campaign stuff.

Idk again because I'm more invested in him coming off as crazy versus the rights/wrongs of a campaign legally but that's like....not legal right?

Gary can hand out the weird stuff all he wants as a private citizen but if the candidate is handing out his stuff, doesn't that mean it's a campaign effort technically? Like he can pay people to do it but can he pay a candidate to hand out the lil schizo cards without it being legally weird AF for campaign laws?

Like his site says he's not affiliated with either Republican campaign but is a rando really paying thousands for a PI service plus the candidates handing out his stuff makes it seem like it's a really badly done coverup. It's basically giving me Walmart version of House of Cards.

The first screenshot isn't on his site anymore which made me die lmao but I'm happy I grabbed it since in Gary's words this is "the most important election in our history."

Also someone pls tell me if they've tried his amazing soup he yaps about on his website, according to the few people who've suffered through me talking about this who go to the Ukrainian church, they've never seen him lmao

Recommendation Places around the area to work/study from?!

Hi all!

I’m a new resident of Binghamton and I’m excited to be here.

My work allows me to be completely remote which is a blessing… but I can already foresee my home office getting old real quick.

I’m looking for great places around the area I’d be able to switch it up and work/study from! I’m aware of public libraries (which aren’t a bad option) but looking for more coffee shop, cafe, etc. recommendations.

Any recommendation is greatly appreciated and thank you in advance!! 😁

Housing Apartment Rental?

Hi all, I am in need of an apartment to rent in Binghamton and I feel like I’ve been looking for weeks with no solid leads.

Backstory- moving to the area from NC in a month or two for work. I’ve done some research on different neighborhoods and towns nearby, so I get what is safe and convenient to highways.

It seems like most of the apartments I find are student housing, and it’s hard to filter that out on Zillow or apartments.com

Looking for 2 bedroom with in unit laundry.

Any advise would be appreciated.

*Edit to say that I looked at Indian Ridge and $1600 for a 2BR seems like a terrible deal. Trying to stay at $1500

Recommendation What to do on Halloween?

Hi all. I had planned to throw a halloween party this year, but i have no help in doing it and am frankly pretty disappointed. It’s my favorite holiday and no one around me wants to celebrate. Is there anything going on in Binghamton that would be safe for a 26 y.o. Woman to go do, without a group of friends with her? I’m not one to go out alone due to safety, but I’m over waiting for people to do things with!

EDIT: I think I’m going to hand candy out instead! I am lucky enough to live where I believe I’ll have a good amount of trick or treaters, and I’ll dress up & decorate the porch too. Keep the suggestions coming if you think of any others though, make Halloween fun again!

Food Can we bring back the Brass Lantern Tavern in Chenango Bridge 👀

While it’s sad to see A Tavolo close, wishing the owners all the best in their retirement!

That being said, can we start a petition to bring back the Brass Lantern Tavern (BLT) or something similar? 😂

I could really go for some of those Tavern Wings and Tavern Nachos right about now!

Anyone else miss that place? It used to be a great option in addition to McGirks, Uncles, etc.

Photos A Night on the State Street - photos of Binghamton in the fog

The mist rolled in off the hills, thick and heavy, burying State Street in a suffocating silence. It was the night of Columbus Day — schools were out, offices empty, and the thin trickle of people who usually walked these sidewalks had simply stayed home.

The town had left its best years in the previous decades. The factories that once built it stood empty along the river, windows broken out like missing teeth. What remained was propped up by light: oversized digital billboards cycling through the same tired ads, and harsh LED streetlights that bleached everything a sickly white. A few blocks of State Street had recently been rebranded as the "Art District," complete with sleek galleries, modern murals, and manicured street decor. But gentrification was just a fresh coat of paint on a crumbling wall; it couldn't hide the truth that the good days were long gone.

Detective Vance collapsed back against the side of the blinking squad car in the middle of the street. Dark crimson seeped through his coat, dripping onto the wet pavement. Darkness was closing in around the edges of his vision.

Beside him, Miller dropped to his knees, panic cracking his voice. "Vance, stay with me! Paramedics are coming. They’re gonna make it on time."

"Not in this fog," Vance rasped, his voice barely a whisper above the idling engine. He grabbed Miller’s coat collar, his grip surprisingly fierce despite his fading strength. "Listen, kid."

“I’m not leaving you—”

"Look," Vance choked out, trembling as he pointed a blood-stained finger toward the curb. Just a few feet away lay a heavy decorative terra-cotta vase—part of the city’s art walk beautification project. It was tipped over, dark potting soil spilled across the clean sidewalk like an open wound.

“Holiday,” Vance breathed. “Crew’s off. Nobody touches these today.” He coughed, and something rattled deep in his chest. “Check the soil. Before they—”

Vance’s hand went limp, falling to the wet concrete.

Miller knelt alone in the quiet, surrounded by towering neon advertisements glowing uselessly into the fog. He looked at his mentor, then at the spilled dark earth resting on the pavement. In a dying city clinging to appearances, someone had buried something right out in the open — and Vance had just paid with his life to uncover it.

--

Just a short passage to bring soul to the Binghamton photos. I hope you have been enjoying the misty air, folks.

Discussion 24h or late night grocery

Maybe its just me, but I miss 24h /late night grocery access. I'm sitting here craving some dry beef sausage and sharp cheddar cheese on town house crackers, but its 2am and almost nothing is open where I can get those things. I live pretty close to some 24h gas stations, but its highly unlikely they're carrying thos specific items, and I'm not trying to get South London'd over some finger food. le sigh.
