Discussion Suggestions for teen with suspected BED

I need some suggestions. I have a teen who I'm pretty sure has Binge Eating Disorder. She is in 8th grade and it has gotten so bad. Last night she ate 8 ice cream cookie sandwiches. 😭😭 We have discussions, and she tells me about how shes feeling in the moment. Like she can not control it. Its like she has to eat them all. Until they are gone.

She will get up in the middle of the night to search for any snacks she can binge on.

This isn't about the weight gain at all. My family has a huge history of t2d. I too am a t2d and deal with BED.

Im noticing her mobility has decreased.

I've brought this up with her psychiatrist, but maybe im not stressing just how bad it is. Even if theres no snacks, she will eat whatever she can find. Uncooked pasta is the biggest thing. 2 nights about she ate half on a 16 Oz pack of pasta.

In the past she's begged me to ask her doctor for a glp1.😭😭 But shes 14 and our insurance doesn't cover it unless your a diabetic.

Shes also already on vyvanse, which hasnt helped.

I just don't know what to do. Hers is so much worse then mine. And its started so much earlier.

Any suggestions?

Cannot stop binge eating due to depression

Currently the most depressed I’ve been in my life. I have been binge eating thousands of calories every.single.day for the 3 weeks. I’ve gained about 10 pounds so far. I recently finished uni with what now I see was a completely useless degree. I’m broke, living in a shitty shared house with strangers and working a shitty low paying job. I genuinely do not want to be alive, and I cannot afford therapy. No free services where I live.
I just don’t want to be here anymore and I can’t stop binge eating because in my mind, I don’t even see the point of stopping, even though I know I’m just sabotaging all my chances of getting out of this shit environment/getting a better job if I’m too sick, fat and broke from buying all the food to even start applying for better positions. I just don’t wanna be here.

Binge/Relapse After 2 weeks...

I binged today after 2 weeks of not doing it. I feel sick, but it wasn't too bad if I'm being honest. In the past my binges have been extreme, I'm talking 5-10k. Today it was "only" around 800. I actually managed to stop myself, which I'm proud of.

I'm going to forgive myself and get right back on track tomorrow. It sucks that it happened but if I keep thinking about it / beat myself up because of it, it's gonna cost me more. Keep fighting y'all!

Vent I love food

Hi so i just binge ate like crazy. A whole pizza, biscuits, so much chocolate, and other stuff. I don’t know how my stomach can hold this much quantity of food.

I’ve been feeling lonely and desperate for happiness lately. Food genuinely makes me feel better. I love food. Right now, I don’t even feel bad about binge eating. I know i’ll be okay. And you’ll be okay. It’s okay. My body is producing fat right now as i speak but it’s okay. It’s not the end of the world and I know I will get myself together.

It’s a real issue tho because food genuinely makes me feel better. I can’t hold my emotions together and can’t express them neither. So much going on in my mind. I probably need some time off work, take some days off, but i can’t at the moment. I asked to work on remote tho.

Thanks food, for making me feel a little better. A part of me feels very guilty and disgusted, but for some minutes or relief, it’s okay.

Advice Needed Want to replace bingeing but I have no interest in things

I'm seeing a lot of advice about replacing bingeing by getting obsessed with something else, but due to depression and a lifelong struggle with a sense of self, I find it so hard to be truly interested in anything. Anyone else have this issue? How did you overcome it to live a full life where you find joy and comfort in things outside of food?

I work out, walk my dog, read, sometimes do crosswords and I have a guitar but nothing is my go to hobby or really a hobby at all.

Progress Finally, just one day off

Today is finally the first day in forever that I haven't binge eaten! I felt like I was stuck in an endless tunnel, but today is different. Even though it's only 6 in the evening, I would normally have eaten half the kitchen by noon.

Day 4: check in

Yesterday wasnt the best. Didnt binge, but did the things that usually lead up to one. Access to food was the only thing that prevented it. 😬

It was a close one so im refocusing. Today i will eat lunch at noon and dinner at 6 with a snack of popcorn around 3.

update: i was doing so well. ive been focusing on not secret eating or impulse eating. i ate too many calories (~2000) because i wasnt counting (im a short old lady with a sedentary job i only need 1500 to maintain.) I did avoid vending machines, work treats!

Im in a grey area.....did i break my streak? I dont know. Im going to get up and do it again tomorrow but be more calorie focused.

update 2: grey area no more..... ate a whole cup of chocolate chips. *sigh* back to day one tomorrow. šŸ˜”

Support Needed Starting Vyvanse

(Pls delete if not allowed!!)

Hi all, 20F, have struggled with BED since I was around 16, I was on phentermine for a year when I was 18/19 and it helped but unfortunately my BED has taken control again. It’s not even abt the weight, it’s mainly how much of a toll it’s taking on me mentally. My psychiatrist has decided to start me on Vyvanse to see if it will help. Has anyone been on this medication and has it helped? What are some things I should look out for? Any tips or experience is appreciated!

Got kicked out of binge eating disorder group because I kept on reminding them I don't restrict and still binge

Throughout the 5 months I was never once given a tip on how to not binge at every meal. Meanwhile they would constantly offer advice for the girl who never ate breakfast or lunch. Today I skipped a session and usually we are given a warning but I was kicked out. This was from one of the top hospitals in my country in Canada. I'm so pissed, there's no hope for me

Support?

I’m 19F and have been struggling with BED for majority of this year. It has been so defeating and I deal with a lot of shame and embarrassment especially with the amount of weight that I’ve gained due to bingeing. I’ve got great friends and family but I’ve really isolated myself because of my struggles and the fear that none of them will understand.

I was wondering if there are any group chats out there or simply anyone wanting to make friends to kind of support each other through recovery.

Return to binging after accidental medication withdrawal

I hope this is allowed as this is related to a glp1 medication that I unexpectedly went without for 4+ days, but it’s about how it’s sent my binge eating into a rollercoaster. So for background I have been taking Saxenda(Liraglutide) daily since March and it has helped my binge eating greatly. I had an insurance issue and ran out of my medication so I was unexpectedly off it for 4 days or so, cold turkey. Not pleasant. The week before this happened I had a major loss of appetite which I attributed to severe depression & anxiety. Since before that I hadn’t changed my Saxenda dose in 2 weeks and was feeling good. So my body was probably hungry & deprived from the last week and then unexpectedly being off the medication for a few days, I have felt like I am tweaking out and have had ravenous hunger and binges. To the point where I feel ill and icky from eating too much. I was thankfully able to refill my prescription, and have been back on Saxenda the past 2 days. But the whole situation has freaked me out, and made me feel like I’m not really recovering from binge eating, it’s just the medication. I don’t foresee being able to afford the medication forever. But man I hope someday it won’t be so hard to not get out of control with my binging. I just started with a new dietician who seems like she will be really helpful. So I hope that I can heal from this compulsive eating disorder with or without medication.

Advice Needed Changing from 1 type of BED to another

• Upvotes

Hello im posting for the first time because I’m very desperate for help. I started college a month ago and have spent my entire first five weeks binging. I have occasionally suffered from binge eating in the past but it was a very different situation. I restricted a lot and was losing a lot of weight and would occasionally slip up and binge back then it was very easy to break out of because I know about the binge restrict cycle. I just followed everyone’s advice which is don’t restrict and it will stop. But what no one talks about is the kind of BED that’s not restriction caused im not hungry im just gaining tons or weight because I can’t stop binging. I don’t see any triggers i really don’t think restriction is the issue if anything it kind of controls me. It just feels like a totally different disorder now and I feel like there is zero solution because I can’t identify the root. I am so lost and just feel like giving up im so tired.

Discussion how do you tell the difference between normal snacking and binging?

I know this may seem like a dumb question but I have been struggling alot with determining when my snacking is normal snacking compared to binging. I dont like to consider calories as the only thing to determine whether or not is considered a ā€œbingeā€ bc i can binge on cucumbers for all I care but it would still be binging and therefore still reinforcing the same bad habits just without the negative calorie impact like weight gain.
The main reason i think im struggling with this is because i was on and off binging for almost a year straight now and the guilt i feel like has clouded my mind. I dont know how to enjoy normal meals or snacks without convincing myself that its a bad thing or that it may be me binging or that it can lead to a binge. For example, i really like chips and I can easily binge on them i.e eat whole large sized bags and multiple of them all by myself in one sitting. sometimes i still like to snack on them though, i eat a normal amount (it was weighed out to the suggested serving size on the bag) and my brain will somehow convince me that its was a mini binge bc of the fact that it was chips (this happens with any high calorie food now) even tho a part of me knows thats not true. This has started happening more recently too as i have began to try and get a grip on my BED. I am not counting calories or restricting myself food and trying to eat normal 2-3 meals a day with snacks and starting with focusing on no longer eating once i am full. i think me being hyperaware of my actions when i eat has maybe gone too far.
idk if this makes any sense but ya
