Hi all,
I volunteer at burning man and repair bikes there. I’ve done that for 11 years now. So when I’m talking about “how did this happen”, imagine an old shitty cruiser bike that’s never been maintained and is rusted and absolutely caked with dust and old shitty fur.
A burner came in with a cruiser bike that had a pedal brake on the rear wheel.
-Somehow- the rear wheel got stuck in such a way that the pedal brake applied itself whether you were going forwards OR backwards, so effectively she couldn’t move more than half a wheel rotation in either direction on the rear wheel.
We didn’t have the space or weight to bring spare wheels this year so we basically dusted it off with an air pressure hose, and applied dry lube over and over and over, flipping the bike from side to side to have gravity penetrate the oil.
After about 30 minutes it finally loosened up and she was able to ride.
I never figured out the mechanics of how it failed. How on earth did a pedal brake suddenly work in both directions, and what is the “real world” fix to this? A new wheel or?
Thanks!
PS go easy on me, I am not a professional bike repair person whatsoever and have learned only from others (and probably have terrible habits that you’d never do if you were trying to get a bike to last more than a week).
