Peak New England

Peak New England: I rode about 36 miles today in spectacular early Fall weather: Cool, dry, crisp air and the foliage reaching maximum color.

I took the Reformatory Branch Rail Trail through the Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, and along the packed-earth "Battle Road," following the route taken by the British soldiers marching to, and then from, Lexington and Concord.

Gorgeous.

Driver almost hit me, followed me for close to half a mile, and called me a c*** repeatedly for that whole time

This woman almost hit me from the opposing lane of traffic - I was crossing with my bike in the pedestrian crosswalk where Albany and Mass Ave meet. She was taking a right turn. I yelled at her out of surprise (which happens when almost hit). She then rolled down her window and began verbally assaulting me, saying she “let me go” and repeatedly called me a c*** and followed me. I repeated that she almost hit me throughout. The biker behind me was alarmed enough they took a photo of her license plate and told me they’d text it to me if I shared my number.

I’m guessing no recourse here….but any way I can meaningfully document this interaction, if for no other reason to start (or add to) a paper trail?

Biking from Malden to Woburn?

I'm going to be switching jobs soon and was looking to get an e-bike to commute. I live in the Maplewood area and would be working by BJ's. Google Maps recommends Lebanon St -> Franklin St -> William St. I've had to drive a good portion of that stretch over the past year for personal reasons and I don't recall there being great bike infrastructure, but unsure if I'm missing a path.

Thoughts?

This is just based on my personal experience but I think anti cyclist hate might be getting worse locally. Are you all seeing the same thing?

I feel like I've had more people yell slurs and abuse out the window and do things like actively try to block bike lanes with their car to stop cyclists going past in traffic this year, than in my last decade of riding.

And local Facebook is worse than it's ever been in terms of people openly talking about how much they hate cyclists, cyclists are all arrogant scum who think they own the road and don't respect anyone else, symbols of everything going wrong in our cities, etc

To take the lane or not to take the Lane

Post image
12 Upvotes

Got honked at for taking the lane here this morning. (To the left of the black sedan, so I can proceed when straight traffic gets the right of way instead of waiting for the right turn signal to clear) I did so when pedestrians in the crosswalk had the right of way, and it was right in front of an 18-wheeler, so I didn't think he could actually accelerate faster than I could, so I thought nothing of it.

Anyway some in a black sedan (not the one pictured) ends up honking at me (I think) as I'm passing through the intersection, because he has somehow ended up on my right as I'm making my way back to the bike lane.

Thoughts? Definitely could consider not taking the middle lane in this spot in the future because I do hold up traffic slightly, but felt very weird to see someone actually complain, especially not the actual truck.

This guy, while somewhat annoying, becomes a complete dick and is the caricature of who the anti-bike people at public meetings and online commentary refers to.

Dude, you’re not at Tour de France and, yes, you need to fucking stop at red light.

I was really hoping the damn Cambridge cop was there to ticket this guy.

Near the double rotaries by the mystic river on the Medford/Arlington line. Picked it up right off the street, still flashing. If its yours, send me a pic or a url to the exact model to prove its yours and... its yours.

Bike parking at encore?

I'm headed to encore for work tomorrow and it's a nice day out so I'm hoping to be able to bike there! Is there bike parking? I tried looking at some pictures and googling and I really don't see anything. I know there's not much around that area so encore doesn't have anything set up, I'm not sure if there might be?

The removal of protection from existing bike lanes, the removal of bus lanes, the dropping of ongoing projects involving bike and bus infrastructure, the removal of any mention of bikes from neighborhood plans, and focusing on repaving over safety improvements is completely in line with Trump’s transportation agenda.
