Mankind

In Genesis 1:27, mankind is created (ברא) in Gods image-male and female together, blessed and told to replenish the earth.

In Genesis 2:7, a man is formed (וייצר) from the dust of the ground and placed in a Garden that God planted.

Do these two passages describe the same human group, or does the Hebrew vocabulary and narrative context indicate two distinct acts involving different human populations?

I'm interested in how Hebrew grammar, narrative structure, and ancient Near Eastern context inform this question.

it is among the consensus of Academic scholars that Genesis 1 and 2 are 2 separate creation accounts. With Genesis 2 being the older and Genesis 1 being composed likely around the exile.

and to answer your question different human groups as Gen1 is all of mankind at once and Gen2 is just Adam. You probably will get a better answer if you ask this over at r/AcademicBiblical.

The Hebrew word, "adam" can mean Humanity (as a whole), a/any human, and is even used as a personal name (genealogical Adam).

Genesis 1 deals with God (Elohim) creating the whole Human Race in His Image;

Then God said, “Let Us make mankind (Adam) in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the livestock and over all the earth, and over every crawling thing that crawls on the earth.” So God created mankind (Adam) in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. (Genesis 1:26-27)

And everything was "very good" (Genesis 1:31).

Genesis 2 begins to deal with God's Personal relationship with Adam and introduces God's Personal Name "YHWH" Elohim (Genesis 2:4) and God's interaction with an individual person (Adam, or a/any human). And there is no shame in their nakedness (Genesis 2:24-25).

Genesis 3 and 4 deal with the introduction of sin and the curse comes upon the ground (Genesis 3:17) and the curse from the ground comes upon Cain (Genesis 4:11). This is a corruption of God's Image and they are cut off from the Tree of Life. And Seth is born in the "image and likeness" of Adam (Genesis 5:3). And the continuous propagation of corruption from future generations is witnessed to in the remaining chronological progression.
