If you're visiting Belgrade or flying out of the city over the next few weeks, here's a heads-up that could save you from missing your flight.

Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport (BEG) is experiencing severe traffic congestion due to roadworks on the access roads.

According to local media reports on October 9, traffic jams have become so bad that some passengers have reportedly abandoned their cars and continued on foot with their luggage to avoid missing their flights.

The roadworks are causing significant delays, and the usual journey to the airport may take considerably longer than expected.

Here's what you should know:

• Leave much earlier than usual. Don't rely on Google Maps' estimated journey time alone.
• Check traffic conditions before leaving and allow plenty of extra time, especially if you're travelling by taxi or car.
• Check your flight and airport updates on the official Belgrade Airport website before travelling.
• Allow extra time for check-in, baggage drop and security, in addition to the journey itself.

The roadworks were initially expected to continue until October 26, although Air Serbia's passenger advisory says disruptions could last until early November.

If you're arriving in Belgrade, you should also keep the traffic situation in mind when planning your transfer from the airport.
