Slaughter Scores From First in Eighth as Cardinals Beat Red Sox, 4 to 3, for World Series Title, October 15, 1946

ST. LOUIS, Oct. 15. Enos Slaughter ran from first base to home plate on a two-out hit in the eighth inning today, and the St. Louis Cardinals are champions of the world.

His run beat the Boston Red Sox, 4 to 3, in the seventh game of the World Series before 36,143 at Sportsman's Park.

The Cardinals led, 3 to 1, going into the eighth. Rip Russell, batting for Hal Wagner, singled, and George Metkovich, batting for Joe Dobson, doubled him to third. Manager Eddie Dyer took out Murry Dickson and sent in Harry Brecheen, who had pitched all nine innings on Sunday. Brecheen struck out Wally Moses and got Johnny Pesky on a liner to right, but Dom DiMaggio doubled off the right-field wall to score both runners and tie the game. DiMaggio hurt his leg running out the hit, and Leon Culberson went in to run for him and play center field.

Slaughter opened the Cardinal eighth with a single to center off Bob Klinger. Whitey Kurowski popped up a bunt and Del Rice flied to Ted Williams in left. With the count two balls and one strike on Harry Walker, Slaughter went with the pitch. Walker lined it into left-center for a double. Culberson fielded it and threw to Pesky in short left-center. Pesky held the ball a moment, and by the time he threw home, Slaughter was sliding across the plate.

"I hesitated," Pesky said afterward. "I thought he'd hold up at third so late in the game."

Boston put its first two men on in the ninth, Rudy York and Bobby Doerr on singles. Pinky Higgins forced Doerr, Roy Partee fouled out to first, and Tom McBride, batting for Earl Johnson, bounced to Red Schoendienst, who stopped the ball against his arm and flipped to Marty Marion for the force at second.

Brecheen won his third game of the Series, the first left-hander to do it. The Red Sox, who won 104 games in the American League race, scored 20 runs in the seven games. Williams, in his first World Series, had five singles in 25 times at bat.

Cuyler's Double in Eighth Beats Walter Johnson in the Rain, Pirates Win World's Series, 9 to 7, October 15, 1925

PITTSBURGH, Oct. 15. The Pirates are champions of the world. Down three games to one, they came back to take the last three, and this afternoon at Forbes Field, under a drizzle that never let up, they beat the great Walter Johnson, 9 to 7, in the seventh and deciding game.

It did not look like Pittsburgh's day at the start. Washington scored four runs in the first inning, three walks and a pair of wild pitches doing most of the work, and Johnson fanned Cuyler and Barnhart in the home half. The Pirates got three back in the third, but the Senators answered with two more in the fourth on Joe Harris's double, and it stood 6 to 3.

From there the old master began to tire on a soggy mound. Carey and Cuyler doubled for a run in the fifth. In the seventh Carey doubled again and Pie Traynor drove a triple to deep right-center, and the score was tied at six.

Roger Peckinpaugh, the Washington shortstop, put his club ahead with a home run into left field in the eighth. It was a hard afternoon for him all the same. He made two errors today, eight for the Series, and the second of them, on a throw to second base with two out in the eighth, left the bases full for Kiki Cuyler.

Earl Smith and Carson Bigbee had already doubled to tie the game again. Cuyler fouled off four pitches, ran the count to two and two, and then lifted a long fly down the right field line that was ruled a double under the ground rules. Bigbee and Eddie Moore came home, and the Pirates led, 9 to 7.

Red Oldham pitched the ninth and struck out Sam Rice and Goose Goslin before a crowd of 42,856. Johnson went the whole way and was hit for fifteen safeties. Max Carey had four of them, three doubles and a single, and stole a base besides.
