Specific Mechanic Duelist’s Prerogative Struggle

What kind of class or build do you prefer to use this weapon with (other than Wyll assuming you hero him in part as a warlock and use Infernal Rapier)? I was originally thinking monk since you’re not using a shield for that class and only one-handed or versatile weapons, but then I remembered monks using bonus actions for the unarmed strikes, which overlaps with Dueller’s Enthusiasm (and to some extent also Challenge to Duel). Hence the reason for my question, as it’s a good weapon but I just don’t know who or what can make the most use of it.

Edit: to further expand on this I guess, how do you feel about not being able to use an actual shield in order to make the most of using this weapon? Normally my characters either have a shield, dual wield, or use a two handed weapon, so this one puts me in unusual territory.

Specific Mechanic Trader attitude.

I have read here and in the wiki that Charisma does not affect the starting attitude of traders in BG3.

However I've found that playing Wyll (high Charisma) has given me a positive starting attitude with every vendor I have talked to. This is without donating any items.

Is there some other mechanic affecting baseline attitudes of traders? I'm on Xbox with no mods.

I am playing normal difficulty if it helps.

Specific Mechanic How viable are battlemage gloves land druid?

So I was looking at the acuity page and the battlemage gloves suggests flame Blade procs for getting acuity. How does this work exactly? Land druid or druid in general gets flame Blade, is this a viable way to get acuity?

Party Composition Party Support Build for New Players that isn't a Cleric

I'm consulting the BG3Builds megamind for this one. I'm starting a new playthrough with a couple of friends and I'd like to be the best "enabler" that I can be; I'd much prefer to be supporting rather than carrying the team.

For current party composition, we have a Light Cleric, a Wild Magic Sorcerer, and a Giant Barbarian. I'm thinking that our party is lacking ranged physical DPS so I'm currently leaning towards an archer focused building around Bow of the Banshee and being a Great Ass Hunter to afflict the Frightened condition.

Any other good ideas?

Specific Mechanic Freeze & Smash with Cold Snap + Sentinel

Some fun tech that lets you AoE freeze enemies with water and makes you feel like you're playing DOS2 again!

Here's a combat demo.

I was inspired by Build-a-Barbarian Workshop's Tavern Brawler Wizard that used Cold Snap's Chilling Counter, which applies Chilled on miss with no save (despite the tooltip saying DC13!). This naturally pairs well with water to Freeze and bludgeoning damage to exploit and also lets you weaponise RadOrbs proactively.

Since this require procc'ing attacks of opportunity, why not pair it with a Sentinel EK that can use the mechanics of shared initiative Sentinel: Vengeance to make 10 (ish) attacks with vulnerability?

Full disclaimer: I'm using mods in that video but nothing that affects the mechanics shown. Please let me know if I'm wrong about that.

Build Help Dual-wielding Gloomstalker Question

A build question just popped into my head and I’m not near my console to build it out and answer it for myself. Figured I ask here real quick while it’s fresh in my mind.

I’m currently building into Gloomstalker for a Tactician run. The plan is to go with dual-wielding melee instead of archery. My question is this:

Better to multiclass into Rogue Assassin or Thief?

I know Assassin will give me better damage on the first turn, but Thief sounds like it’ll give more consistent damage over the course of longer fights. Tav will be Durge so Deathstalker Mantle is in play.

Specific Mechanic Male Dwarf Off-Hand Attack Glitch also works with Spears and Javelins

It's been known for a while that the Male Dwarf has a glitch when wielding certain weapon sets that allows him to make two off-hand attacks for the price of one, when he starts his attack from outside melee range (1.5m).

This glitch traces to a missing animation for this weapon set:

  • main hand Small1H (Dagger) (the only such weapon)
  • off hand Piercing1H (Shortsword or Rapier)

While perusing game files, I noticed that Dagger+Spear maps to the same stance as Dagger+Shortsword. Extrapolating from there, I found that there is another weapon set that shares the same off-hand attack glitch:

  • main hand Small1H (Dagger)
  • off hand Javelin1H (Javelin or Spear)

You can see all four combinations in this short video: https://youtu.be/aUlYHZz6tu0

The glitch works whether your character is a real Male Dwarf or is Disguised as one (Disguise Self or Seeming).

So: bring on those male dwarf master race builds!

Build Help Green Lantern Build

Ok. Playing on Xbox with mods. 10th or more play through. My playthrough always end up themed. The first was a straight playthrough. Second was DC comics themed with a Batman Tav then another playthrough with a Superman Paladin Tav(the only one I’ve finished). Next, I switched to Marvel with a Spider-Man Tav, then when Custom Companions Lite became available I did a full bore combo of DC and Marvel but the one guy I always failed at was Green Lantern. I tried to push Wyll in that direction, then Gale, but there aren’t enough defensive spells to make them viable in battle. Recently, with the release of the Astralborn mid(which is super OP, but I’ve already done Honour Mode and I’m just looking to have fun) I started again with 40 level cap, choose your own stats up to 30 mod, No Party Limit, More Enemies, Tougher enemies, etc. etc. I’m creating Tavs for the Justice League and self limiting my party to 7. Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and to an extent Flash all seem pretty easy, especially when Superman is Astralborn, but Green Lantern is impossible. I started with Pact of the Blade Warlock into Sorceror, but at level 12 he was still weak as hell. Respec-ed to 5 levels of Eldritch Knight Fighter before switching to Sorceror but it still wasn’t much fun playing. The most important things in my opinion are Flight, some sort of Shield, and some sort of energy blast. Does anyone have a recommendation for a build or a console mod that they feel I can achieve this with?

Build Help Party Composition Question

I have beaten honor mode a couple of times, and I started another honor run with someone who is pretty new to the game coupled with a friend that isn't very good. I decided to pick a life cleric to ensure that they can have fun and we can get through without much issue. The only problem with this is they picked giant barb and abjuration wizard. These choices somewhat make the healer gear I wear kind of pointless. My question is should I keep to the life cleric or swap to a light cleric and just go full reverb to carry them or does it even matter at all?

External Mods Silly BG3 Character Generator I made for my girlfriend and me

I recently got back into Baldur's Gate 3 with my girlfriend, and we always liked using this generator, but we noticed that it is not up to date with Patch 8, so I decided to work on my own generator with that in mind :)

https://thefallz.github.io/BG3CharacterGenerator/

I'd love feedback from anyone who wants to try it out and even suggestions on what to add!

I'm currently doing a College of Valor Human Bard, and my girlfriend is a Pact of the Chain Drow Warlock!

Build Review Gloomstalker Assassin

First time with this build on honor mode.

5 Gloomstalker / 3 Assassin so far. Took out every single mob in the shambling mound fight in the first turn, making the fight almost trivial.

This class is nuts. Consistently doing 70-100 damage per turn.

Build Help Sorc Paladin Cleric Multiclass

thoughts on Resist Durge Paladin Cleric of Helm?

Looking for validation of my playthrough headcannon:

|| Basically since Withers is helping the party at the order of Helm since he is at fault for giving the Dead Three his power... ||

|| why couldn't Durge be also held accountable for his part in the events and tasked as "chosen of Helm" to fix the mess? ||

I'll send build details bellow and I'm open to suggestions

Start as Sorcerer (Draconic mostly because I like the scales and Const Proficiency, and works as nod to Dragonborn Durge). I like fire so would take gold ancestry, choose half wood elf for mov speed (and looks) and use disguise self when i want to look like a dragonborn.

2 levels into paladin for Divine Smite and Fighting Style

8 levels into War Domain Cleric, for bonus action attack and Divine Strike

last level either Sorcerer for Extended Metamagic (would use on Haste spell from act 2 bow) or Paladin for a little more HP and advantage on attacks with bonus action.

Starting stats would be:
16 Str 14 Dex 14 Con
8 Int 12 Wis 12 Charisma

Since most spellslots for attacking will be used on divine smite Cha and Wis will mostly be used for casting utility spells.

Feats great weapon master and maybe savage attack if it improves all smite dice damage

Thoughts?

Specific Mechanic The Pack Mule: highest carrying capacity possible

this is a basic, silly and nearly useless build. but it was fun to put together

if you drink an elixir of cloud giant strength and have the entire party wear devilfoil masks, you will have a strength score of 30. the highest possible score in the game.

at least 6 levels into wildheart barbarian grants aspect of the bear, doubling your carrying capacity

one would think it were wise to take human for an additional 1.25 modifier, but multiple sources of increases to your carrying capacity do not stack, except in the case of human and giant barbarians specifically.

this brings us to a carrying capacity of 680 kilograms, or 1300 pounds (i might be off by a little im too lazy to double check my math). its honestly kind of underwhelming as a maximum if im being honest

EDIT: its extremely situational, but whenever you're in the astral plane the modifier granted by aspect of the bear increases to 3x. im gonna move the goalpost a little and say everything else is the highest carrying capacity that is reliable to use, but there is still that one area where it gets better

EDIT 2: apparently the devilfoil masks do not stack with the cloud giant elixir, so theres not really a reliable way to get more than a 27

Build Help Is there a modern community resource for spells?

There's a lot of attention paid to classes and equipment in this subreddit, naturally, but I feel like spells sort of went under my radar.

I know which ones are generally good, but there's a bunch of community sentiment over time I've noticed that I imagine has been informed by a lot of non-forefront discussion; things like hex being terrible, fear being fantastic, ice storm being incredible, that while I can see the logic behind I don't have a fully comprehensive grasp of every bit of tech or reasoning.

I was wondering if there is some kind of community spell resource, or a good recount of spells that have tech/pitfalls that wouldn't be immediately clear when selecting them?

Like, I know I'm missing something crazy with flame blade from just the amount of discussion I've seen on it, but I've struggled to find a resource on it, and would appreciate it if there's some kind of master list of these niche finds that isn't the wiki or tier slop

Cheers.

Announcement Seeking new moderation

I made the sub 6 years ago in order to give a place for mechanics related discussions and not just memes and screenshots of people's Tavs. Unfortunately, I was extremely underwhelmed by this game's balance, and as a result, have not been too enthusiastic about this sub or a couple years. But I continued to moderate it because I wanted a place where both experience knowledgeable veterans as well as noobs could post and share and ask questions and get advice. However I am going to have severely diminished access to Reddit to continue to moderate for the next month, and with that I think it's finally time for a change.

I am not searching for persons just wanting to moderate for now. I am searching for persons interested in taking over moderation permanently and I will step down. If you want to apply, shoot me a modmail.

Build Help Thematic builds that are also strong

Hi all,

So I've had restartitis with BG3 since release, and Ive never got past act 1. Main issue really is build indecision (especially for the MC) and being unsatisfied with what I went with. The added patch 8 subclasses are near but add to the indecision.

The basic gist is that I want builds which are genuinely good, fits the character lore, and where characters aren't doubling up on their classes mostly. Ideally ones that come online early-ish, and don't only get good at the end game. So no Paladin Astarion or Barbarian Gale or making Shadowheart worship Tyr.

MC is the hardest. I don't want to be gith, half ork, drow, dragonkin, or any of the shorties. I'm intending on being a good character going with durge so i don't feel like I'm missing out on content. Normally I would always pick a charisma based class, but none of them feel right. Paladin? The oath breaking is so insanely annoying, and it really doesn't make sense for the durge backstory. Warlock? I don't want to double up with Wyll, and I feel having a patron doesnt work well for a durge backstory. Bard? I know college of swords bard is strong, but I don't vibe with the class fantasy at all and couldn't get into playing one. Sorceror? Maybe, but I prefer to have MC as a martial character since I like to just do regular hits on enemies a lot of the time so i don't need to do continual rests after fights. I've considered monk since wisdom has some handy skill checks too but it seems like it wouldn't fit story wise with durge, and the evil flashback scenes have durge going around with a knife.

I know I'm overthinking it instead of just playing. But what would you recommend for each party member and the MC? I'm happy to gish if there's a good way to martial with sorc that doesnt involve me needing to take Paladin oaths.

In-Game Mods Semi-thematic party builds help

I've finished the game on tactician and honour once and now starting my first modded honour run. Using Ancient Mega Pack, Fade's AIO and Oath of Conquest subclass. Looking for help with my party composition.

On my OG run I've played wyll sorlock, laezel BM, Astarion Gloomstalker Assassin and Karlach Wildheart. Then played an evil durge bladesinger, minthara paladin, shart DJ cleric and ascended Astarion ranged swords bard.

Now I'm looking to try something new (hence the mods) and my mc will be conquest hexadin durge (s+b/2h), still debating if I go 11/1 or 9/3. Then for companions I want to try and to be somewhat thematic. So I'm thinking Shart 9/2/1 cleric/stars druid/storm sorc. Still deciding between tempest or light domain. I want to eventually have Jaheira as a DW ranger, maybe beastmaster. Either way she's only at the end of act 2. I think I should have a ranged martial and maybe another caster?

I'm looking for fun, not necessarily OP builds, and not item dependant builds since it's a modded run and thus items are much less reliable (not mentioning that many new items are added)

Looking forward to reading your ideas!

Party Composition Starting a New Save - Choose my Party Comp!

Like the title says, I’m starting a new save but I don’t want to choose what to play. I have almost 400 hours in the game but have yet to even make it to Moonrise. Give me a charisma based build for my Tav and builds for the following companions: Wyll, Lae’zel, and Shadowheart.

Looking for a good party comp for me to enjoy doing my first full playthrough.

TIA!

Build Help Hexblade / Lockadin Spell Slots

Hi, I really want to make a Hexblade Lock / Paladin build that utilises the Shadow Blade as well as the pact weapon so that damage scales with Charisma. From what I understand, to get the most out of Shadow Blade you want to have a level 5 (or 6) spell slot so that you can upcast it and it will be stronger, however I'm a little confused as to how many spell slots the paladin/ warlock mix would get.

Would anybody be able to advise a path to getting a level 5 spellslot with a hexblade lock / paladin, and how many attacks per turn I would have available? I'm only playing on balanced and don't care about a wizard dip for scrolls, etc.

Build Help Fun melee martial class that’s very mobile?

I’m looking to round-out my party with a mobile martial class that can quickly get around the battle and smash puny archers and spell casters with a massive greatsword.

I tried a throwing Giant Barbarian and whilst it was extremely strong, it was also extremely boring. It had very few abilities and I found that throwing the Nyrulna trident did so much damage that it was almost always the best choice so I just threw it over and over.

I also tried a simple battlemaster and was a bit underwhelmed by the superiority dice. Most of them seemed to have an extremely high chance of being resisted so I ended-up using the same 1 always. Maybe I was missing a key trick/item though so not against going back to it if there is something that makes it more fun.

A class that has a bit of tactical flexibility would be ideal but it must be decently durable and must be quite mobile as the middle of the battlefield is usually an AoE nightmare due to my casters.
