Humour Thoughts on the MCEU's Avengers (2017)?

Post image

With James Gunn's recent revamp of the Marvel universe following Hulk (2025) and with the sequel coming up soon, I rewatched Avengers (2017) and honestly not as bad as I remember. I obviously still prefer Zack Snyder's Avengers (2021) with the grey Hulk and Thanos as the actual villain, but idk I think Joss Whedon's 2017 movie isn't as bad as people remember and, whilst I hope Beast is an actual X-Men member in the new continuity as he should have always been imo, I honestly don't mind the team roster either. What do you guys think?

Please remember that this is r/Avengers and as such, it's for the Avengers comics and movies specifically. This is not a subreddit for general Marvel Cinematic Universe posts or anything like that. You may be looking for subreddits like r/MarvelStudios instead.

I feel like it had a decent recovery of Iron Man VS Captain America: Dawn of Liberty, but still "Steve, don't" by Gal Gadot's Black Widow will forever be memed

and don't even get me started on the scene where they stop fighting just because the cap mom in this universe has the same name as tony's mom lol

It wasn't terrible, but the threat of Captain America actually just being Red Skull taking over his body made it bittersweet, even if the supposed sequels were going to properly bring Steve back.

Weird lineup you went for here. I've seen your explanation, but it seems to lean more towards their place as Marvel characters and their character traits rather than their status as Avengers, despite how you opened it. The main team would still have Iron Man, Cap and Thor, just as Josstice League has the Trinity. Barry and Aquaman's places would probably be filled by Hawkeye and Wasp respectively.

The one mostly up in the air is Cyborg, I'd probably go for Rogue or perhaps one of the New Warriors.

It was... Ok? I mean, It was weird to pick stature and deathlock to the avengers but it was ok my only problem is that ironman feels fat in the movie

In the same way Snyder pulled Cyborg from the Teen Titans onto his Justice League, I had the idea that he'd pull Beast from the X-Men as the equivalent... particularly given Beast was a weirdly prominent Avengers member in the 70s

So Thor is Superman, Wasp is Wonder Woman, Hulk is Aquaman, Black Panther is Batman, Spider-man is Flash and Beast is Cyborg?

Interesting not what I do but interesting. I certainly not including Beast lmao.

My thinking was less about power sets and more what each hero represents within the team:

  • Hulk is Superman (THE most iconic, classic hero of his respective universe, you can see why he was down a grittier route but ultimately is best when he's brighter and more comic-accurate)
  • Spider-Man is Batman (the MVP fan-favourite hero who normally assumes their own solo stories as a younger loner, but is roped into this team as a rare older, more experienced version of the character)
  • Thor is Wonder Woman (the obvious third place candidate in their respective team, with semi-immortality and clear links to mythology)
  • The Wasp is The Flash (the often overlooked but incredibly overpowered member of the team, with a comic history that is often misattributed or done poorly on film but deserves their moment in the spotlight)
  • Black Panther is Aquaman (the king of a hidden nation who comes out of hiding to join the team as a wildcard but brilliant tactician, both coincidentally with a 2018 solo movie)
  • Beast is Cyborg (as previously mentioned, normally attributed to a different team but has a history with this one, bringing in a fresh perspective on the team dynamic)

Ah interesting but I don't think the mechanics of why Cyborg was added applies to motivate them to add Beast.

Cyborg got added cause they wanted a Black Guy but were not going to use GL.

To me picking Beast is more cause you want someone who doesn't look like a supermodel visually.

Eh yeah that's true I suppose, I guess I was just searching for an X-Man with strong Avengers ties that fit a similar bill of not being too powerful but slotting in nicely... especially given Snyder had no plans for the Teen Titans IRL, it makes sense he'd use one of those characters on this team. I see where you're coming from though

Except Cyborg has been A Justice Leaguer before..

And Beast has been an Avenger. That was OPs point. Both characters from other teams that have been in the Justice League or Avengers but not necessarily everyone's first thought when thinking about the team.

Not only that, Beast has more issues as an Avenger than Cyborg as a Justice League member and a history with the team going back 50 years
