Joe Espada will meet with the Mariners about their vacant managerial position, per @Feinsand

It makes sense. I think its all but confirmed that Espada is gone with a new GM eventually coming in, they will want to set up their own staff. Reports were pretty mixed on if it was confirmed Espada was gone, or it wasnt confirmed, or Espada was let go but still rode it out, or whatever.

Wonder if they'll keep Lopez, or if they really will clean house

u/ByrntOrange Altuve's foot 1d ago
We should clean house.

u/htownAstrofan 1d ago
Defenitely. I want to get far away from the “player manager” type. Joe was a nice guy but had issues holding guys accountable.
2
u/cantsay Otter 1d ago
I'd consider player/manager Carlos Correa.

u/tomiathon 1d ago
The Player/manager Alex Bregman alternate timeline probably would have slapped. Though I guess just about anything would have slapped compared to the Joe Espada timeline.

Accountable for what?
5
u/Logical_Scallion3543 1d ago
Crossing up their catchers on purpose for starters

u/Crimsic 1d ago
What did he do or not do about that? I don't think Baker or Hinch would have handled that differently to the press. I'll never know what was discussed internally though.
-6
u/Logical_Scallion3543 1d ago
That wouldn’t have happened to begin with under either of those managers for a start
2
u/htownAstrofan 1d ago
Poor performance. Plus there is clearly something wrong with the training staff and how guys practice, with all the injuries. I just sense Joe isnt the most assertive guy when it comes to addressing issues

u/bordomsdeadly Houston Buffalos 1d ago
Eventually maybe. But by the time a new GM is hired, the top picks will be gone by teams with more stable front offices.
I would preferably like to retain what we can and / or offer 1 year contracts to allow the GM freedom next season and not be handcuffed to a shirt cycle this season.
I guess it really just depends how long it takes us to find the right GM

Bummer I really like Espada as a man. I think hes a good baseball mind too. I know the results werent there but I liked him. Wish he was out guy.
38
u/Ok-Rest-8066 1d ago
Half of it wasn’t even his fault. All those injuries? I think he did alright
10
u/MF_D00MSDAY 1d ago
I think he’s done a mostly decent job the past few years until this post season. I’ve been an espada defender this whole time but the decisions being made in the series plus the end result unfortunately was a death sentence for him after the GM being canned earlier this season.
It’s tough to manage your team into a win, it’s very easy to manage your team out of one
15
u/Lukealloneword Houston Astros 1d ago
Yeah but its a results driven league. Unfortunately if you dont do it you get canned. I wanted him to stay but here it's an unpopular opinion. People need someone to blame and Houston fans love to blame manager and offensive coordinators. It is what it is these days.

u/unlikedemon Nolan Ryan 1d ago
Me too. If Boone can be on a team for 9 years with some high payroll, I think Espada could do well in years 4-6. Brown was 50/50 with his signings and Bagwell and Crsne just get involved way too much.
3
u/willydillydoo Houston Astros 1d ago
To be fair the offensive coordinator of the Texans is dog shit, that one is warranted.
0
u/Lukealloneword Houston Astros 1d ago
I think we just put too much on him. If theres problems it might just be the players. Im no football genius so I could be wrong ive just never seen OCs get this kind of blame before in the history of the sport. But like I said idk everything.
1
u/MF_D00MSDAY 17h ago
Except he often runs the same plays in the same situations that never work out, he can’t learn or adapt as the game goes on or even week to week which is way worse. It would be one thing if he was trying different things or shaking things up, but he’s basically banging his head against the wall every week. Having a shitty o-line doesn’t help either.

u/Ok-Rest-8066 1d ago
Yeah, plus Houston fans or spoiled babies now that settle no less than a championship
9
u/Lukealloneword Houston Astros 1d ago
We certainly got spoiled.

u/Ok-Rest-8066 1d ago
I’m personally content with just winning the division and beating the Yankees/dodgers. I’ve lived through dark ages and had fun then, I can have fun now lol

u/Packtex60 1d ago
With the roster he had to work with he did just fine. Josh Miller needs to be gone yesterday

u/Prayray Robert Ford 1d ago
I think Crane doesn’t plan on hiring a manager or GM prior to the lockout…he doesn’t see the point of paying them if there is no season. Basically the same thing Moreno was doing in Anaheim.
However, I have a feeling he’ll know who he wants to hire for GM before the lockout ends…and they’ll likely know who they’ll be hiring as manager before the lockout ends. Along with that, the manager will likely build a staff that will be hired immediately as well.
This doesn’t mean Espada is gone (although, I’m pretty sure he’s gone), just means Crane is in a holding pattern until we get back from the lockout.

u/HumanRuse 1d ago
I think you've got to move forward like there will be a season next year unless ALL owners are going to be in a holding pattern for hiring GMs and Managers. Otherwise your choices are going to be limited in terms of candidates considered to be top talents.

He probably made seven figures a season with the Astros so hopefully he’s socked some away to take care of said family.

So is he officially gone ? Or we still waiting for GM first ?
2
u/BMinsker Houston Astros 1d ago
Not clear. McTaggart's byline is on the mlb.com article, so the meeting part seems solid. Could be he knows he's out and looking. Could be he hasn't heard one way or the other and is just shopping around before decent options get taken.

So he either does incredibly well and we hate our front office more or he does shitty with them and we point and laugh. It's gonna be hilarious either way

Why? He seems like Espada 2.0. And winning the two week-long WBC with a team of the best of the best isn’t reflective of an MLB roster or season.
Edit: spelling

u/Capsized777 1d ago
Why do people feel this way?! They never cleaned house after Dusty and it’s time for them to do just that. It’s going to be business as usual with Omar.

u/AppointmentVisible21 Jose Altuve 1d ago
Lmao, what? No way he does this. Business is business I guess though.

I wonder at what point Espada says the lack of decision gets to be a deal killer for him because of the limbo he seems to be in. So to me it is either that or he does know that he is gone and not public
2
u/HumanRuse 1d ago
I think there are a lot of uncertanties in terms of the Astros and baseball as a whole. And I just can't imagine that IF Crane actually offered Espada another contract it would be longer than 1 year (or a very maybe 2 years). So if you've got a team reaching out to you and you get hired, there is a better shot of getting a 2-3 year deal locked down.
1
u/prgtexas921 1d ago
Agree with that as being a reality. I have to think that they need a GM in place before winter meetings which may be the last get together before shut down
16
u/trboi24 Houston Astros 1d ago
We might actually start beating the Mariners now

Only if Espada takes King and Sousa with him

Sousa for sure. I’m not sure he’s prepared for actual boo’ing next season.

I'm pretty sure that Crane would have to give Espada permission to do this since he is still under contract. So, it's safe to assume that they've already had a talk about his future.
And let's face it, any extension would probably be a 1 year deal. Espada I'm sure would like to lock down something more.

u/coolgui Houston Astros 1d ago
I think his contract was up as soon as the Astros were eliminated.
My mistake. Just looked it up, it goes through the end of October. But Crane granted permission to interview.
2
u/HumanRuse 1d ago
Not positive but I think it expires once the WS ends. I even read a headline from Chandler yesterday (here I think) stating that he was still under contract for a few weeks.

Honestly can’t be worse than Dan Wilson. Let’s not forget he’s the same guy who opted to put in Bazardo instead of a fully rested Muñoz against Springer with RISP (u already know the rest)

If he gets it then I am happy for him.
And personally, I have never really had a problem with the Mariners.
When we were still in the NL, they always were one of my favorite AL teams. I even saw a random game in Seattle in the mid-90s in the old Kingdome, got to see Jr. knock out 2 homers in that game.
Now that we are in the same division as them, I still don’t really have a problem with them. Yes, some of their fans are mean, etc. but they are still the only team that has not made it to the Series and I would like to see that.
Now bring on the downvotes!

Omar Lopez

See I agree with this and it’s also how I felt three years ago with Espada so I’m conflicted
But Lopez seems like a great choice0

Absolutely not. They need to clean house obviously the culture is fucking shot.

There's really nothing better the Astros could do to hurt the Mariners than give them Espada. They should offer to throw in a million or two if they take him.
