Shitpost This Bizarre Reuters Article Comparing Assyrians to ISIS

Yes, ancient Assyrians were brutal. But the framing of this 2015 article really pissed me off, particularly this part:

I also watched recent video of ISIS members in a museum smashing (alleged) archaeological relics from the very ancient Mesopotamian past. I felt a certain sense of historical irony while doing so. I wondered as I watched them use sledgehammers and power drills on a 3,000 year old Assyrian statue if they realized that they were following the ancient Assyrian playbook as they tried to erase the region’s past.

So this Reuters writer compares ISIS to the ancient Assyrians, yet never really addresses the much more immediate Islamic influences and especially the ways of Muhammad?

What makes it even more insensitive is the timing. ISIS was literally persecuting, kidnapping and killing Assyrians at the time, yet this article invokes their ancient ancestors to illustrate brutality without even acknowledging the modern Assyrian community or what it was going through. The framing just feels incredibly tone-deaf.

I know this is old news, but I only came across it recently and it really got to me. Sorry!

Shitpost A little satire with a little dark humour - but in all honesty, what is David Rueil doing in this picture?

Mar Benyamin XIX Shimun would definitely have an issue with this. He tried the truce route and that got him murdered, mutilated, hung, and his 100+ cavalry protection unit met with a similar fate. You can’t trust these people as history has shown time and time again.

For those who will say this is an attack on the church, no, it’s NOT an attack on the church, it’s criticising this individual in this picture though.

Shitpost I had a vision that the Assyrians were closely linked with the ancient Dacians of Transylvania and I'm curious if anyone could confirm or deny? The Sphinx below is rumored to be the grave stele of King Decebal, last King of the Dacians, 106 AD.

Hello - I'm researching my own ancestry and thought the possible link between the Dacians and Assyrians was interesting enough to see if anyone might know their history.

Thank you.

Shitpost Ignorance at a new level. This weird Arab is convinced that all Mesopotamians and Phoenicians spoke Arabic. Oh, he blames the West for us "accepting" that ancient languages like Assyrian, Babylonian, Phoenician, etc exist. Lmao.

Shitpost If Assyria we're a thing, would the Kurds living there have the right to learn and study in Kurdish and practice their religions?

Also would they have the same kinds of rights and opportunities as ethnic Assyrians?

Would there be anti-discrimination law since they are an ethnic minority?

Shitpost A strange ancient Assyrian hate page created by Kurds, calling Assyrians "Nomadic Slave Drivers" and how Kurds finally wiped the Assyrians out (WTF?)

https://www.saradistribution.com/assyrian-torturers.htm

The page is in both English and Turkish. I assumed it's made by Turkish Kurds. Yes, ancient Assyrians were brutal. But why does this page make it seem like Assyrians were killing Kurds from ancient history and how they defeated once and for all? Yet it also says we're racist Christian fundamentalists stealing Kurdish lands today.

Btw, I thank the page for connecting us with our ancient ancestors. Our haters don't do that. 🤣

Shitpost Serious question regarding Chaldean vs Assyrian name today

Hey everyone, I'm going into this with an open mind and would love some good discussion.

I’m aware of the Schism of 1552. I don’t need a history lesson. But it’s been close to 500 years since we were “all Assyrian”... shouldn’t we be classified as 2 distinct cultures at this point in time?

Sure we share a common history, but this phenomenon is called cultural divergence, it happens all the time.

North and South Korea, Czech Republic and Slovakia, Serbia and Croatia, East and West Germany prior to 1990. Not to mention all of the Native American / African Tribes that have split and gone separate ways.

Yes we share a common heritage, but enough time has passed to where we have different historical experiences, language differentiation, religious affiliations and cultural traditions.

With this being said, why do Assyrians want Chaldeans to call themselves something they haven’t been called for 500 years? The examples I mentioned recognize that they are currently different and distinct.

Thanks!
