As our rules state, this is not the subreddit for political debate. There are plenty of spicy subs to scratch your political debate itch. This is not one of them and violations of this rule will result in a permaban.

Tearing up by kindness shown

Hello my favorite women on the internet -

Does this ever happen to you, too, or am I unique in this?

When I’m vulnerable and in need of help, and have to reach out to a stranger, I find myself in tears when that person shows kindness by helping me. I get a huge lump in my throat and can barely speak because I’ll start bawling. It’s like my heart swells with appreciation but I’m also embarrassed by the show of emotion. Can anyone else relate?

And for context, today it was a simple repair on my car brake pedal that I’d watched YouTube videos on, but couldn’t manage to get it done myself. In desperation I went to a garage with the part and explained to the gentleman what I needed. He said sure, I can do that. Took all of 10 minutes! But when he refused any payment (I stupidly didn’t have cash on me but offered my card or Zelle) I was so overcome with gratitude and relief I started to cry. He kind of looked at me, puzzled, and as I said, I was embarrassed.

This was by no means the 1st time this has happened.

TLDR; Does the kindness of strangers ever make you want to cry like a baby?

Would love anyone else to chime in on this, because it makes me wonder.

Holy cow everyone I know is having a crisis at the same time. WTF

Okay so sorry but this is a rant because everyone else is in their own crisis and I don't have anyone sane to talk about it. I'm very thankful for you all!!

Tomorrow my elderly father with dementia takes his long awaited driving test. Hopefully his license is taken away permanently because he should not be able to drive, BUT I'm taking him there and I'm afraid he'll get violent. Wish me luck. I'm going to be a taxi driver from now on, but it's better than his driving.

Next, my son's finding out if he's laid off tomorrow. Wish him luck. He's in debt and has medical bills too. Plus a house. It's not looking good.

Next, my ex called me tonight and his son assaulted him again so he's making another police report and crying. He's supposed to visit me tomorrow evening (we've been friends since I was 15, just never should have married) and I'm not sure if I can put up with the drama *again*. Wish me luck.

Next, my old college roommate has a major sister/nephew/mother in law drama of her own and needed a friend to talk to tonight and I think I said the absolute wrong thing. UGH. I meant well but had a boneheaded moment. I corrected myself but ugh.

Next I've got contractors doing work on my house and I can't stand another moment of their pounding and music and yelling. I'm lucky to have the work getting done but it's A LOT. No privacy, no quiet place to think, always needing something or asking me something. So I'm stressed out every day and just cocoon at night to recharge.

But then everyone called me tonight and I. JUST. CAN'T. I'm prowling around the house and I'm in a panic mood. I'll never get to sleep.

Then there's so many existential crisis already (I live in the USA) that today was my tipping point. I'm toast. Stick a fork in me, I'm done with reality!!

(Edited for a typo)

Indian Corn and Dried Flowers

It occurred to me today that these Fall mainstays of the 1970s are...gone. I remember everyone on our block had a bunch of colorful Indian Corn on their doors, and most moms had a bunch of dried flowers that appeared every Fall - usually dried marigolds, cattails, etc. I haven't seen them in years.

Note: I realize in the 90s everyone had those colorful flags for every season/holiday and now its wreaths

So, ladies, where did these things go? Do any of you still have them?

My Favourite TV series - what are yours?

I posted a few days ago about what I like to do in retirement, one of which was to watch excellent tv series (and movies). Someone asked me what I like to watch - here’s a list off the top of my head:

Pluribus
Silo
For All Mankind
All Creatures Great And Small (newest version but I’d watch the original if I had the app, BritBox I think)
Poldark
Fargo tv series season one and two (I didn’t like season 3 so didn’t watch further).
Game of Thrones
Homeland
The Night Manager
The Expanse
Count of Monte Cristo (the version with Jeremy Irons - amazing!)
Downton Abbey
Mare of Easttown
Broadchurch (English version)
True Detective
The Queen’s Gambit

Please post your favourites!

Edited to add: So many excellent recommendations! I have a lot of tv to watch šŸ˜†

Missing my parents

It's been over 25 years since my dad died. My mom died 2 years ago.

I'm just missing them so much lately.

I wish I had one more day to sit and talk to them, tell them again that I love them.

They were good parents, good people. Not perfect but we were loved, fed and safe.

They did a good job. I hope they were happy, somewhat satisfied with their lives.

All the tests, why am I in pain?

I've been to my PCP who refuses to believe this is menopause related. I have a huge list of autoimmune issues - most significant is UC. I've had X-rays, labs, thyroid ultrasound, liver ultrasound, all come back as normal.

Shoulder/neck pain that makes me cry at night.

I work and by the time I get home, it feels like my head is about to snap off my neck. I keep pushing through. Neck snaps and pops. Pain is brutal.

Got an appt with my gynocologist tomorrow to discuss menopause and HRT.

The pain is excruciating and everyone sees me smiling and happy and nobody thinks it's real. I guess I'm good at faking it.

I'll take any advice you can offer as a newly-menopausal gal.

Starting caretaking journey

I could use a book recommendation. My widowed mother is in her early 80s and keeps me at arms distance, I think because of political and religious differences. My siblings are estranged from her and no help at all. She's had a couple of hospitalizations, and it's clear that she shouldn't be living alone. I know nothing about elder care and need to educate myself fast. Any advice is appreciated.

Gift for retirement

This awesome community of women is the best place for answers and I hope you all can help. My best friend and coworker is retiring. I just got promoted to be her boss a month ago. We were going to retire together but I ended up staying to help train new hires. Even so, she’s my best friend and colleague of 11 years. She is refusing a company retirement party. She doesn’t want any attention. But she’s been here for 19 years, is beyond amazing. I want to honor her while respecting her wishes. She loves dogs, is creative (she is our lead designer) and will travel in an RV with her husband to national parks and the like when she retires Oct 31. Please help me send her off in style. Cost not a factor. She’ll stay my friend forever but I want her to feel valued and seen as she leaves and a plaque isn’t enough. Help!!

Does your family have an old holiday punch tradition? Allrecipes writer looking for families to interview

Hi! I’m Olay a freelance writer and Allrecipes contributor working on a story about old-fashioned holiday punches families continue making year after year.

I’m looking to interview people with any of these stories:

  • A holiday punch recipe passed down through generations
  • A special punch bowl, recipe card, or church/community cookbook connected to the tradition
  • Someone tried to change or ā€œupgradeā€ the punch and the family wanted the old version back
  • The recipe changed over generations, and the new version became part of the tradition

Think sherbet punch, ginger ale, 7-Up/Sprite, fruit punch, frozen juice concentrates, etc.

If this sounds like your family, please comment or DM me! Interviews are about 20 minutes by phone/Zoom. Deadline: Oct. 20.

Thank you!

Is anyone experiencing adult children who have gone no contact?

I have two adult daughters ages 36 and 34. My youngest daughter went no contact about a year and a half ago, in what seemed to me as out of the blue. My oldest daughter is now low contact. She was silent for months—didn’t respond to text or calls—but then sent me a text apologizing and saying she loves me. But she is still ignoring me. I don’t push it, but I let her know I love her and I’m sorry for what she is going through.

Here’s where I struggle. From my perspective, it was us against the world. My youngest accused me of liking my older daughter better and favoring her, but I explained many times that is simply not true. I tried, as best I could, to be fair. No doubt I made mistakes raising them, but how can we ever move forward? Will I ever see them again? I’m heartbroken. How can we ever fix this relationship by avoiding it? I love them both and miss them so much. How do I move forward in my life without them? I will go to therapy with or without them, but I really need help understanding how no contact is beneficial when it is so hurtful.

HRT update

Hi everyone. I posted a few months ago about starting HRT almost 10 years after menopause and a few people asked me to post an update.

I’m 63 and have been taking progesterone and .05 estrogen patch for 3 months. The first couple of weeks, I felt some abdominal cramps. It felt similar to menstrual cramps when I was having my period but they went away and have not returned. The one benefit I’ve noticed is I’m sleeping better, but honestly that’s it.

After reading about so many women who call these drugs amazing and life-changing I was hoping for more. I still have joint pain and some memory fog and my mood hasn’t changed. My mood is pretty stable generally but I think I was expecting an uplift. One weird thing is I’m losing hair. I had a follow up appointment with my doctor and told her this and she said that was unusual because most women say their hair gets fuller.

Anyway, that’s the update. I’m going to give it until the end of the year, but if I don’t start feeling benefits, I’ll probably give it up. Would love to hear other experiences!

Sick of niece’s lazy parenting

I am (64f) probably going to delete this post. because I don’t know if anyone in my family will recognize themselves, but I am really angry at the moment and need to get this off my chest. My parents are both 84, and in fairly good health for their age. But they’re starting to show some signs of decline, which is normal. Particularly my mother and her blood pressure. To say I’m worried is an understatement

But that’s not the real problem. My younger sister has a daughter who is 34. For the past 12 years, my niece has been living with an effing grifter who works minimum wage jobs and basically depends on my parents to support them. (I have so many more rants about that situation, but that would have to be a whole other post 🤬) Which they do - support them almost 100%. My niece does not work because she has 5 1/2-year-old twins, one of who is autistic. My parents adore their great grandchildren, and I know those kids have brought a lot of joy to their life. And because they want the kids to have a somewhat decent life, they are providing a home for my niece and her grifter to live in so the kids have a home, (otherwise, they would be homeless) my mother gives her $2000 a month to help pay her bills on, they pay her phone bill, her insurance, the propane to heat the house. My niece and her grifter pay zero rent. My parents even paid for the cars they drive. The grifter works a minimum wage job and pays for his pot, his gas, and his own phone bill.

But that’s just the background. The twins started kindergarten this fall. And they are not potty trained. Yes, you read that right – they going to be six years old in the spring and are still not potty trained. Because the house they live in is just a stone’s throw away from my parents, my 84-year-old parents have become their free babysitters as well. My niece uses my parents when she wants to have a ā€œdate night,ā€ or whenever she has a crisis or just needs to grocery shop– and do you know who has to clean these kids dirty diapers? Yup, my 84-year-old parents.

Apparently, the schools are trying to work with the kids, because obviously they don’t need children who are not potty trained that they have to clean up after, but there’s no follow-through at home, so the kids are not really learning much of anything. I do understand that my great nephew is autistic and it’s going to take him longer, but the little girl is just fine and she should’ve been trained three years ago. And my nieces take home all this? She says the kids will give her a sign when they are ready to be potty trained. You don’t think being almost six years old and in kindergarten isn’t a fucking sign??? 🤬🤬🤬

My mother doesn’t say anything to my niece because she wants to ā€œkeep the peaceā€ and my sister is a narcissistic ass who has enabled my niece her entire life, and and who throws her hands up in the air and says, ā€œwhat can you do?ā€ when anyone asks her why doesn’t she say or do something. My sister is very tight with her money, so as long as my parents are paying for everything, she’s perfectly fine with the status quo. The kids are in school all week long, and the little boy has to go to a special school for Autism in the afternoons, which is why my niece doesn’t have a job, because she has to take the kids to school in the morning and then pick him up at noon and take him to the afternoon school and then pick them all up and later in the afternoon. And again, I get that, I don’t wanna see the little boy not get the help that he needs because life with my niece and her grifter is going to be difficult enough.

But my mother is worn down. Her blood pressure is up. She’s starting to show some issues that have me concerned, and the only person who seems to be worried is me. My dad would stand up to them, but he’s so worn down by my mom’s refusal to make waves that he just gives up and let her do whatever she wants. Not to mention he is worn out taking care of his property and home. So while these kids are in school every week, my parents are now watching them every weekend because ā€œmy niece needs her rest.ā€ I am livid.

Did I mention this grifter ran up $35,000 in legal bills filing for custody of a 14 year old daughter with his ex-wife (oh yeah, he just got divorced this spring - he’s been married to someone else. during the entire 13 years he has been living off my parents), finding out in court that he’s not even the biological father of this girl, and he went for sole custody just to get even with the ex- wife, and he GOT it??? We still can’t figure that one out. So yeah, now my niece and the grifter have a 14-year-old kid, they are living in a 1000 square foot home. with two bedrooms, and guess where the twins are sleeping?? In an oversized walk-in closet off the parents room. Because the 14-year-old needed a private bedroom because she has ā€œtrauma.ā€ Two five and a half-year-old kids. In a closet. (And yes, there is a window in the closet, but it’s still a closet.). Now the grifter is working on my niece to talk to my parents about getting help with the legal bills.

Yeah, this is why I’m stressed. I am trying to put up boundaries and stay away from the whole situation, but when I see my mother miserable, it is really hard. And with the holidays coming up, I’m not really sure I can sit across a Thanksgiving table from my lazy niece and her grifter and keep a civil tongue.

And for the record, if anybody accuses this of being AI, feel free to contact me. I wish I could say this was made up. Unfortunately, it’s just that crappy of a situation.

Any other "digital nomads" out there?

Hi! My husband decided he wanted to be a digital nomad, so we've left the US and are traveling abroad. Are there any other women over 60 out there who are living this lifestyle? I'm having a hard time adjusting to not having a "home base." Any advice?

Is my adult married 38 yr old son a jerk. Or is it me?

I don't even know where to begin.

They've been married 8 yrs, no kids. I thought it was her who wasnt interested--it's him.

Anyway they both smoke a lot of weed. Just FYI.

Several years ago he wanted to have it out with me because he feels like I am dismissive of him, I don't "see him as a person," and a host of other complaints. He brought up how I taught him to brush his teeth as a complaint. A lot of, what sounded to me, as ridiculous stuff--get over it--was my instinct. But in wanting him to felt heard, I tried to give credence to his litany of complaints.

He threatened to block me, cut me out if his life--we are 7 hrs away from each other. His father has undergone an amputation and a revision and he has not come down, so.. ? What exactly is "cut out?"

I was a helicopter mom. I have opinions and feel I know best. And I helped my husband run a very successful business, put both boys through school and gave solicited career advice. I know i can be a little much.

Now 38 yr old wants me to go to therapy or end relationship. I say, therapy together? He says no. Im not against therapy but he is ANGRY and a daily pot smoker. How about sone therapy for that?

Im 62 and have a disabled husband and my own health concerns. I live my son but I don't like him very much right now. He is a nurse but so uninvolved or concerned with his father's health--and at 38 WHY is hecso--passionate--about OUR mother son relationship? Geezus it sounds unhinged? Or am I wrong? Because today, I dont care.

Nice to meet.com a scam? Or okay?

So I've been living in Cleveland for about a year - I just had to renew my lease so I know it's a year.

When I retired I said I was going to do three things. I was going to move to Cleveland to be closer to my grandson, I was going to take a blowout vacation that nobody in my family would think of ever doing because it's so insane to them, and I was going to learn to fish.

I am 66 female and I spent a month in South America, I moved to cleveland, and I fish a couple times a week :-)

That said, the only men I've met are friends of my grandson and in their early twenties. A girl gets lonely. I do trivia in bars a couple times a week but my trivia team is all female 40ish maybe even 30ish?

So I was online the other night and this thing called nicetomeet.com showed up as a pop up. Basically, you sign up, and you have dinner with four to eight people over 65 in a nice restaurant. It costs 20 bucks a month. So I figured what the hell and I've joined.

Is it ridiculous and a scam or do people really show up to this? I have 2 dates that I've registered for but just curious.. because it seems to be Nationwide not just Cleveland.

If you have tried this, please tell me. Enquiring minds want to know :-)
