Hard Drive or SSD? Storage Question...

I'm not good with computers and anything related so bear with me.

Where I work (small business) we print any invoices/quotes that have been made as a safekeeping of sorts. We have about five years worth of these copies and we recently downsized the office so we don't have as much space for all those physical copies. My sister (prevoiusly worked in another office area) suggested I start scanning those copies onto my laptop (Mac 16GB Memory, 494 GB Storage). My problem is, I'm afraid I will run out of starge soon, especially given that we have been making more invoices/quotes as of late and probably will keep making more going forward. I was looking into external hardrives and ssd card but I'm really not sure what would be best. I'm leaning towards external hard drive but if anyone could give tips/info/opinoins on what you think might be better i would grealty appreciate it! Or also any other solutions you may have.

Thanks guys!
P.S I am planning on keeping physical copies here in the office still but only for about six-12 months (from the date they are created) and then they would get put into the scanner.

Need help managing my screens with eye sensitivity

I have an issue going on that needs to be figured out like asap, as this is affecting my daily and physical life way too much, any advice means a lot. I've never posted about something like this before so if there's a better sub for this please lmk if this isn't the best one.

Long story short I have an illness that causes really bad eye sensitivity to light, especially screens. It's gotten worse and worse, now I can't even use my phone(an iphone). TVs/monitors are a lot more manageable, and I've spent some time trying to understand why this happens since adjusting basic settings like brightness/gamma or putting on night light doesn't do anything at this point.

From what I've found there's a handful of things to pay attention to like temporal dithering and pulse width modulation, and I've changed everything I can on the current TV I'm using like noise reduction and dynamic settings for contrast and gamma, along with adjusting all the normal display and color settings. But this is basically hopeless so far with an iPhone, which I will probably be replacing, so if there's any recommendations for that I'd appreciate it.

But also I just really want to know what I can do for my PC, which is what the TV is used with, along with another TV and monitor I use (since I switch between rooms with an extended setup). I've seen other stuff being important like matching the bit stuff and color depth from the gpu to screen, but not sure how to do that, and also have no idea how to change the other stuff i mentioned like the dithering and PWM. All I've been able to find on my gpu(an nvidia 5060) is the basic color stuff like contrast being a big one, and changing what I could with framerate stuff.

Hey everyone just stop by for asking. Do free online AI image generators keep uploaded photos or use them for training?

I'm trying to understand the privacy risks of free online AI image editors that can be used without creating an account.

If someone uploads a photo, generates an edited image, and later deletes the files from their own phone, could the website still retain copies on its servers?

Also, is there a reliable way to find out whether uploaded images are used for AI training when the privacy policy doesn't clearly say?

I'd appreciate factual explanations or experiences from people who have researched this topic.

transcription of recordings

Hi there. I'm studying journalism and have several recordings—each about an hour long—of interviews and the like. Does anyone know of an app or website that can transcribe audio to text?

Are cloud computing and data centers sustainable?

When I say sustainable, I don’t mean it as a buzzword. I mean whether the physical infrastructure can keep scaling to meet demand. To support ever growing cloud consumption and digitalization of stuff, especially with the rise of AI workloads.

Cloud providers have to keep building data centers and expanding capacity. Is there a point where we hit a hard limit, where we can’t add more compute, storage, or capacity because of constraints like power, land, cooling, or chip supply? You need water, electricity, GPUs, memory, copper, silicon, etc. And land too, although data centers I think are quite dense so unlike what most people think, I think it's not the biggest concern here.

As I said, obviously there's a limit, but my point is, will we ever hit it? What is the tendency growing to? And what are the biggest challenges?

And I know there's a huge ideological fatigue with climate discourse and whatnot, but this really seems concerning to me. I'm no expert on the matter, so maybe you guys can clear things up for me.

Should I Buy a Gaming Laptop or Build a PC? Need Some Advice

Should I Buy a Gaming Laptop or Build a PC? Need Some Advice

I currently have a 10-year-old all-in-one PC with an i3 processor. It overheats and shuts down even while browsing Chrome, so I need a new system.

I have a job, but I also want to start earning on the side through YouTube and freelancing. I'm interested in gaming too, so I need a system that can handle video editing, gaming, and other creative work.

My budget is:

- Laptop: ₹70K, stretchable to ₹75K

- PC: Up to ₹90K

Due to the current price hikes, I'm confused about which option makes more sense. I can get a decent PC build for ₹90K, but a laptop around ₹70–75K would offer portability. The biggest advantage of a PC is that I can upgrade it later, whereas laptop upgrades are limited.

I'll also be buying on EMI, which means the total cost could be ₹10–15K higher than the actual price.

I'm considering buying a laptop now for around ₹70K and building a better PC later if I start earning from YouTube or freelancing. But there's no guarantee I'll make money from these activities, and spending ₹90K on a PC without generating any income would be a risk.

What would you recommend in my situation? Should I buy a laptop now or invest in a PC? I'd appreciate advice from people who have experience with both, especially regarding long-term value and performance.

I think I shut down my pc while its updating. Now everytime I try to turn it on, screen and mouse wont turn on.

When it is running, I tried to turn monitor off and on. But it only says "No signal detected" then goes black. I am using Win11

What do you wish your phone or computer could do automatically for you?

Hey everyone!
I’m a developer looking for an idea for my next project, and I’d love to hear from regular people about their everyday frustrations.
Think about all the little things you do on your phone or computer every day. Tasks that take time, repetitive actions, things you keep putting off, or stuff you wish could just happen automatically.
What would you want your phone or computer to do for you without having to ask it every single time?
For example:
Automatically organize your files, photos, screenshots, and downloads.
Handle boring paperwork, emails, or online forms.
Compare prices and find the best deal when shopping.
Keep track of important messages, bills, appointments, and deadlines.
Take care of repetitive tasks you currently do manually.
These are just examples — I’m much more interested in your own ideas!
It doesn’t have to involve AI or be anything complicated. It could be a small, annoying task that you wish technology would finally take care of.
What’s something you still do manually that you think your phone or computer should be smart enough to handle by itself?
I’d love to hear what would genuinely make your everyday life easier!😊

Do/How do tech companies (such as meta, x, openai, etc) prevent people from deleting their account to stop a ban that has not yet arrived from coming and then create a new account?

Hi all, new here. Not a tech expert but came here finally to get an answer to a question I’ve been curious about for a while.

Say hypothetically, a user committed a bannable offence on one of these platforms, thought they were going to be banned, then deleted their accounts to preserve their access (as in so the email address and other stuff linked to the account can be reused for another account). I personally don’t think it would work and surely tech companies would be smart enough to know this would occur in some scenarios, but was wondering what you all thought?

Sorry if my question sounds dumb or silly, just not a tech expert so wanted to have my question answered by someone who knows this sort of stuff.

How to change photo EXIF metadata to show Samsung Galaxy S24 camera details in Samsung Gallery?

I have a Samsung Galaxy S24 (SM-S921B), but when I open a downloaded photo in Samsung Gallery, it shows iPhone 13 as the device model, along with its camera lens, aperture, and other EXIF details.

I want to change the metadata so Samsung Gallery displays my Galaxy S24 model and its camera/lens information instead of the iPhone 13 details.

Is there a way to edit the EXIF metadata on Android using ExifTool, Termux, or another metadata editor so that Samsung Gallery recognizes and displays the modified information?

Laptop/PC Advice (Should I replace or fix?)

I have very little use for a heavy lifter, generally none at all which is why I prefer apple products.
If it plays youtube and netflix, can run steam games, discord, excel and send emails, I genuinely do not need anything else.

I like Apple’s systems and how easy they are to use, I have an Ipad mini and an Iphone 17 and probably the biggest thing is the device interaction. I’m also not ashamed to admit aesthetics play a big part in it too, I love anything green.

I have no experience buying refurbished laptops, my 2020 Macbook air is working completely fine still but it has a problem with the flexgate so the screen is practically seizure bait.

I can replace the screen myself on a physical level but I’ve heard you have to code things together and (because I am an apple user) none of that makes sense to me, I have a friend who would be able to do it but at the same time… Is it worth the effort?

I am generally a low waste person and because I know my Macbook works fine barre the screen I just don’t want to get rid of it.
I was using my ipad as a phone and an iphone 6 as a hotspot for about a year before I decided to get a new phone.

—-
Now, if it’s recommended to me to just buy something new, I’ve been considering a PC.

I have no real need for my computer to be portable aside from wanting to be lazy and do stuff in bed and I have other devices.
There is a variable wherein the next two years I might go back to university and need it to run simulations and R-studio.

Obviously I’ve looked at the Mac but I’ve genuinely never met anyone who’s owned one, everyone I know without a laptop has a PC but they’re engineers or heavy gamers and I just need something very very simple.

Money wise, I wouldn’t want to spend an arm and a leg on something that would need upgrading or replacing (unavoidable, I know).

I am competent with fixing hardware but software problems are difficult for me.

Clearly, I am very confused and inexperienced with technology. You could probably assume I’m a 23 year old with the technological competency of a grandmother who knows how to change the font size of the text on her phone.

I just need some good opinions…. Please?

All I use Alexa for is time, timer, and playing music from my phone. Looking for a Iphone dock as a replacement.

I've searched and found a few candidates but wanted to get the internet's advice. I just want to easily plug my phone in and be able to ask it the time, set timers, and play music from youtube, music app, podcast app, whatever.

I also want it to be offline itself (unlike Alexa) and any online use is through the phone itself. I'm assuming any solution will probably involve Siri, which is acceptable, but I don't want to have to press a button to set timers, since I'm using this for cooking, and I don't always have my hands free.

I trust Apple a bit more than Amazon. In any case, having only 1 company spy on me is better than 2.

Thanks for any help.

If the internet disappeared for 24 hours, what would surprise people by breaking first?

I think people would expect social media and streaming to be the biggest problems, but the real impact might be less obvious. Payment systems, logistics, traffic signals, remote access, and even routine business operations could become difficult pretty quickly. A lot of everyday systems depend on internet connectivity in ways we barely notice until something stops working. It would be interesting to see which offline alternaives people still know how to use.

What is the best way to find a 4k TV under $350 in 2026

I'm in the market for a 4k TV with at least HDR10 support, preferably Dolby Vision as well, for under $350 but would prefer something closer to $200 if possible. I know this is a pretty low budget right now, especially in terms of brightness, but I would like to upgrade some of my setup from an old 1080p TV to 4k. I am making this post so that I can see what the people in this sub will recommend with this budget.

The TV would mainly be used for watching movies, but would also get a lot of gaming use as well with possibly some sports content every know and then.

Amazon, Walmart, and Costco would be my preferred vendors, but if other sellers get recommended, I'll probably check them out. I would prefer to stay away from Facebook Marketplace as well, so please do not recommend me to look there as I already have previously and prefer sticking to the already listed sellers.

I really am not too bothered about the brand or on-board OS, as long as it is not LG, because I am currently using an Apple TV 4k to stream all of my content from a few streaming services as well as my Jellyfin server.

Edit: looking for 50+ inches, 55 preferable

How do you spoof your location? (with or without a vpn)

A tf2 server i frequent usually tells you where someone joined from (i.e XXX has joined from Russia!)

I wonder if it’s possible to trick it into saying you joined from a funny country (North Korea) or a territory (like Falkland Islands or Norfolk Island). do I need a VPN or can I change something in my computer so it thinks I’m there

Phone suddenly fixed itself?

I've had my phone for the past 7 years. It never worked properly, there was always something broken about it. It never saved pictures I took, didn't remember any app data and randomly crashed games. The good thing is about this, infinite storage! Anyways. As of January of this year, my phone kept randomly putting my volume to max, I had to manually turn it down to the point the volume button on my phone is almost inside of the phone. It took a while for it to connect my wired headphones, and the touch screen barely worked. The touch screen would either not let me drag things, only click, or only let me tap once ever few seconds, making typing hard.

This morning my phone started lagging HARD, so I thought it was best to restart it before going to bed. I woke up to it fully booted up. I logged in and saw a text message of a conformation key to a french website that I've never heard of - mind you, I don't speak fluent French. I don't know who took control of my phone, because they did leave a trace in my browser that they were on said website, but who ever was on my phone, you fixed my issues! I can easily type again and my volume button works again!!

Earbud Recommendations

I'm starting a new job as a real estate agent in New York City and looking to invest in a high-quality pair of wireless earbuds. I need to get new earbuds that will allow me to make phone calls while walking the streets without having any noise interference on either end. Ideally, I'd like to hear callers clearly while also minimizing traffic, wind and other city noise on their end. I'll be wearing them for hours throughout the day, so they need to be comfortable. I also listen to music very often while commuting—sound quality is also a priority. I use an iPhone, and my budget is flexible for something reliable and high-quality.

I'm currently considering the AirPods Pro 3 and Sony WF-1000XM6, but I'm open to other recommendations. Which earbuds would you recommend, specifically in terms of microphone quality, comfort and sound quality?
