Moving to Detroit very soon. Reposting this to get more tailored responses!

My first post was much more vague/general, so that was my fault. Now that I have a better idea of where I’ll be working and what I’m looking for, I’d really appreciate more specific recommendations.

I’m a 27-year-old single woman moving to Detroit for work. My office will be in the downtown/Financial District area of Detroit, and I’ll most likely be driving to work.

Ideally, I’d like my commute to be under ~30 minutes, but I’m happy to drive a little farther if the area is really worth it.

What I’m looking for:
Safety is my #1 priority, especially as a single woman living alone.
Quiet, peaceful, residential surroundings.
Close to nature, parks, trails, lakes, greenery, etc.
I love charming suburbs with a strong sense of community and character.

I’m not particularly concerned about rent. I’d rather pay more to live somewhere I genuinely love than choose somewhere cheaper that I don’t enjoy.

I’m also open to some city/urban vibes. I don’t need to be completely suburban if the area is safe and peaceful.

The vibe I’m imagining is basically Stars Hollow from Gilmore Girls 😂, charming, cozy, green, peaceful, with cute little downtown areas and a strong community feel. I know it’s fictional, but I’m looking for that kind of Connecticut/New England feeling. At the same time, I wouldn’t mind having some city energy nearby.

One other factor: I’m not white, so I’d ideally like somewhere that feels welcoming and comfortable for someone from a different background. I’m trying to find the balance between diversity/inclusivity and safety. If I absolutely had to prioritize, I would choose an area that is less diverse over somewhere I don’t feel safe, but ideally I’d love to find somewhere that gives me both.

So for people who actually know the Detroit area:
Where would you recommend I look? Which suburbs/neighborhoods would fit this lifestyle? And are there any areas you would specifically avoid?

I’d especially love recommendations from women who live alone or people who have moved to the Detroit area from somewhere else and had to figure this out themselves.

Thank you!

Good places to look for an apartment

Hi all, I'll be moving to Detroit soon from AA. I was wondering if people had any suggestion on good buildings/leasing companies to look into. My usual strategy is to look on criaglist. That's the best way I've found more vintagey apartments that aren't crazy expensive. I'm interested in those hole-in-the-wall apartments that have been around forever. I'm looking for something 1300 max, ideally 800-1200. 1 bedroom. Within 30 min drive to watefront area. Any suggestions?

Looking for 1BR Apartment, Condo or House in Detroit/Metro Detroit. $1,600 Max Move Before Nov. 1

Hi everyone! I’m looking for a place to rent in Detroit or the Metro Detroit area and hoping to move before the end of October since my current lease is coming to an end.

I’m open to a:

  • 1-bedroom apartment
  • Condo
  • Small house

My budget is $1,600/month or less.

I’m pretty flexible on location as long as it’s in Detroit or a surrounding Metro Detroit community. I’m hoping to find somewhere clean, safe, and available soon.

If you’re a private landlord, know someone renting a property, or know of any places currently available, please send me a message or drop the information below.

Thank you!

Any Halloween-friendly wedding photo spots in Detroit?

I'm getting married on halloween (a Saturday) this year, and we have a couple hours in the afternoon slotted for pics around the city.

We frequent Eastern Market on Saturdays and think it would be cute to do our normal rounds as if it were any other saturday.

Considering it will be Halloween day, are there any notable spots in the city that will be festive or worthwhile to swing by?

We will be in normal bride / groom clothing.

Visiting from Texas. Looking for the best pizza.

A friend and I will be visiting Detroit for the first time ever. What are some of your best pizza recommendations for Detroit style pizza? We’ll be staying downtown.

Update: thank you all, the weekend has come and gone and my buddy and I went to Michigan & Trumbull and we were not let down. Thank you all for your suggestions. We had a great time in the city overall. I came from Fort Worth and they recently opened the first Jet’s here so whenever I’m craving a taste of Detroit again I will be hitting them up.

Newly divorced mom looking for good neighborhood to move to.

Hello, I’m here asking for a friend. Looking for suggestions for places on the east side to live. She’s never been “on her own” before so we’re looking for places with good neighborhoods (and by that I mean neighbors who help one another and have a sense of local community). Any suggestions help!

Other than Downtown/Midtown/Corktown, which Detroit Neighborhood has seen the most significant turnaround during the city’s new renaissance?

I’ve heard some really good things about East Village and Morningside becoming really nice with good investment, and it seems like North Corktown might be the next neighborhood that sees significant revitalization.

Any other neighborhoods that you’ve seen been transformed over the past 5-10 years?

Foundation vs ROOST vs Siren

Visiting Detroit for a weekend trip and trying to decide between the Detroit Foundation Hotel, ROOST at Book Tower, and The Siren. Looking for something slightly romantic, but I’m also really into history and love architecture. The prices for all three are relatively comparable, so cost won’t be a deciding factor.

Any advice on which hotel I should book? Thanks!

Dyno climbing lessons?

I would love to try climbing but have never done anything like it, I don't see any true lessons on the Dyno website for true beginners, I'm wondering if anyone has any alternatives or experience there doing a sort of trial by fire learning?

D/deaf community in Detroit

Hi! I’m taking an introductory American Sign Language class right now, and I’m looking for people who might be willing to help me practice ASL, as well as people who might know of any events that might be occurring in the D/deaf community that I could possibly attend.

If there’s anyone who might be able to help me with this, I would appreciate it tremendously! Thank you so much!

Recommendations for Detroit area nursing jobs

Hello!
I’m graduating from nursing school in May and am just looking for any advice from nurses in the area and people in the community of the best hospitals in the area. I’m moving from out of state and have seen some stuff online, but would love some takes from people working in or receiving care at these places. I’m considering either Henry Ford or Corewell as I’ve heard these are some solid places in the metro area.
Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Trick or Treating in the City?

So where are we trick or treating (for those of us not in the wealthy, bougie area of the city)? No one in my area trick or treats / hands out candy. So what is the alternative for children?

ETA: thank you everyone who has been commenting and been so welcoming! It really has made my week and while that may be silly to some, trust me when I say it’s not nothing to me.

Apartment hunting

Hey so I’ll be moving at the end of the month and I’ve narrowed it down to a few other apartments I’ve found. Does anyone live in a my of these apartments and can tell me more about them?

- The Alcove (Southfield)
- Parc on 12 (Southfield)
- Metro Point Apartments (Romulus)
- East village Eastpoint Apartments( Downtown Detroit)

Or if anyone has any recommendations of apartments I’m open, I’m wanting to stay in the middle of my job (which is in Novi) and my school (WSU) but if I’m closer to school I’m okay with that as well!

Princeton Management

I wish someone would have told me about this management company. Honestly any management company in Detroit is a hit or miss but this one here fucked me over so bad. They don’t gaf about their tenants all they care about is money. They will literally rent you a roach infested apartments for $1000 and act like they didn’t know it was already a problem. Please if anybody is currently looking for apartments do not mess with this company!

Visiting Detroit for 2 days: tell me what to do

I’m going to the Detroit-Chicago Thanksgiving game (lifelong Lions fan, first time ever going to an NFL game so I’m pretty stoked). I have the entire next day, Friday, completely open. What are some must-sees for one day in Detroit? Mid 20s female who wants to see the best Detroit spots while I’m there. Food, sightseeing, shopping, historical spots, whatever you can think of.
