How does the city income tax work for self-employed folks?
Hi!
I just moved to Detroit. I have a small online business I run on the side that's self-employment income. Some years it does pretty well, other years I only make a little profit off of it. I file this income on my taxes every year. But I'm not sure how this works in Detroit with a city income tax too.
If anyone out there is self employed and knows what to do, I'd appreciate hearing from you!

Restaurant/Bar recommendations
Wife and I are coming to detroit for the Lions vs Vikings game but have never been nor even been to Michigan in general. We both love to eat and love experiencing new places and people through the food and bar scenes.
So I ask, what are a few must go stops in the city?
Edit: Since someone brought it up, I should clarify that I don't just mean bars with good food, but full service restaurants that y'all would recommend and good places to catch a drink.

Moving to Detroit as a grad student
Hello Detroit! I'm moving to start an externship at the children's hospital of Michigan at the end of June. I'm hoping someone could point me in the right direction of neighborhoods/apartments for a single person with a cat. I don't have much preference I'm just hoping to find relatively affordable locations and maybe some insider information on the different neighborhoods. Thanks!

How much are you paying for car insurance in Detroit? Specifically, a Jeep Wrangler?
Hi everyone! I’m moving to Detroit soon and looking into getting a Jeep Wrangler, ideally a brand-new two-door Sport or a relatively new used one.
I’ve been looking at insurance prices online, and some of the estimates seem absolutely insane!! So I’d love to hear from people who actually live in the Detroit area.
If you drive a Jeep Wrangler, I’d really appreciate it if you could share:
- Which model year and trim you have
- Roughly how much you pay per month for insurance
- Whether you have full coverage (comprehensive + collision) or liability only
- Which insurance company you’re with
- Whether you’re financing, leasing, or own the car outright
I’m curious whether insurance is genuinely as expensive as the online estimates suggest and whether anyone has managed to find a reasonably priced policy for a Wrangler in Detroit.
Thanks in advance!

Tech recruiters/agencies in detroit
Hi everyone,
I’m planning to move to Detroit in the next couple of months and I’m attempting to seek employment out there before I end up moving. I know the job market is rough for everybody right now but would anyone have any good ideas in regards to tech recruiters/agencies I can reach out to? I have about 3-5 years worth of tech experience at this point in my career and I’m looking to find something to at least establish myself in the area. Thanks again!

26M Indy -> Detroit?
Hey everyone, interviewing for an engineering job in the area. I grew up in the UP and attended Michigan Tech but have barely been to the lower peninsula lol, only visited Detroit once as an adult beyond just passing through the SEMI area so it'll be more or less new to me.
Expecting to make 82k minimum and within the next year I would go up to around 90k after getting an expected credential.
Looking to live alone and spend no more than $1750 as a grand total for a not-super-old apartment complex. I'd likely live downtown, within walking distance from work (My office would be located downtown, right by the Michigan DPM station) Is this budget unrealistic? Since the position does not have any telework, being close as possible to the office is important.
How bad are the auto insurance rates? From my research they are astronomical in the city (I currently pay around $140 a month total in Indiana for a 2026 car). I realize if I'm walking to work I would be using my car maybe a couple times a week max depending on what I'm doing and whether I need to leave downtown for it.
Is downtown detroit generally dead or is there enough going on? I'd be attending social events such as meetups, especially at the start when trying to make friends, so if those are generally more in the burbs then that would be less convenient for someone who lives downtown.
Currently live in Indianapolis. I don't hate it but I've plateaued at my job and need something new so this is a good opportunity to try a new city. Indy is cheap for a major city, has enough going on and it's been relatively easy to make friends (didn't know anyone when I moved here for the job 2 years ago, met people from reddit and discord and then branched out offline from there).
What I don't like about Indy is the bible belt-y atmosphere, even in the city being asked "are you married" and 'what church do you attend" are not uncommon icebreaker questions. The state as a whole being heavily republican doesn't help much either, I've found that most people here who are also transplants and not the conservative and bible-thumping type, are not really partial to the area either and don't plan to stay for more than a couple years or so if possible. The dating scene is also not great, I know both apps and singles events are generally dogshit everywhere but a lot of women my age here are more conservative/religious and looking to just settle down quickly which narrows down the compatible dating pool quite a bit.
I'm a little skeptical since overall, Detroit/SEMI doesn't seem like a huge improvement over Indy save for not being located in a deep red state (since I'm not tied down to a perticular area, I'm applying wherever I can find a suitable job and have a couple other interviews in other cities lined up rn). Both Detroit and Indy metros are spread out and while the suburbs are good, it's more geared towards those with families who are looking to buy a house, rather than a single mid-20s guy. However the job seems ok so I'm willing to at least learn more in the interview and go from there.
Based on all this, does Detroit sound like a good fit for me?

Fire Rings Near Lake Orion/Auburn Hills?
I love to camp but don’t have the schedule to do so right now. My favorite part of camping is having a fire and roasting hot dogs and s’mores. Are there any free publicly available fire rings in Lake Orion/Auburn Hills area where I can go for an afternoon and build a fire? I’ve been to Bald Mountain but all they have is the above ground grills (from what I’ve seen). I know campgrounds would have them but I don’t want to rent/reserve a campsite just to build a fire for an evening activity. Any ideas?

Where to buy Fordite/Detroit agate?
Hello! I'll be visiting next week and would like to add another piece of Fordite specifically from a Detroit/Windsor plant. I see DIA has some but theirs are too expensive for my budget. Looking for under $75. I'll be in Dearborn, then near downtown. Thanks!

Safest parking options at DTW ?
looking for a safe, reliable place to park my car for a few days while traveling.
For those who regularly fly out of DTW, which parking options do you recommend? Is the airport’s official long-term parking worth the extra cost, or are off-site parking lots equally safe?
I’d appreciate recommendations based on security, shuttle reliability, and overall value. Thanks!

30sM from Pittsburgh here for 4 months (Dearborn/Detroit)
Hey everyone! I’m a 33-year-old dude temporarily staying in Melvindale for the next four months for work, originally from Pittsburgh. I don't know anyone in the area yet, so I'm looking to get out, meet some cool people, and check out the local scene.
I'm pretty laid-back but easygoing and outgoing once I'm out. I'm up for pretty much anything, but specifically looking to check out:
• Local dive bars
• Arcades or movie theaters
• Punk or EDM shows
• Museums around the city
If you’re down to grab a drink, hit an arcade, or head to a show sometime soon, drop a comment or shoot me a DM!

Hotel Advice for First Time Visitor
Hi All,
I'll be visiting Detroit for the first time over Halloween weekend, to see a band play in Corktown. I'm traveling solo and have already fallen down the rabbit hole in trying to figure out where to stay. My budget definitely doesn't allow for the MGM Grand or any of those hotels, and anything in my budget in that area is over on the Canadian side. I'm not sure how it would work if I took a rideshare back and forth over the border. I'm not even sure that's allowed?
I'll have some downtime by myself leading up to the show day, so I plan to do a little bit of exploring for Halloween shenanigans. I guess my real question is, should I try to stick to a hotel in the Corktown area so I can walk to the venue? Or try a few miles away and get a rideshare or use public transportation?
Thanks All!

How does Michigan winter even work
Texan (I know ew sorry) moving up to Michigan next year, I was wondering logistically what do yall do during winter? I know of course it is much more cold and snowy than here in Texas, I’m already planning to get a good jacket and some boots, are there any other essentials I should plan on getting? I was also wondering do you just wear your snow boots to work or do people change when you get there (or neither)? I will be in a medical setting wearing scrubs, do I need layers to go under the scrubs rather than just a normal long sleeve? Any input is much appreciated!!
Edit: thank you so much everyone!!! I really did not expect to get so many responses, yall are the best! Can’t wait to be there soon!! (Side note if you want to drop recs for literally anything food gyms cool places to go see it would be very much appreciated) 🫶🏼

Looking for a Co-working space for lots of Zoom Calls
Hi all, I am looking for a co-working space in the Detroit area, within or close to the city. I have a remote job and have 3-4 hours of Zoom Calls a day, so sitting in those tiny booths all day isn't ideal, nor it talking out loud in a larger communal space. Does anyone have suggestions for spaces to look into that offer good options for Call users?
