Meta A Reminder on Posting and Disallowed Topics

Hello, r/AskCanada!

The mod team would like to share some reminders about posting and address several recurring issues we are seeing on the subreddit.

General reminders

r/AskCanada is a subreddit for asking Canadians and people residing in Canada questions. While this is not a hard requirement, posts should be clearly relevant to Canadians. If your question is broad or not Canada specific, it may be better suited to a more general subreddit.

r/AskCanada is not an immigration subreddit. We do not provide advice on moving to Canada, visas, permanent residence, work permits, refugee claims, or related topics. If you are seeking immigration guidance, you must post in r/ImmigrationCanada. Posts asking how to move to Canada will be removed.

We also ask that you check whether your question has been asked recently before posting. We are seeing a high volume of very similar posts, which quickly overwhelms the feed. Duplicate questions will be removed.

Moratoriums on specific topics

The moderation team recognizes that recent developments and ongoing events in the United States have generated significant concern and frustration for many Americans. However, we ask that users be mindful that r/AskCanada is a Canadian focused space, and that discussion here is intended to center Canadian perspectives, experiences, and questions.

Posts asking about:

  • US states joining Canada
  • Americans receiving refugee or asylum status in Canada
  • Canadians providing assistance, shelter, or advocacy for Americans
  • Apologies, self positioning, or “one of the good ones” statements directed at Canadians

are not permitted and will be removed.

Canada is not a backup plan for the United States, nor does it exist to mitigate or absorb the consequences of US political or social failures. Responsibility for addressing these issues rests with the United States and should be addressed through its own domestic processes and institutions.

Thank you to all users for your understanding and cooperation as we enforce these rules going forward.

I asked an LLM to compare the history curriculum in each province, is this accurate ?

Ok so with all that's going on right now, and with my oldest finishing elementary school, I started to wonder how much of the cultural divide in Canada starts at the very early years. School and history classes are critical in how we think about our culture. So I asked an LLM to categorize the curriculum in history between focus on english and french canadian history.

The split seems very strong. Is this accurate from your perspective?

📍 Quebec

The Ratio: 20% English vs. 80% French Canadian history.

French Canadian Content: Focuses intensely on New France (1645 and 1745), seigneurial life, French explorers, Lower Canada (1820), and Quebec society in 1905 and 1980.

English Canadian Content: Restricted primarily to the British Conquest, the constitutional changes under British rule, and how Confederation impacted Quebec.

📍 Ontario

The Ratio: 65% English vs. 35% French Canadian history.

French Canadian Content: Centers on New France (pre-1713), early French-Indigenous alliances, the early fur trade, and pre-Confederation battles like the War of 1812.

English Canadian Content: Covers British North America, Loyalist settlement, Confederation, industrialization, and Canada's role in 20th-century global conflicts.

📍 New Brunswick

The Ratio: 70% English vs. 30% French Canadian (Acadian) history.

French Canadian Content: Emphasizes Acadian settlement at Port-Royal, relations with the Mi'kmaq, and the Expulsion of the Acadians (Le Grand Dérangement).

English Canadian Content: Focuses heavily on British colonial rule, timber and fishing economies, and Loyalist migration after the American Revolution.

📍 Nova Scotia & Prince Edward Island

The Ratio: 75% English vs. 25% French Canadian (Acadian) history.

French Canadian Content: Covers early Acadian agricultural societies, dyke-building, and the regional impacts of the Anglo-French imperial wars.

English Canadian Content: Focuses on British military strongholds (like Halifax), Scottish and Irish immigration, and local maritime trade.

📍 Newfoundland and Labrador

The Ratio: 95% English vs. 5% French Canadian history.

French Canadian Content: Mentions brief seasonal French fishing rights and early imperial conflicts over the Avalon Peninsula.

English Canadian Content: Focuses almost entirely on British and Irish fishing settlements, the local cod fishery, and the province's distinct political path before joining Confederation in 1949.

📍 Manitoba

The Ratio: 80% English vs. 20% French Canadian history.

French Canadian Content: Explores French-Canadian voyageurs, the Francophone roots of the Métis Nation, and Louis Riel's role in the Red River Resistance.

English Canadian Content: Covers the Selkirk settlers, the Hudson's Bay Company, agricultural development, and early 20th-century immigration.

📍 Saskatchewan & Alberta

The Ratio: 85% English vs. 15% French Canadian history.

French Canadian Content: Explores coureurs des bois during the western fur trade expansion and the North-West Resistance.

English Canadian Content: Focuses heavily on the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR), European homesteading, prairie agriculture, and Western political movements.

📍 British Columbia

The Ratio: 90% English vs. 10% French Canadian history.

French Canadian Content: Mentions French-Canadian fur traders who traveled west across the Rockies with the North West Company.

English Canadian Content: Focuses on maritime exploration (Cook and Vancouver), the gold rushes, British colonial governance, and Pacific Rim immigration.

Tourism How to prepare to travel to Canada?

Hello Canadians!

I'm an American uni student looking for somewhere not too far to spend a spring or winter break at. I was interested in specifically Quebec and had some questions

  1. How to spend money? Does canada lean cash or card/digital currency centric like the US? My only experience travelling as an adult on my own was to Japan which very much leans into a cash and analog society. Or does my need for physical cash change province to province significantly?

If I am better off just using my card and saving the hassle. How do I set that up? Do I need to talk with my bank and have them make a sort of "travel account" with converted CAD in it? My primary bank right now is Bank of America though I could possibly change to Chase soon if that matters at all.

  1. Weather, what do Quebec temperatures look like in Spring and Winter. I'd like an idea of how I should pack. (The months of December or March)

If you have any other tips or spots you think travelers should see feel free to drop them! :)

Political Dear Canadian, why are we still buying Tesla cars?

As you may have heard, Elon Musk openly called for the separation of Quebec, Alberta and Saskatchewan from Canada.

When I ask Tesla drivers why they bought their cars, most say it's to save on gas. Others say they love the interior and how it drives.

With Elon calling for the separation and essentially the end of Canada, can you still justify buying a Tesla and making Elon richer?

How to get Canadian Drivers License as an Australian?

Hello friends,

I am one of the very unique and orignal Australian men moving to canada this year and I am a little confused about the requirements/expectations to get a canadian drivers license. There seems to be so much conflicting information online. I will be living in BC and buying a car in vancouver. Can anyone give me some clarity or a loose breakdown of how I can get a canadian drivers license. I believe in BC im allowed to drive on my australian license for 90 days? Im under the impression I dont need an International Drivers Permit as my license is already in English. I've heard I may need to exchange it. Does that mean they actually take my Australian drivers license in order to give me a Canadian one?

Forgive my ignorance and feel free to explain it to me like a child!

Thanks in advance <3

Life Best city to move to? (Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, Edmonton)

I recently graduated from uni and am back home in the east coast. I am aggressively looking for jobs, at home but also from away. Originally I really wanted to move to Montreal, and lately I’ve been wanting to move to Toronto. But now I’m thinking that I should expand my search to Alberta too (Calgary or Edmonton) which is cheaper to live in. I’m looking for advice/recs with these options that’d give me what I’m looking for which is: multiculturalism (I’m black), liveliness (I like to go out, socialize, grab dinner, club on occasion, go to events, music, shop, art etc), and good public transportation. Any insights are appreciated :)

Food Do you prefer when a company adds a “Canadian made” label for their products?

I recently realized my favourite chocolate company is actually Canadian and that made me buy the full pack instead of just 1 or 2 bars. Does this help you purchase more items as well?

If Alberta secedes, isn't most of the land there owned by the Crown?

I realize the chance of Alberta actually being able to do so is next to nil. But if it did, wouldn't the new country just be the south-east quadrant plus a splat-shaped area of land near the west border (see link below; the yellow areas)? It's not like a province can say, "we're leaving" and just expect to take all the Crown Lands, right? They're held in trust for Canada, not "something that used to be part of Canada", as I understand it?

Hi Canadians,

I'm new in this country. I got a warehouse job 6 months ago in Mississauga. And I believe that I'm good at my job so I'm currently looking for a salary increase opportunities. How do I approach employers here? In my previous roles oversees (middle east and africa) my approach was more need based appeal to my employers orherwise if I mentioned what I did they might be defensive and undermine me. So, I'm wondering do I frame my request as a value I delivered or do I frame it as a request?

I honestly need to get paid more my landlord raised rent my bills gone up so is the general cost of living. I'm looking for solutions here and guidance if someone has negative comments in mind please spare me the negativity and move past this post.

Thank you for your inputs :)

Why do we celebrated Thanksgiving?

To be honest,I have never like Thanksgiving or figured out we celebrated it. It's mainly a U.s holiday and for some reason we have it have in canada. I just don't think we should celebrating something from a country who president has been threatened to annex us for nearly the past 2 years. We do you think?

What job classification would an Investigator be?

Hi there, I am just curious what classification of job in Canada would an Investigator position be under? Is it called something different in Canada? Wife wants to get her Masters at University British Columbia since we are from WA and is very similar environment wise, and I am already in my career field here doing criminal defense work. If I wanted to do something similar, mainly just investigations, what would the job classification on the government sites be?

Do you know any Maple MAGA members?

American here in peace.

I was surprised to learn about Maple MAGA, as I can't understand why a Canadian would support Trump. I learned about Maple MAGA specifically in the context of Alberta, but apparently they exist in other provinces too?

My question is, do you know any? Why do they support Trump?

I'm curious about Canada and would like to hear what Canadians think about other parts of their country.

Canadians, do you turn off your outdoor home lights off when you go to bed?

This might sound like a weird question, but at night, I turn on the lights outside and leave them on when going to bed..This morning, my dad told me to turn them off at night as it's a waste of electricity.

Oddly enough 2 days later in watching Nancy Grace on TV about a crime case and she said even her 5 year old knows when you go to bed you keep the lights on. My dad says it's different because it's the states.

We are in a rural to suburban neighbourhood and it's pretty safe here for the most part.... So I'm curious.
