Do you think Aus is the best place for middle class people ?

• Upvotes

Salaries are higher than Europe, taxes are lower than Western Europe with a similiar-ish COL, you get bigger homes, better weather, more space, etc, and universal healthcare.

Ofc, you could make more in the US if you work in something like Tech or Consulting, but for the avg Middle class person who doesn't depend on the welfare state, Australia truly seems like the best atm.

Thoughts?

Looking for volunteer to be interviewed for assignment

Hello! I’m a student from Malaysia and I’m looking for an interviewer from Australia who would be willing to help me with my assignment. The assignment is related to analysis linguistics variation.

I need to interview someone who was born and raised in Australia, or someone who has lived and grown up there until now.

The interview will only involve simple questions about their childhood, growing up, hobbies, daily routines, whether they are studying or working, and how they celebrate special occasions or festivals in their country.

The interview will be conducted online at your convenience via platforms like Google Meet, Zoom, Skype, or any preferred platform. The interview will also be recorded, but only my lecturer can see the interview video.

If you're interested in participating, please reply to this post or message me directly. I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have. Thank you :)

I bought a phone from Green Gadgets, but I'm starting to have second thoughts

Hi everyone!

Sorry if this is a long one; I'm having a proper week from hell, and I need an honest-to-God opinion on what to do. I purchased a refurbished Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 from Green Gadgets last Friday, well and truly after the cutoff time for same-day dispatch. So I spent the whole weekend knowing there wouldn't be an update, and then Monday came. I got my update to say a "label had been created", and later that day I got "Shipping information approved by Australia Post".

Then Tuesday came and went; no update. Wednesday, I emailed Green Gadgets to inform them I hadn't received any updates. Then an hour and a half later, I sent them: "Good evening. If possible, I would like to cancel my order. I have found an alternative that works out better for me financially, and I would like my refund processed as soon as possible." One hour later, I received

"Hi OP,

Thank you for reaching out to us.

We received your cancellation request, but your order had unfortunately already been processed and dispatched yesterday via Australia Post.

Your tracking number is [blank]. Please keep in mind that the courier's website can take up to 24 hours to update and display active tracking information.

You have the option to refuse the delivery. If you are unable to do so, kindly email us, and we will supply you with the necessary return instructions. Please note that in this case, the customer will be responsible for the return shipping costs.

Please be advised that return to sender is a low-priority service. Due to this, the return delivery generally takes longer than usual to be delivered and, in some cases is returned without event scans. Please allow 10 business days for the return.

Once we receive the device back, we will process your refund as soon as possible.

If you have other concerns or questions, please feel free to respond to this email and we will be happy to help."

Now, does ordering from a website without doing at least a few hours of independent research make me an absolute knob? Yes, it does. Did I think it would be more reputable or faster than, say, Shein or Temu? Yes, I did. The only time I've ever ordered something from that took several business days to update on shipping was when it was being shipped from overseas.

I have lodged an enquiry with AusPost to cover all my bases, just in case AusPost do in fact have it and they haven't updated the tracking in the past three days. The only reason I'm bringing this up now and not next week is that I was told when making the original purchase that it would take 2 to 4 business days.

Is there anything I can do besides wait? Am I just waiting on AusPost to update the tracking, or is Green Gadgets hanging me out to dry? If anyone has had issues with them in the past, please let me know.

TLDR; My refurbished phone is either lost in the mail or Green Gadgets is pulling a fast one on me.

Edit to add: The phone is coming from Sydney, and I am Perth-ish based.

myGov access lost — tax return help?

Hi everyone! I’m back in France after a working holiday in Australia, and I can’t log in to myGov because I no longer have my Australian SIM card to receive the verification codes.
Despite several calls and attempts, nothing has worked. I was apparently told I should have sorted this out before leaving Australia…
Has anyone experienced this? Can a tax agent lodge my tax return without me having access to myGov? And what would the consequences be if I don’t lodge my return or lodge it late, given that I’d like to return to Australia in the future?

And If I need a tax agent, could you please recommend a tax agent who could help with my situation, I’d really appreciate it!
Thanks for your help 🙏

How much can people find out about you from a phone number?

Hey guys, I apologise if this a bit of a stupid question but I get approached by guys sometimes asking for my phone number. All my experience has been fine and they are respectful, but I worry I will be giving a person with bad intentions my number.

Is there a lot you can do with someone else's number or am I just paranoid.

I also don't have the heart to give out a wrong number and all the guys have been respectful.

Do you think it's a good thing that schools are going back to pen and paper more?

NSW and Victoria are BOTH reducing the amount of time kids spend on ipads and tech for learning in schools. Same with South Aus.

NSW are capping years 3 and 4 to a MAX of 30 minutes per day. Some schools in adelaide have started capping Years 4 to 6 students to a strict 60 minutes per day. Victorian secondary school students will spend less time on screens and more time using pen and paper under a national-first plan to limit classroom device use to two hours a day.

Do you think this is a good thing? I think it is, kids DON't need ipads to learn maths or subtraction. Results since we've had more tech has not resulted in better results.

Experience with MyAgedCare/Support at Home for families

Hey everyone!
I’m an aged care worker (PCA and nursing student) and I’m researching the system failures in aged care process for families. I’m trying to find out what’s a pain to deal with when trying to get your loved one the extra support they need.

Answer whichever questions you like, even just one or two.
1. Who were you helping (parent, partner, sibling, yourself) and roughly when did you start?

  1. What was the single hardest or most frustrating moment? What happened?

  2. How long did each step take: first contact, assessment, approval, getting services started? Where did you wait the longest?

  3. Who did you turn to for help (government call-line, family, GP, hospital social worker, care finder, advocate, paid adviser, etc)? What was useful and what wasn’t?

  4. Did you pay anyone or anything to help (adviser, case manager, lawyer, accountant, service fees)? What for, and roughly how much?

  5. Is there a point where you wished someone could just take over? What would you have handed over?

  6. If a service had existed to handle that, what would it have needed to do for you to trust it? What would have made you say no?

  7. Anything you want to share that I haven’t asked?

TLDR : Exploring the experiences of people accessing myaged care services? Did they wish someone else could do it for them? If yes, was something helpful they would recommend others?

Mobile coverage in Bali

I’ve purchased an Airalo e-sim for my phone for when I go on holiday to Bali next week (it’s my first time traveling there). Do I still also need to turn on international roaming on my phone with my provider in Australia (Telstra)? Or is it enough just to activate the Airalo e-sim when I arrive in Bali? Thanks in advance 😊

What do you wear when you’re staying home all day or after you came back from work or going out?

Asking because my Australian landlord commented on me wearing pyjama all day it makes me look like a lazy person or a hobo.

Where I am from, not everyone wears a definitive set of pyjama. We wear what is comfortable (but still resemble to pyjama because they can be light and fluffy) and tend to stay in those clothes if we’re not going out or just hanging out at home after going out. Would even go to nearby corner stores for a quick buy.

Not taking it as an offence. Just want to know what or how people usually wear here.

Dishwashing tablet recs

I use to use finish, but then all the natural ones started popping up and made me freak out about what I am washing my dishes with. I tried the Koh ones but tbh they don’t get the job done. Does anyone use lucent globe? Do they actually work or is instagram trying to bamboozle me? Or does anyone have any other recommendations?

I have a bosh dishwasher if that’s of any relevance

Is Alice Springs really as terrible as many people say? I have been offered a lot of money there to work for a couple of months in their mental health unit at Alice Springs Hospital. Personally, I think I will be fine.

As per the title, is it really that bad? Because the agency is offering a lot of money for me to work there just for a couple of months. I think I will be fine. I’ve got a lot of life experience (55 female single.)

Obviously, I’m not going out at night by myself. I don’t drink. I’m going there to work.

What to bring from Canada?

Hey everyone!

I’m travelling from Canada to Australia to visit my in-laws, who are both in their late 50s, and I’d love some suggestions on what to bring them from Canada! My partner’s dad recently had a heart attack, so I’m hoping to bring some thoughtful gifts to show them some love while I’m there. I was thinking of Canadian snacks, treats, little gifts, but thats the usual stuff! I’d especially love ideas for something meaningful for them, as well as anything Australians tend to love receiving from Canada.

What would you want to receive? ❤️🇨🇦🇦🇺

EDIT: i should add they also have diabetes 😅 also leave your favourite sugar free snacks!

Do you consider the Australians in Bali classist?

I know Australians don't care about social status and everyone views each other as equals, but when I was in Bali I felt like many Australians look down on Indonesians without even realizing it.

Hypothetical office chat

My colleagues were talking about a hypothetical question today.

If there were 1000 grapes, and for each one you eat you get $50,000, but there was one in the thousand that would instantly kill you, how many would you eat, if any?

Why don't more Aussies retire to NZ?

I've always wondered why more Australians don't consider retiring to New Zealand. There are plenty of places with a milder climate than much of Australia, smaller populations, BEAUTIFUL scenery, friendlier people, less congestion and what seems like a more laid back lifestyle.

Obviously, NZ has its own downsides, particularly the cost of living. But wouldn't Australians who've spent decades building up their superannuation be able to live comfortably in some of NZ's smaller towns?

I'm curious what actually puts people off. Is it mainly the cost of living, being further from family, healthcare or something else?

In Australia, is it socially acceptable to mediate in a park?

I'm a foreign tourist and have been staying in Brisbane, Australia for a couple weeks. I live far away and just amazed at the natural scenery and the city here. Something that helps me stay calm is meditation and especially outside in the perfect weather now. Would people stare at me if I use a blanket or tarp and meditate on the ground and think I'm a crazy bloke for doing this or is it all right and I'm overthinking?

Are penalties for fare evasion on the train in Sydney immediate

I have a friend who I am wondering if they somehow got scammed. My understanding is that if you get caught for fare evasion they take down your address and send a fine to your house.

My friend is saying he bought a ticket but at the end of his journey got stopped by an inspector who said his Opal said he didn't tap on (he says he did tap on) and then charged his card right then and there for $200.

My friend is not an Australian citizen, could that be why they were charged immediately? I am trying to help them figure out what to do and why this happened and how to fight it since they don't have $200 to spare.

Thanks!
