Culture Japanese gardens?

I watch a lot of old British garden shows (though I live in Florida). Are Brits as obsessed with Japanese gardens as Monty Don would lead me to believe? Was it a fad of the time or is it still a big thing? Why Japanese gardens?

Enfield, Middlesex - Where to go? What to do?

• Upvotes

My Nana moved to California when her family home was bombed in WWII. She was just 19, but never lost her English identity, her accent, or her exceptional manners and polished style. Sadly, she has recently passed, at age 99. Many of our final conversations that were about her childhood and teen years in Enfield, which we had never discussed before.

I feel compelled to resolve the unanswered question of what happened to her home town.

So, we are planning a visit over Christmas. While I'm sure Enfield is a completely different place now, I still want to see where she grew up and try to track down places from her stories. I trust Reddit over Google any day of the week, and I'd be grateful for any good local recommendations on where to stay, restaurants and bars, fun things to do, etc. We should be staying about 2 weeks. We're in our early 30s with no kids, if that helps.

Thanks in advance!

Culture Train/tube etiquette?

Long story short, should I give up my seat on the tube/train for women and elders?

I came to the UK from an Asian country. In my country, it's a given that you would always give up your seat as a man if you see a woman or an old person standing. First time I got on a tube in London, I saw a woman, probably in her 40s, standing right in front of me. I offered her my seat, and to my surprise, she rejected profusely and even seemed somewhat annoyed. I spoke to my friend about it and we came to a hypothesis that me offering her my seat might seem a bit condescending in the UK. Now every time I go on the tube, I never offer my seat to anyone anymore, but honestly it still feels uncomfortable sometimes sitting when there's a woman standing right in front of me.

Sorry if my English isn't the best, I'm curious as to what the appropriate etiquette is in the UK.

Did anyone else think the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 felt a little like a preemptive funeral instead of a celebration?

I remember watching the festivities and comparing them to the Diamond a decade earlier and couldn’t help but notice the difference in the mood.

I need a reputable newspaper; do you have suggestions?

I live in the United States but like to read international news to get their perspective. I had explored the Daily Mail but from comments it seems they have a negative reputation for inaccurate or biased stories.

I want to find a solid, reliable online newspaper or news site. I’d prefer to avoid outlets that lean heavily into sensationalism or extreme political bias, and instead find journalism focused on objective facts and thorough reporting.  What are your go-to sources for high-quality UK news? I'm open to both free sites and those with a reasonable paywall if the journalism genuinely warrants it.

I am also exploring other areas and am considering the Irish Independent because so far, I find their free stories interesting.  I also used to watch NHK Newsline, from Japan, which is no longer available on our PBS station. Thank you.

Food/Drink Alright I need answers?

What is with the jellied eel? Who eats it? And why? Tradition? Does it taste good? Genuinely curious. Im a savory, gravy, salty type of eater and I’ve been in the uk once. The food was great. The Sunday roast was one of the best meals I’ve ever had, especially at 11am or whatever time we ate. But why the eels? I’m intrigued enough to try it next time we are there but would like to know what I’m getting into

What is Your Nation's Most Colourful Bird?

I've always loved hummingbirds and recently I put out a hummingbird feeder which has been a great success.

Not every nation is lucky enough to have native hummingbirds, which leads to the question: what bird in your nation is equally colourful? Do you enjoy watching them? Have you ever set out a feeder?

Let us know about your relationship with our feathered friends!

To all the Brits reading this i wanna know more of your life as a cat owner. Namely:

- how many cats you have
- how long have you had your cat
- what do you do to keep your cat happy and healthy

Culture What's a common piece of American professional advice that doesn't apply to the UK?

I assume that much, possibly most of the professional advice flying around within the Anglosphere is of US origin, be it general or industry -specific. However, in the UK there's certainly rules, regulations, standard practices, etc., that differ significantly. Or there's cultural reasons.

As an example of the latter, in America it's commonly taught to "learn how to give a firm no" when your boss or colleagues want something unfeasible from you, or when you're stretched too thin to accommodate them. My wife is from Italy. She said that's bad advice there. They'll just get agitated and double down, leaning on you all the harder. Instead, you're supposed to creatively weasel your way out of it.

What about in the UK? What's something you came across, or that an American said to you, that simply wasn't applicable?

Socio-economic Do UK shops take orders from social media platforms IG/FB/Tiktok/WA?

I am asking this to know how do uk shops take delivery orders. I see many restaurants/ retail businesses in many countries shifted completely to take their orders via DMs or WA instead of dedicated websites or apps, I am curious to know how is it going in the Uk?

Culture How do you feel about judge and barrister wigs?

I’m an American who watches a lot of British TV and the wigs in the courtrooms look very silly to me. I mean no disrespect, but it makes everyone look a lot less dignified to me. Ironically I am from the country with the least dignified government, run by clowns🤡(to put it nicely), but I’m still curious about how British people feel about these wigs.

Where to buy a Burberry Coast?

I happen to be in London/Oxford area, maybe including Bicester, soon and wanted to buy my wife a Burberry. She is usually into more classic styles so I assume it will be one of the classic city looks.

Are there any recommendations where to buy, either in terms of price or selection?

Other What sharks are found off the coast of the UK?

l've always been a wildlife enthusiast with a particular interest in marine life.

If you don't mind me asking, what are some species of sharks that can found in the waters off the coast of the UK? Big small it doesn't matter. And have you encountered these sharks before?

Food/Drink (German) Is there a pub in Whitby that is still open past 1 am?

Hey guys. A few days ago I posted asking where my best friend and I could go on holiday in the UK (we wanted a smaller town on the coast). Most people actually suggested Whitby, and from the pictures we’ve seen we really like it too. Now we’re just wondering if there are any pubs in Whitby that stay open later than 1 am? Because I checked a few on Google Maps and couldn’t find any.
So that’s also why I’m asking: Is that just normal in the UK and will it be the same in other towns?
Or are the times on Google Maps simply inaccurate and the pubs sometimes stay open longer depending on the mood?
Sorry for asking such questions, but I really have no idea how these things work in the UK.
Would be glad if some people could help us out!

Education Waving at Firemen Age Limit?

So saw a TikTok of a guy listing things you shouldn’t be doing as an adult man, on was asking Lorry Drivers to honk their horn. Firstly it’s fun and I will continue ie to do this.

The main question is as a kid it’s socially acceptable to wave at firemen as it’s pure and wholesome, I am assuming as an elderly person you can also get away with waving at them as it’s also sweet and innocent.

My question what is the cut off age can I no longer wave at firemen? And what age can I start waving at them again? Or does it not matter? And do Firemen appreciate people waving of all ages?

Food/Drink Folk with small kitchens - what worktop appliances do you have?

I have a kettle, slow cooker, coffee machine, and nutribullet. That's it. My kitchen is tiny - four plug sockets - so we have had to choose (with some trial and error) which appliances we actually use because we don't have the space for a lot.

I guess it's unusual not to have a toaster and microwave (?), and I suppose most people have an air fryer, but I put toast under the grill, I re-heat on hobs, and I LOVE my slow cooker. Hated the air fryer (which briefly lived where my slow cooker is)

We mainly eat curries, stews, ragu etc, sloppy slow-cooker stuff. We I love tea and coffee, and I blitz all sorts in the bullet.

If I had the space for one more, I'd have a toaster.

Just wondered what other folk who have tiny kitchens have? And do you miss anything? What would you have if you had the space?

What should I do in the UK?

I'm from Brazil and recently I've passed a scholarship exam. I'll be going to the UK (but I don't know yet which country I'll staying in) from January until early April.

What should I do in the UK? Places to visit, nice restaurants, etc.

And the most importantly thing; What do British people eat in a typical day?
