Politics & Racism After a few years abroad in Europe, it’s time to go. The racism got to me.

I’ve been abroad living in various European countries for a few years. I don’t want to give specifics where, mainly because the hate and racism is basically everywhere. But I’m leaving next month. The blatant racism and more subtle microaggressions is exhausting. I can’t do it anymore. I get it from all ages and genders. In large and capital cities too that claim to be “diverse”. The anti-Asian racism is normalized and even celebrated. It has torn me up in many ways.

I’m not posting this in any expat or travel sub because I know I’ll be attacked… “yeah but XYZ” “You’re too sensitive” “The politics are different. Those comments aren’t offensive like you think they are.” “just ignore it”

It’s tough as I saw myself making my life here. But it got hard and hard to do that dealing with horrible and closed minded people.

I guess I feel sad. Like I’m giving up. Maybe I’ll regret it. Right now though I’m TIRED of fearing to exist.

I wonder if the demonization of immigrants specifically Indian immigrants by the current administration is leading to such violent tendencies being unleashed in impressionable youth.

Politics & Racism People don’t give a fuck

I work at an R1 institution for context. A place where you can assume the vast majority of people are highly educated. A few weeks ago, somebody (non-Asian, thank god) had expressed his opinion that Asian people are not people of color during an event.

When I tell you that not a SINGLE person in the room gave a single shit about what he said or took it seriously, I mean it. Some people even agreed.

Within the first two months of starting my work at this institution, somebody on the street had yelled at me to (and I quote) “open your eyes, you fucking chink”. It took me telling this person about this instance for him to recoil and (hopefully) think about what he just said. And I could have gone on and on about the numerous and monthly instances of blatant racism I experience as an AA. This was not just a one-off event.

Whether we, as Americans, want to admit it or not, Asian Americans just like other Americans of color grow up shaped by racism. Our childhood, adult lives, and our outcomes are shaped by racism. That’s simply how it is for POC. To tell an AA that we are not POC is equivalent to telling us that our lives do not matter. If I was not a person of color, I wouldn’t even have a childhood given racism makes up about 60-70% of my earliest memories and has heavily influenced who I am as an adult.

So, the American education system doesn’t give a fuck about us given the context. White people obviously don’t give a fuck about us (I don’t have to explain this one). Other POC sadly don’t give a fuck about us. American media CLEARLY doesn’t give a fuck about us. So who actually cares? When do AA stand together as a community and declare idealogical war? I’m so sick and tired of having to fight these battles.

Questions & Discussion I’m curious what the East Asian diasporas think about other East Asians.

I’m from Korea. And there is always people in my country that dislikes China and Japan due to our history and politics. I personally met good people in both countries and I am really into their culture so I actually really like them. I always had an impression that East Asian diasporas especially those living in the western countries had more connection and solidarity than us asians living in Asia bc they have discrimination together for being Asian. But I actually saw some other Asian Americans acting hostile to other Asian groups. It makes me curious, what do you guys actually think about other East Asian diasporas?

Questions & Discussion Considering moving from Orange County, CA to Houston, TX - would appreciate opinions

I'm in late stage interviews with a company in Houston and wanted to get an idea from other Asian Americans in the area what it's like to live and raise a family out there.

My wife and I are both second gen Taiwanese Americans and were looking try to find Mandarin immersion schools and the options seem a bit limited.

For anyone who's made the move to or from Houston, any thoughts, suggestions, culture shock moments? Concerns about politics?

Politics & Racism Potential racism behavior towards Asian customer in Costco

So my family was in Costco today in SGV, she picked a cloth and put it back, a Latina Costco worker pulled it away right after she put it down, full of disrespect, and my family heard that Latina was saying "disgusting" to her coworker.

And later on this Latina was acting guilty or something because my family stay around and watching her, she accused my family taking pictures of her, and she called security over.

My family later went to file complaint, and her manager wasn't willing to give out her name. It seems they're all cover it up for their coworkers.

I wonder anyone work in Costco? Is it possible they can cover it up for their coworkers? AI says they might cover it up for their own people, so you need to file complaint from other way around.

I have experienced similar disrespectful and hostile behavior only towards Asian in this Costco, too.

I want to file a complaint to Costco and demand for apology and explanation, is there anything I should look out for?

My family said these Costco workers were trying accuse her taking pictures without consent and kick her out, it feels like they're trying reverse the situation and cover up for their people on disrespecting Asian customer behavior, I'd like to know if there's anyway I get pass these people and still file complaint to Costco headquarter or something to expose them?

SGV is one of the largest Asian communities, I don't think it's acceptable for other ethnicities doing this to your Asian family.

News/Current Events The curious case of Alexandr Wang and Muse AI

So I wrote a brief history of Alexendr Wang (founder of Scale AI and chief AI officer at META).

As you may know META has recently released MUSE AI which has been a success so far. For those who are not familiar it is Meta’s personal AI agent. Before Muse, Meta seemed to be lagging in the AI race, but this recent success is a testament to Wang’s vision and execution.

A few business owner friends of mine have already put Muse to work, using it to autonomously negotiate lower insurance premiums and design complete websites. I’m planning to test it out myself soon to handle remortgaging one of my rental properties.

I wonder if anyone else have tried it (or other personal AI agents)?

Given that Wang is still only in his late twenties, it’s wild to think what he’ll build across the rest of his career.

I am currently watching this podcast which I thought was interesting. Definitely watch this space!!!

Questions & Discussion Does anyone else in their mid-to-late 20s feel like they’re falling behind in life?

Hi everyone :) I'm a 26-year-old Korean American, and I've been thinking a lot about my future lately.

I'm currently attending university, studying audio engineering, while working part-time and pursuing a career as a music producer.

I've been working at my part-time job for several years now, and sometimes I catch myself wondering how much longer I'll have to keep doing this before I can make a living doing what I actually love. I also worry about my grades because I really don't want to mess up my education.

To be clear, my goal isn't necessarily to become a famous music producer or make it big in the industry. Of course, that would be amazing, but honestly, I'd be more than happy just being able to make a stable living through music, whether that's producing, mixing, teaching music production, doing session work, or combining different sources of income.

Most of the time, I'm doing okay and genuinely enjoy making music. But every now and then, I start comparing myself to people my age who seem to have already established their careers or become financially independent.

Sometimes those thoughts make me feel anxious and overwhelmed, to the point where I almost feel like crying.

I grew up in Korea before moving to the U.S., and I sometimes wonder if part of this pressure comes from the expectations around age and success that I grew up with. I feel like there's often this idea that you're supposed to reach certain milestones by a certain age, whether that's graduating, finding a stable job, or becoming financially independent.

I know everyone has their own path and moves at their own pace. I understand that logically, but emotionally, it's a lot harder to accept. Even though I know comparing myself to others isn't helpful, I still find myself doing it sometimes, and I can't help but wonder if I'm falling behind.

I guess what I'm struggling with is the gap between where I am right now and where I want to be in life.

I'm curious if any other Asian Americans have experienced something similar, especially those who grew up in immigrant families, moved to the U.S. later in life, or pursued creative careers or less traditional paths.

How did you deal with comparing yourself to others, feeling behind in life, and being uncertain about your future?

I'd really appreciate hearing your experiences or advice. Thanks for reading :)

Questions & Discussion Anyone else struggle with traditional Korean parents and dating?

I'm Korean American and the eldest daughter in my family, and I've been struggling with something lately that I don't really have many people I can talk to about.

I'm dating a French man who has a child. It's still a fairly new relationship (8 months), so obviously I don't know what will happen in the future, but we love each other a lot and I really want to see where it goes.

The hard part is my parents are pretty traditional Korean parents. In their eyes, I think they want me to marry someone who's very financially established, has no previous relationship or children, and can provide a really comfortable life. I can understand wanting those things for me, but I also feel like real life and relationships aren't always that simple.

Sometimes I get in my head about what they'll think and whether I'm being selfish by choosing someone who doesn't necessarily fit what they imagined for their daughter. I'm not saying money and stability don't matter, because they do, especially when a child is involved. I just don't want to make decisions about my life based entirely on what other people think I should want.

I feel like I can't really talk about this openly because people either tell me to follow my heart and ignore my parents, or they agree with my parents that I should find someone without these complications. I wish I could talk to people who understand both sides without feeling like I have to defend either one.

Has anyone else dealt with something similar? Especially if you grew up in a traditional Asian household, were the eldest daughter, or dated someone who already had a child?

How did you deal with the guilt and the fear of disappointing your parents? Did you ever get to a point where you could make your own choices without constantly worrying about their opinions?

I know I'm still figuring things out and I'm not rushing into marriage or anything. I just really care about this person, and sometimes I feel lonely trying to navigate all of this.

Would love to hear your experiences, even if things didn't work out the way you hoped. I could really use some honest advice from people who have been through it.

Questions & Discussion Food - I Missed When It Was Cheap

So this thread is a bit of a rant and to see if others feel this way as well. But growing up, I lived in the LA area, specifically near SGV. Still do.

Man my parents used to take me out to eat like weekly and it was always to some Chinese restaurant or Vietnamese. Occasionally other Asian cuisines as well. And you know what kid me wanted. McDonald's lol. Not even In-N-Out. McDonalds. I wanted my burger, fries and toy.

Really missed the old days. Not because it was old but because it was so much cheaper. Man I would be very happy now making the money I make as a software engineer and still eating those same prices.

But authentic Asian food has gotten popular. And you know, supply and demand. This is great for the people who work at these restaurants and they deserve it. They have been underpaid for so long for their cuisine and I'm glad they are getting the recognition they deserve. But man... that cheap high quality authentic food... smh. Pray for me lol
