Welcome to Art Marketing Talk!

Hi all who join!

I created this sub for artists to talk about social media, since a lot of the artist centered subs understandably don't want social media questions on their subs, and subs focused on Instagram are overrun by AI and don't serve artists well. This is the place for artists to talk about social media, marketing, strategy, and more!

Social media and marketing can be harsh for artists and creatives, who are often not content creators. But unfortunately we are forced to do it because of the current algorithm driven world. Like it or not we have to adapt, but we don't have to struggle alone, and so lets help each other succeed!

Ask questions, request critiques, share tips, etc. More successful artists please stick around to help newbies, and newbies network and help each other grow.

I'm hoping this space turns into a cozy little community for all kinds of artists to help each other out and strategize. Let's keep it wholesome and collaborative, please treat each other with respect and kindness.

Also, this is my first time creating or modding a sub so please help me out with suggestions and feedback! I want this sub to serve the community so voice your thoughts if you have them.

I am a traditional painter, heavily old master inspired and i have loads of works sat in storage. I originally trained as an artist as a career but during depressed i put it down and havnt picked it up in a while. lots of people around me ask why i don't sell my pieces and i guess i just dont know how or where to start. i'm aware a lot has changed since covid, what would you recommend for me to sell my paintings nowadays?

Publishing digital art as an art book?

I figure part of the problem of selling anything digital is that people like buying stuff they can hold and own (or hoard). Has anybody here tried selling their work as books? I have a lot of art ideas coming out of my childhood trauma, which I think could be compiled into quite an interesting/educational/cathartic volume. They'd be individual pieces, but would still tell a fairly clear story.

Why can't I sell commissions? (Need pricing/marketing advice)

Hello! I’m Luna. I’m quite lost when it comes to selling commissions lately. I don't know if it's my pricing, or if my art simply isn't reaching the right audience... Could you give me some honest advice?

My prices currently range from $40 (for flat color icons) to $100+ (for full render fantasy illustrations).

Thank you so much in advance! I really appreciate any feedback on whether my pricing matches my quality or how to reach the right buyers.

If i told u that I've made these by hand, would you be willing to purchase them? And how much would you be willing to pay for these?

( I am not actually selling these artworks, i just want to know if people are interested in buying such artworks or not, so please be honest while answering)

Looking for honest feedback on my art website from people who understand art marketing

Hey everyone! I'm helping my partner with the marketing side of his art business, and I've been working on his website and trying to figure out how to better present his work online. I'd really appreciate some honest feedback from people who have experience with art marketing, selling original artwork, or building an audience as an artist.

I'm especially curious about the overall presentation of the website, whether it feels professional, how easy it is to navigate, and whether anything might be discouraging potential buyers from reaching out or making a purchase.

I'm still learning the marketing side of things, so I'm open to constructive criticism! I'd rather hear what isn't working than just be told it looks good.

Would anyone be willing to take a look and share their thoughts? I'd be happy to provide the link in the comments or through a message if that's preferred.

Thanks in advance! I really appreciate any advice from people who've been through this themselves.

Looking for honest feedback on my art page on Instagram

Hey everyone! This year I decided to start showing my process and general progress on Instagram as part of my art portfolio. I'm doing my marketing all alone and would appreciate an outsider view on how my page is perceived. What I should (or shouldn't do) more.

My challenge is trying to figure out a good balance between showing my fine art, exhibition content, directed mostly to collectors and people interested in deeper discussions around the symbolic meaning of art AND my everyday process and artist journey (aka studio work, applying to open calls, making art for smaller projects, sketchbook, experimenting, etc.). I am afraid these two do not compliment each other and make my page visually confusing as to what I am doing.

Here is my Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/arpiart_de/

IG stats: I have started actively posting on Instagram in May-June this year. Now I have 1100 + followers, among which other artists but also galleries, art collectors and obv. friends and family. I haven't had any video or post gone viral, so the numbers have been growing slowly but steadily. And since I am doing a lot, I have also been experimenting with various content types, ideas, visual elements to see what works and what not.

I have a portfolio website (no shop) where I can share more text and details about individual works and series (see "Japan Memories"): www.arpiart.de

That being said, I'm still learning the social media side of things, so I'm open to constructive criticism! Thanks in advance! I really appreciate you taking time to share your thoughts and advice!

Having lots of styles helps.

I have a ton of styles(I can't even post them all). This has 100% helped me with commissions. All these are examples of comms that sold or the thing that sold them.

The problem has never been having a bunch of styles. It's being able to use them when you need to.

You don't need to chase the market if you cover half of it. These all fluctuate in how many sell for each style.

I have tried lots of types of comms as well. Character art, adopts, gacha adopts, ych, character design, animation, 3d modeling.

Extra little tip: don't sell the best of your ability, especially if you are a perfectionist. None of this is my very best. I used to try selling my best. I got burnt out, stressed out and felt like I always had to meet a certain bar of quality. I broke down crying multiple times over commissions. They also barely sold. I stepped back and started with the 3rd example. Just a silly little ych guy. It sold, I added more stuff. Those sold too. Not all my ideas sold but a lot of them did. I haven't felt stressed since I made that change and I sell so much more.

Products ideas for art photographers

I have to say that I've not discovered a truly great product aside from prints that does really well as an art photographer. Mugs do OK. Sometimes cards do well. I inquired with my audience about t-shirts once and got no real interest there, even though I think there are some possibilities. But wondering if others have any proven products that could have art photos applied to it to sell?

My husband's art is great, but no sales at all

Hi yall,

I am trying to help my husband go full time with art seeing he has been a stay at home dad for a few years while I work in the medical field. I've read a ton of business/marketing books and watched a lot of videos trying to do some of their suggestions. He has talent beyond measure and makes some amazing paintings. He set up a professional website, has some social media (but nobody follows despite our best effort), created a email newsletter (that only a handful of people will join despite our best efforts), gone to vendor shows (and won awards but no sales), and are going to be shown in a gallery. All this yet we have only had like two sales total... for the year. I am dumbfounded. I am open to any advice on how to improve our sales as we've spent a good bit on vendor supplies, website costs etc and without sales its becoming a money pit. It'd crush his soul to give up on art seeing he already delayed it a bit for our kids, but we are getting more and more debt every month to the point we may have no choice. What are we doing wrong? Sorry for the desperation tone but truly it feels so defeating.

Advice for actual career potential??

I wanna have my own business. I think everyone does at this point lol. I do/did pixel art and can be pretty good I'd think??? (Unless you got inputs??) But I dunno how to make it a thing since these are standalone and when i tried an Etsy for mini Kirby x Pokémon keychains & magnets, it barely did a thing and it was the only thing. I tried South park ones like of the anime episode but nothing. Pride Ailms for strength in pride during pride month of multiple pride flags. Nothing. I really WANNA make something for art but I keep being too distracted with crochet, I'm sad about the perler, discouraged from chocolatiering due to the economy and market nowadays with a cottage food law truffle thing, polymer clay I dunno if it'll sell what I'd make super super mini, I like to make mini things but I can't seem to make em stick to earring backs I got, I just don't know where to go to ask this kinda advice please??

Patreon-only digital art?

Has anybody tried building a following using only Patreon or a similar service? So basically people are paying a small amount per piece to follow you. I'd like to share my work, but I'm sick of big tech companies stealing everything for their AI. It seems unlikely that they would subscribe to a Patreon account to get more content when their users are already feeding them zetabytes of it every day.

I don't care much about having a large following, just that the option is there if somebody wants to take it.

Is my art too niche to garner further attention? It it worth being consumable if I just need to get paid? NSFW

Are there places to sell where genitals are more encouraged and emphasis on “Fine Art” is not present? I create a lot of gore and genital amalgamations and- folks appreciate or enjoy my pieces if their responses in person are to be believed. This piece is a relatively tame one in comparison.

I suppose the question becomes: Do I waste time becoming more consumable for a modern market or is there a market that has yet to see my niche that wants genitals and blood- if so, where?

I’m an artist and writer who just today launched this passion project I’ve been developing for the last year. It’s the very first issue and I have never been comfortable with marketing.

I’ve explained the concept across social media but it’s hard to know the how, where, when and what to do to effectively get it seen by people who care about a combination of art, stories, history and supernatural elements. What would you suggest?

how do you protect your art on social media?

Hello I am a artist and I want to start positing my work on social media( insta, tiktok, youtube) I wanted to ask artist who do post on social media big or small following how do you protect your media from being stolen by ai or other accounts that are stealing a story that you cam up with who do have probably bigger fan base than you. Are there any precautions that you learned to take or do if so what are they. From what i research it just seems like you post it its your content and you cant stop people from stealing it so you just have to be detective trying to find people who steal it and ask them to stop hoping that they do and document when you either make or post something?
