Graftaholics Anonymous
Accessability Transcription:
Various images of my in progress grafting section of the garden.
Various now un bandaged grafts. Lots of new grafts I just did this morning.
I had to redo a few of them. But most have worked so far.
What I have realized is my preffered method is to alive them in half and then graft. Such that you get a sort of psuedo half log T shape on top.
This makes it so you can get 2 scions per cutting.
But the main reason. Is because the flat short shape makes it way easier to apply strong pressure. Way easier to remove the bandages without accidently yanking the graft off. And provides more surface area to bond.
I'm not gonna go back and change the initial grafts to my now prefered style. Gonna let it ride.
But definitely moving forward this is how I'm gonna do all my grafts.
As you can see. Basically all of the new currently bandaged plants were done this way.

Sweet potato harvest
Skeptical on growing veggies in Phoenix as it’s my first 8months with this hobby. 1 sweet potato slip around July 1-5 and ran the vine half way around the pot. Makes sense with the growth size of potato’s from large to small. 15 gallon grow bag. 95days of growth. Could’ve gone a couple weeks more but weather predicted rain. Happy with results. GH hydro nutrients and an occasional cal-mag and “super thrive” supplement. Not sure if it’s worth it to keep growing next year?

How's that for healthy soil?

help identifying a problem! and also identifying this plant
i think it must be some kind of fungus, green fuzzy stuff growing on a flowering shrub.
i don’t know what the shrub is, it’s been in the yard for over 20 years and i don’t think it would survive being cut down.
we tried some kind of disease spray (fungi and disease control something like that) but it doesn’t seem to have had an effect.
if anyone can identify the pest that would be great! also i would love to know what the plant is if anyone knows.

Anyone grow Triple Time Mango or Fuerte Avocado in the super hot parts of AZ (i.e. Phoenix, Yuma, Lake Havasu). If so, how did they do?

You asked for updates on the grafts. I'm trying to do it right and not undo the wrap until they have had a full 2 weeks to heal. But it's gonna rain for several days. So I improvised.

My Hakurei have arrived!
I have been waiting months for some roselle hibiscus seeds, and true leaf finally has them in stock!
I won’t start the roselle until Decemberish, but the other seeds I’ll start today. I want to take advantage of the new moon coming up on the 10th. Hakurei turnips are my favorite turnips, and arugula is one of my favorite greens. Of course we need celery for our stocks, and they’ll be accompanied by some delicious turnips.

The bane of my existence scarlet spiderling
This plant is a bitch if it shows up in your yard, not only does it grow very fast it seeds like crazy as well as having a fat tuber that if you dont get it will just grow back over and over and if you see it has a thinned out spot right before getting to the stem and leaves meaning it tears so easily they are sticky as well which is a texture nightmare

Seeking seeds for New Mexican Locust
Heyo, Texas gardener here seeking seeds for Robinia neomexicana, New Mexican Locust, a relative of black locust with pink blossoms that is native to a few locales across New Mexico and Arizona. Unfortunately, I can't find these seeds available from any vendors but I know that trees of this family produce a copious amount of seed pods in the fall and I was hoping someone might have access to a mature tree and be willing to send me a few seeds.

Year round flowers
I saw this on Pinterest as I was looking for pollinator plants and liked the idea but of course these sorts of things aren’t made for Arizona. If you were going to plant a garden that bloomed year round here which plants would you choose?

What’s growing in my planter?
Hello wonderful AZ gardeners :) Only posting because I couldn’t find any answers as to what this plant is. It’s a vine that has been here since I moved in 2 years ago. At first, I thought it was dead, but after I cleared all of the dead growth back it started growing really quickly. I haven’t watered it at all, and it gets around 8-9 hours of direct sun where it’s currently at and it thrives. Occasional small dime-sized purple flowers pop up and last season I saw small pea pod looking pods growing. Is it a legume of some sort? Thanks in advance!

Black aphids
I’m at my wits end with black aphids on my cucumbers. What are you guys using? Insecticidal soap isn’t doing the trick.
