Wife’s father memorial

Hello, my wife’s father passed away and she is very religious. She even has prayers in Aramaic. I am not super religious but want to get her a gift that will be meaningful for her. I bought a custom pendant through a silversmith. Is it accurate to engrave “ABBA” (father) on the back?

A Handbook of Neo-Aramaic

The Handbook of Neo-Aramaic aims to provide an introduction to, and details of the complex world of Neo-Aramaic. This large family of endangered Neo-Semitic languages is (or until recently was spoken by Jewish, Christian and Mandaean minorities in parts of the Middle East. Most members of these communities now live in various diasporas.
Following a series of general chapters dealing with historical background, classification, salient linguistic features, Neo-Semitic context, contact languages (Kurdish, etc.), manuscripts and printed texts, Neo-Aramaic in the media etc., the book presents grammatical sketches of 15 different Neo-Aramaic dialects (some never described before), followed by a series of maps, illustrations, and a bibliography.
The book hopes to provide material of interest both to the beginner and the more advanced specialist.

The Neo-Aramaic Oral Heritage of the Jews of Zakho

Thumbnail openbookpublishers.com

In 1951, the secluded Neo-Aramaic-speaking Jewish community of Zakho migrated collectively to Israel. It carried with it its unique language, culture and customs, many of which bore resemblance to those found in classical rabbinic literature. Like others in Kurdistan, for example, the Jews of Zakho retained a vibrant tradition of creating and performing songs based on embellishing biblical stories with Aggadic traditions.

Despite the recent growth of scholarly interest into Neo-Aramaic communities, however, studies have to this point almost exclusively focused on the linguistic analysis of their critically endangered dialects and little attention has been paid to the sociological, historical and literary analysis of the cultural output of the diverse and isolated Neo-Aramaic communities of Kurdistan. In this innovative book, Oz Aloni seeks to redress this balance.

Aloni focuses on three genres of the Zakho community’s oral heritage: the proverb, the enriched biblical narrative and the folktale. Each chapter draws on the authors’ own fieldwork among members of the Zakho community now living in Jerusalem. He examines the proverb in its performative context, the rewritten biblical epic narrative of Ruth, Naomi and King David, and a folktale with the unusual theme of magical gender transformation. Insightfully breaking down these examples with analysis drawn from a variety of conceptual fields, Aloni succeeds in his mission to put the speakers of the language and their culture on equal footing with their speech.

I made a short film about Zenobia narrated entirely in reconstructed Palmyrene Aramaic — I’d love feedback from ancient-language enthusiasts.

How are the New Testament uses of Aramaic translated/transliterated as?

Do they just put the same thing in modern Aramaic, do they just keep it the same to avoid annoyance or do they do something different entirely?

Jewish Aramaic languages vs. modern Aramaic languages

So I’m Jewish and pretty religious so I use Aramaic almost daily, mostly in prayer and it made me wonder how much can native speakers of modern Aramaic languages/dialects can understand the Aramaic texts we use, wether it be from the Talmud, prayers (I’m not sure which dialects are used for prayers, it could be a combination of a few) or Targumic, once transliterated into the Syriac script.

Has anyone tried/researched it?
If so, where can I see the answer?

Authentic Aramaic translation of 2 Peter

Are there any sources of 2 Peter Epistle from the NT in Aramaic. Not a vague website with Aramaic translations , but Genuine, Historical translations of the Epistle that's scholarly acknowledged or Historically relevant. The older the source, the better it would be. But anything is appreciated. A translation in Galilean Aramaic is even more appreciated.

-Thank you

Is it wrong for someone to call their daughter Aramea if they are not of Aramaic origin/do not have those roots?

Hello everyone, I am just wondering whether it would be culturally inappropriate to do this. I find the name and ancient historical context of this name beautiful and I also very much like that it is unique but wouldn't like to cause offence. Thank you

Source on Jewish Babylonian Aramaic?

There is a claim on Wikipedia (obviously) that Jewish Babylonian Aramaic survived in Iraq until ~1200BCE. Does anyone have any source for this? i.e. JBA writings from the 12th Century. I can't find anything that backs up this claim.

Any reliable resources online to learn western neo aramaic?

I've been wanting to learn this language for so long, but the resources I found online were either about Syriac (which is a different dialect from the one I want to learn), or just really obscure, so I'm wondering if anyone has attempted to learn it here
