MOD APPROVED POST ✅️ Reminders and Community Goals

Post image
418 Upvotes

Enjoy the meme, lol! Tis handmade ✨️

Hey everyone! We want to thank everyone who's participated in our community this past month for the engaging posts, thoughtful answers, and (overall) incredibly respectful conduct. It's been nice to watch the community come together so helpfully for so many people! That said, there have been a few incidents that have drawn some attention, and we wanted to go over a few things and hear input from you all.

App/Website promotion

For starters, we've had many people reaching out to our team about promoting their fishkeeping apps or websites. While we understand that you're trying to reach out to a community that will use them, we cannot endorse apps or websites on this subreddit when they are self promoted. There are a number of safety issues in doing so, and being a part of an app store does not eliminate those risks. In addition, we have to take into account that AI bots pull massive amounts of information from reddit. When it does, it may list our subreddit as a source for your application's information, which is an obvious issue as we have no way of vetting an entire app/website for it's accuracy. That could end up misleading people who trust us as a source.

Mutual Respect

A community is built on mutual respect, both of your peers and between authority figures. Reporting an automod comment is disrespectful, and downright unhelpful. If you believe an action was taken unfairly or accidentally, please message us with a link to the message and ask us why we took the action! We are more than happy to explain the reasoning behind every action we take and admit when we are wrong.

Being disrespectful towards a poster's pets, situation, and age is also becoming an increasing problem. We've also seen advice being given on legal matters and personal health. This is an aquarium subreddit. We will remove any and all comments pertaining to subjects not in that realm of knowledge. We will remove any unproductive or hateful comments. WE WILL REMOVE ANY COMMENTS THAT ARE HARRASSING MINORS. This includes but is not limited to telling them they are abusers for being unable to correct a bad situation, repeatedly suggesting options they are not financially capable of, or suggesting they start fights with parents or guardians.

Community Goals

Lastly we want to remind people of the goal of this community- for aquarists young and old, new and experienced, of nanos to monsters, to come together and share knowledge, fun moments, show off, or help each other. You've been so fantastic at this! As a mod team we want to help you feel comfortable and safe enough to share these things. We pose a question to you, if you want to answer- what are you looking for in this community? Knowing your goals can help us align the subreddit with them and grow even more.

Swim safe out there folks!

Discussion The r/aquarium wiki is now live!

After a lot of work behind the scenes, we’ve finally enabled the r/aquarium wiki!

It’s definitely still a work in progress, so don’t be surprised if you click on a link and it doesn’t go anywhere yet. Some of the pages listed on the index are planned but haven’t been published yet. The pages that are currently published are available to view and use.

We’ll be continuing to add pages and expand the wiki over time, with the goal of creating a helpful resource for both new and experienced fishkeepers.

And this is where we’d really appreciate some community input!

If you read through any of the published pages and:

- Disagree with something

- Think something needs more explanation

- Notice something we should correct

- Think we’re missing important information

- Have a topic you think should be added

Please let us know here in the comments! We want the wiki to be useful to the community, and feedback from other fishkeepers is a big part of making that happen.

You can check out the Wiki here.

There’s still plenty left to build, but we’re excited to finally have it available!

Help Just lost my year old tank in 5 minutes

I’ve had a tank with a betta, pleco, 4 rice fish, 2 corydoras and two neon tetras and all died today. I’ve been dealing with an ammonia problem and went to a local fish store for some tips, he recommended me an “aqua essential” solution for the tank to lower the levels. I poured in in a line in my 20 gallon tank and 5 minutes later all of the fish began swimming erratically then I found them belly up. Please tell me what I did wrong. I tested the water and the ammonia levels dropped and everything is normal

Really love the look of these guys and thinking about putting them in my new tank, which is cycling rn.

Was wondering for sny owners how their temperament is? Would they get along with ottos?

How many do you have in your tank?

Do they nip at plants?

Help Hardscape too heavy?

Post image

I'm setting up a couple new tanks in my basement as I've quickly become an addict since picking up the hobby. My hardscaping in my other tanks are all driftwood or ceramic. My question is, can I over do it with the rock hardscaping? Am I risking damaging or cracking my tank? The one on the left is my concern (29 gallon aqueon).

Can I feed my squeaker cat and ropefish very small chunks of fresh cut swordfish. I caught the swordfish yesterday and I think it would be good food for my two larger fish. I cleaned it up nice and rinsed it well. Cut into quarter inch chunks. I think my keyhole cichlids would like it as well.

Discussion Advice? What tank for my son?

• Upvotes

I was a very experienced aquarium keeper 15 years ago. Freshwater planted and brackish tanks generally. But got out of it because of a lot of moves.

My son wants a tank and we are in an established house we own.

I see fluval makes some cool packages. Buy a package from elsewhere? Or would it be better to assemble my own? I’m thinking 10-20 gallons.

This is in Canada. My budget is $300. Maybe more for a compelling reason.

Advice?

Illness/Injury What is happening to my Danios?

Post image

Almost 6 months old tank ( stable in water condition (Ph at 7, nitrate/nitrite/ammonia 0 [ was cycled ] , but a bit high on hardness since our water is super spicy here ) with now something that seem to be attacking the fins and overall wellness of my danios ( redness at base of tail fins, frail tail fins, lost of body score and equilibrium). I have a 30gal tank with 12 Danios, 9 neon tetras, 4 platies, 2 horsefaces loaches, 2 boneros loaches and shrimps/snails. Everyone seems fine but my zebras are falling like flies for the last 3 days. No big changes were made in my tanks, except I'm now using filtered water to reduce hardness when I'm topping the tank. My male platy has for sure anger issues, but they are together since the beginning and Ive never had this issue. Is it Fin Rot? Fighting wounds? I will take any advise on treatments/ way of action. The sick ones are now in my hospital tank with Kanaplex and methylene blue treatment. Thank you for your help!

Help Nitrogen Cycle question

I’ve had this tank going for a month now I think. I feel like my cycle has stalled or something. At one point last week I had nitrates over 40 ppm, so I did a 50% water change. Nitrites have shot back up but nitrates staying steady. Any ideas what’s going on?

Water temp is 74 degrees
I have snails inside for now

I finally bit the bullet and decided to order some of my favorite species online. Nowhere even had these except IT who only had 6 unsexed 2-3”. I received 3 M+F each and they look awesome. The males got their reds within 30 mins of being out of their floating bags and into the tank.

Theres a slight belly indent to monitor on them, but hopefully that’s just the 3 days of processing and shipping without food.

This was my first online purchase and while I hated the transit time, I’m so happy with these, so far.

Illness/Injury Honey gourami acting erratically

This is my first gtank other than a betta tank. I added this honey gourami a 5 days ago and it’s been fine, just shy. I just got home from work and he’s doing this and then just stopping and laying down. What is wrong? All the water parameters look fine, I’ve tested them multiple times a day every day. My other fish seem fine

I have a 20-gallon fish tank, and these pictures show what it looks like 2 days and 6 days after cleaning. The water seems to be turning green, and I’m not sure why or if this is normal. What could be causing this, and how can I prevent it?

If you let driftwood tannin accumulate (instead of using purigen) does it leave a tint on the glass after the tannins eventually filter out?

Help First Time Tank Owner

Hi everyone. I am starting my first fish tank soon after receiving a 20 gallon tank for free. I am not sure how to start, but I did some research and I think I want Neon tetras, male platies, cherry shrimp, some nerite snails, and some plants such as flame moss. Will this work and if so, how do i go about adding everything in? What will I need? I don't want to spend a bunch of money, maybe $200 max if possible. What are your thoughts on this?

Discussion Aquarium Decor

So I recently made a post saying I didn't know what I wanted to do to decorate my aquarium, I have small live plants that I plan on putting in the front and 2 fake plants already in as you can see, any recommendations on what you would do differently? I'm going to keep the lid off as I sorta like how the driftwood is poking out of the surface.

I'm going to be getting a beta, some shrimp and snails and also, should I get the shrimp and snails first or the beta first? I want to minimise the chance of the beta killing the shrimp and snail

Help Two questions on aquarium setup.

For context, this is a 20 gallon aquarium currently housing eight zebra danios and two otocinculus.

#1 I've got an aquarium setup that probably needs a little tweaking. First, I've got an undergravel filter system, but only about an inch of gravel on it. I just, for the first time, tried setting some live plants in it, and they don't stay, and I'm assuming a deeper bed would help with anchoring them until they can root properly. I've never had issues with water quality with this shallow amount of gravel in the past. tl;dr I've got 1" of gravel in my under gravel filter. ideally, what should it be?

#2 I should really add a heater to the tank. This is the one I own. Currently, the water level only goes to where I've added the line. Is that too shallow for a heater? I don't know a ton about heaters, so if this is a 'wtf are you using a heater like this for--go get something new!' thing, I'd appreciate the advice.

EDIT: I realized there's no context to the heater. It is about 7" from the water line to the tip, so the current water level is about 1.5" below the recommended line.

Freshwater Freshwater puffer options for a 100L cube tank

Hi all!

My LFS just gifted me a tank so I’m trying to figure out what to keep in there. I already have a community w active fishes so Im keening on a bit calmer fishes that would do well in lightly tannin colored tank. For that Im thinking of planning a puffer-only setup in a 50 × 50 × 40 cm tank (100L / 26 US gallons) that will be a true freshwater, I dont want to convert to brackish if thats not totally necessary.

My favourites, ranked purely by personal preference rather than suitability, are:

  1. Tetraodon schoutedeni
  2. Carinotetraodon irrubesco
  3. Humpback puffer (Pao palembangensis)
  4. Pea puffers

I did quite a bit of research about them all and think water volume matches w what they need but im not sure if a cube shape is ideal for them so thats why Im asking here.

I’m drawn to a slightly larger, distinctive puffer, so schoutedeni is my favourite.

I really like how irrubesco look, but given their small size, I’m not keen on keeping just one in this tank—I feel it might look a little empty. A small group would interest me more, perhaps 1 male and 3 females, but I’m unsure whether this footprint would comfortably accommodate them as adults.
For Tetraodon/Spotted Congo, I’d keep just one since they are larger species, although again sinxe its a cube I dont know if it would be ethical and/or xomfortable for those guys.

I’m considering a lightly tannin-stained setup with fine sand, driftwood, leaf litter, plants and subdued lighting.
Hopefully plenty of cover would help them feel secure and spend more time out in the open.

My source water is around pH 7, GH 7 and KH 5, and I don’t have RO.
Which of these would you recommend for this footprint long-term? I’d especially love to hear from people who have kept them!
