Found some cool old ammo at a thrift shop today. 1870s 41 Swiss rimfire, a civil war era 32 cal teat-fire cartridge, a box of late 1800s/early 1900s 38 S&W, a partial box of 1880s 32 short rimfire, and a box of vintage 22cal tear gas cartridges made in West Germany.

Care advice/resources

I received this as a gift from a very dear friend who has recently been diagnosed with a terminal illness. It was in excellent condition when I got it, and she restored it herself. It holds a lot of sentimental value to me for obvious reasons.

I'm afraid I have not been treating it well. Today, I examined it and noticed rust forming on the outside of the barrel where there wasn't any before, and I've been storing it vertically which I just read is damaging to the wood on the stock. This is as far as I know how to break it down, and now I'm a little hesitant to clean it for fear of damaging it further. Can anyone recommend resources or advice on how to ID and maintain it? The most I have is that it's likely an American Arms Big Boy.

Thank you in advance

Any idea what this is worth? (Deactivated Schuetzen style target rifle) (UK)

I work in a secondhand store and during a recent conversation with my manager about donations we're not allowed to accept and items we're not allowed to sell, she pulled this rifle out from behind a doorframe and told me it was recently found at the bottom of a box of stuff and we are now stuck with it. I asked if she's allowed to sell it to me - she said yes but she's not sure what price to put on it.

Now, I like historical firearms but I admit I'm not the most knowledgeable in that field - mostly I just enjoy the form of old flintlocks and such. I'm no historian and can't generally identify specific models, manufacturers, etc.

Google lens has taught me the rifle is a Schuetzen-style target rifle. I can tell you the rifle has been deactivated: if you zoom in on the barrel in my picture you will see someone has welded a ball bearing into the end of the barrel. Beyond that, however, I don't know much else. I gather it could be worth anywhere between £20 and £12,000 depending on provenance, manufacturer and so on.

Based on my picture is anyone able to offer any insight regarding age and value? I'd really like to own it, but at one and the same time I don't want to rip off my manager or overpay for it. Please pardon the red scribbles, the paper the rifle is leaning against had some names written on it.

Thank you!

Hey everyone! Here to give you some photos of what I recently came to own: a model 3 Russian s&w knockoff that I'm desperately trying to find the maker of ! Generally fits quite well one of the simonis Janssen and Dumoulin knockoffs but no marks except the ones in the grip ! If anyone would have any inkling what they mean that'd be GREATLY appreciated ! Apologies if badly formatted!

Lustyik Carbine Collection

I just wanted to let you folks know the Lustyik collection (author of "Civil War Carbines, From Service to Sentiment") is going up for auction. You can use google to find out the auction house since I will not provide details here.

For the past few years I have been helping a friend get the collection identified and coordinated. You guys helped with a few so I though I would give you a heads up.

Even if you are not in the market, some of these carbines have not been seen for 50+ years. The auction pictures are a heck of a lot better than mine when I posted them here.

I am not involved with this project anymore but could try to answer any questions that are not auction related.

I just bought this today. They said it’s a 1810 English navy flintlock. Is it that or is it maybe something else. Please let me know. Last photo is the only stamps it has.

I got this at the gun show today with a little bit of the profit I made from some other stuff but I'm wondering if I should sell it or keep

I believe it's a 1892 model

It's civilian

It's in 38 long colt

I paid 325 for it

Also it was made 1897

I was thinking about waiting until Wheel Gun Wednesday, but I can't wait. I got a steal on this gun because it was not working. Turns out it was a broken firing pin. I made a new pin and installed it. The old broken pin is in the upper left of the picture near the jaws of the calipers. This is a Smith and Wesson third model 38 caliber Safety Hammerless. We will see how long my homemade bar stock firing pin (unhardened) lasts. I popped a couple caps on empty brass but have not really test fired it. This is my first DAO revolver. Technically since it is a third model it is an antique and a black powder gun. Checking the serial number indicates it was made in the early 1890's. It seems more modern than that to me.

Update on my mystery Spanish Rolling Block

Got my 1876 Oviedo Rolling block today. It was rechambered to a 35 cal round. Did the chamber casting and I'm 90% sure it's a 357 mag. Few questions.

  1. Anyone familiar with Fenwick Barrels? Can't find a single thing online

  2. What are the odds it's safe to shoot? 357 has a 10,000 more psi than .43 Spanish.

Love this oddball. Much larger than a normal pepperbox or transitional revolver. About a .45 caliber.

Bad news: its not 7mm

Good news: its a rimmed ~.308 cartridge

Bad news: extractor missing and the cleaning rod jammed.

Good news: its a mod 1896 .30-40 krag rollingblock in military configuration.

Barrel is smoothbore but everything functions and is now lubricated. Anyone know where to get barrel relined besides Redman’s and Lugerman?
