Question Anki on mobile

For the ones who use Anki on mobile (IOS or Android). I'd love to know the reasons why.

Is it simply because it's more convenient than open a computer each time, you don't have a computer ? You want to use Anki any time in a day (so on mobile) ?

Isn't it unconvenient ? What do you think about it ?

An auto-reveal timer that adapts to length, difficulty, card status and more!

Many of you will have used Glutanimate's Speed Focus Mode before. It always bothered me that for the shorter cards, the timer was too long, and for longer cards too short!
So I started tinkering and fiddling with a number of variables to predict how long each card would take me creating an algorithm to push me to complete my cards efficiently, whilst allowing time to actually read and interpret the card.

Variables include:

  • Card length - longer cards take longer to read
  • Card difficulty - difficult cards may take longer (interestingly, difficulty has almost no effect on my time to flip a card)
  • Answer length - longer answers need more time
  • New/Learning/Review - new cards may need more time, I have it off for new cards so that I can learn them properly.
  • IOs and one-by-ones - get detected automatically, and timed differently
  • More to come as I record and analyse my reviews

Variables are weighted by importance before they enter an algorithm for each card, as it presents, that spits out a timer. Fully customisable with a live preview.

Calibrate - one click on startup suggests times by sampling your own review history.

Learn my pace - records your real times and variables, allowing calibrate to become more accurate the more reviews you do and Auto-tune nudges your timer up or down mid-session based on your real times, adjusting to slow or fast days. Off by default, everything is recorded locally only.

Also - Specific note types or decks can be excluded from being timed, similar to original SFM, it has a warning sound and a "More time" shortcut.

The demo above features exaggerated timing to better show off the features, the defaults are gentler.

Needless to say, this is based on the original Speed Focus Mode by Glutanimate, licensed under AGPLv3.

Feedback more than welcome, would love to see how others settings compare.

Add-ons Created an MCP for your AI agent to create cards for you so that you can focus on learning

β€’ Upvotes

Hi! I started getting back into using Anki and I realized that it takes a lot of time to create cards and it takes away from actually studying the cards. I'm big on using AI to learn and I've been using codex (you can use claude code or any other agentic harness as well), and I found that it lacked in terms of creating cards / managing them for me since it'd have to take control of my screen to manually do it.

I made an Anki Agent MCP here so that it allows your codex / claude code to directly use Anki for you and create cards on your behalf - to install it, just paste in the GitHub repo link into your agent and ask it to create cards for you with an attached lecture / pdf / resource.

For me personally, instead of spending time creating cards now, I can just go through the material on my own and then test myself afterwards with the generated cards :D

It's quite an early version 1 and not on AnkiWeb yet so I'm quite open to feedback!

Question Fixing Inability to Use Vulkan or Direct3d?

Hi there,

New Medschool Anki power user adapting to the large Anking decks.

I've noticed a big hit with added lag after downloading these huge decks and probably the syncing addition with Ankihub doesn't help.

I've tried a few things to improve performance like turning on minimalism but one thing I'd like to do is switch to Vulkan which I believe is the GPU driver? I'm running a 9070 XT GPU so it should be well beefy enough to tackle the Anki software. I'd love for the cards to be instantaneous but right now they are lagging behind 1-2 seconds with large images attached.

Unfortunately, I cannot seem to successfully switch to vulkan. Restarting Anki shows up with a full black screen for the program and a popup that states the switch to vulkan could not be performed, emergency default back to the previous driver software. The same issue occurs with Direct3d.

Really not sure where to go from here. I tried searching online but everyone else seems to have successfully switched, not sure why I'm getting crashing errors. Any technical assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Discussion What is your method of "recalling"? Am I alien from always starting from scratch?

Curious to know. How do you process a card within <10 seconds, actually? Don't you have to recall what the facts are and how they connect? Reading them takes a couple of seconds but connecting them takes a couple more seconds. Like for example (from the post - Adaptive Speed Focus Mode : r/Anki)

You have to process that the smoker is 67 years old.

You have to process the pain is located in the chest and radiates to the jaw.

You have to process the ECG shows ST elevation in 3 leads - II, III, and aVF.

And then the ultimate question - which coronary artery is most likely occluded? You'd have to picture all the coronary arteries and then respond accordingly (i.e., "Hmm circumflex is here... LAD is here...")

You can also process that there are edge cases and the what ifs.

Am I actually tripping or do yall process all this information within <10 seconds before answering and AFTER reading? Like how is that possible. I'd take ~15 seconds here.

How does memory recollection actually work. Is it read -> immediate answer = abc? Or is it read -> recall thought process, visuals, conceptual understanding, and edge cases from scratch -> answer = abc?

The way I do it to retain information while continuously ensuring I understand, is via "read -> recall from scratch -> answer = abc" route. Is this genuinely alien.

[EDIT: Ok I found the key term for this - system 2 vs system 1 thinking. The way I think is basically always on system 2, as that's how I recall and learn information.]

Question Looking for a FREE, Complete Anki Tutorial – Beginner to Advanced (A to Z)

Looking for a FREE, Complete Anki Tutorial – Beginner to Advanced (A to Z)

Hi everyone!

I'm looking for a comprehensive, free Anki tutorial or course that covers everything about Anki, from beginner to advanced level, preferably in one structured video or a complete tutorial series.

I'm particularly interested in learning:

  1. Basics: Deck creation, note types, card types, tags, and subdecks.

  2. Spaced Repetition: FSRS, scheduling, review settings, and optimization.

  3. Advanced Card Creation: Cloze deletion, Image Occlusion, and custom card templates.

  4. Add-ons: Essential add-ons and how to use them effectively.

  5. Advanced Features: Filtered decks, custom study, statistics, and browser management.

  6. Synchronization: Anki Desktop, AnkiDroid, and AnkiWeb.

  7. Best Practices: Efficient workflows for managing thousands of flashcards and long-term retention.

I've been using Anki, but I want to understand its features thoroughly and make the most of it.

Ideally, I'm looking for a single comprehensive YouTube course, playlist, or free online resource that covers Anki from A to Z, rather than watching dozens of unrelated tutorials.

If you've come across any excellent free resources, please share the links.

Thanks in advance!

Resources What if you could explore your Anki cards as a knowledge graph in Obsidian? That's what i built Flashcard Bank for!

Hi everyone!

I've been using Anki for learning, but I've always felt that a growing collection of flashcards could be much more than just a set of questions and answers to review.

Over time, a serious learning practice can produce thousands of cards, representing a substantial body of knowledge. I wanted to be able to explore that knowledge, discover connections, organize it, and build on it, while still using Anki for spaced repetition.

That's what led me to build Flashcard Bank, my first Obsidian plugin!

The idea is to combine Obsidian's knowledge management capabilities with Anki's spaced repetition system, allowing you to manage and explore your flashcards as a connected knowledge base.

A few things make the approach different:

  • Thousands of cards without thousands of notes. Cards are ordinary Markdown list items with inline metadata, so you can keep multiple cards together wherever they belong in your notes, rather than creating a separate file for each one.
  • One place to manage everything. The plugin gathers cards from across your vault into a central interface where you can browse, search, filter, create, and edit them.
  • A web of knowledge. Include regular [[wikilinks]] in your questions and answers to connect cards to concepts. The plugin automatically identifies cards that refer to the same concepts, allowing you to explore their relationships through an interactive concept map. You can also link individual cards directly.
  • Anki synchronization. Choose which cards to sync to Anki through AnkiConnect, while keeping your Obsidian notes as the source of truth.

The underlying idea is simple: Anki helps you remember your knowledge; Obsidian helps you work with it.

I developed the plugin with Claude Code, through an extensive back-and-forth process of design, implementation, testing, and refinement. The ideas and overall vision come from my own learning practices and from problems I encountered along the way.

Since this is my first plugin, I'm sure there's plenty of room to make it better. I'd really love to hear what you think of the approach, how you might use it, what you'd like to see added, or what you think could be improved.

I hope the plugin can grow and become more useful through the ideas and experiences of other users, so please don't hesitate to share your thoughts, however big or small. I'd be very happy to hear from you!

Discussion Why is Anki on Mac so much nicer than Windows?

Just a minor complaint, but as someone who uses both Mac and windows it is kinda depressing seeing the UI on windows be as depressing as it is.

I feel like it really wouldn’t be difficult to update the UI in such a way that the program looks comparable on both platforms.

Discussion Use Anki for calculus/physics studying?

As a student going to school for a science degree, would Anki work to schedule out days to practice certain problems? For example, having a card that said β€œprojectile motion problems,” and so if you got a card on a day, you would do the projectile motion problems and rank the card based on how well you did. Has anyone tried this to any success before I start out?

Question Checking my deck progress

Hi,

I have been working through an Anki deck that includes vocabulary from the Shinkanzen Master N2 θͺžε½™ textbook. Before I began studying, I set the number of cards to review per day so that I would finish the deck a little before test day. There are around 2,000+ cards in this one. Anyway, each day it gives me the amount I need to study, but includes cards from the previous day as well, for spaced repitition. That's not a problem, but it makes me wonder if I should recalculate the number I

have to review per day to cover more new cards. I know I can look at a list of the cards included in the deck, and the one with "New" beside them are ones I haven't gone over yet, but how can I check to see how many more "New" cards I have left? I looked in filters, but maybe I am missing something.

I would appreciate any help you guys can provide!

Question Texts overlapping BetterSearch / FastBar

Does anyone else have the same issue?

Typing terms in the search field in the pop-up for tags/decks/etc results in characters overlapping the preceding text (refer to image #2). This started happening after I updated Anki to 26.09.2 if I recall correctly. I was hoping it would eventually get fixed but it persists to this day.

Details:

  • Anki version: anki-26.09.3-mac-apple
  • Operating system: macOS 26.5.2 (25F84)
  • I've tried disabling all add-ons except BetterSearch (1052724801) and FastBar - with nightmode support (46611790) both together and individually to no avail.
  • Updating all add-ons does not fix the issue
  • Reverting to version 26.09 does not fix the issue

Hoping to find a solution. (I was also planning to ask the add-on creators but I thought to ask here first.)

Question Mock Revision

I'm struggling with my anki flashcards before mocks cause I only have a month and a half left but I'm nowhere near completing them and I'm only able to do 30 new flashcards a day along with my reviews without burning out. Plus, in 16 days I plan to stop my new flashcards all together and just do past past papers instead. But I'm scared I won't remember enough content. Any suggestions?

Add-ons Just another Japanese learning add-on

Hello, I've been working on an add-on for a while and I'd like to share some of its features.

Something I haven't seen being done before is quiz cards like this. You can click one of the options to instantly solve the card. All options are picked in such a way that they show similar looking kanji. You can generate these out of your usual word cards and it references your sentence field (or database) and your other word card fields. A lot of these generated card features can be turned on or off, so you can customize the amount of information you get on your card to your liking.

You can generate cards you can answer by typing in your answer or writing it on a tablet/with your mouse.

You can also generate sentence cards by querying several providers and your entire collection. This uses Sudachi to convert some words into different forms without creating multiple cards. The card below was actually created from a word card for ζ˜Žγ‚‹γ„.
All sentences are stored in a database and shown randomly based on words that you might know, words that you've seen recently etc. It essentially tries to give you the closest to i+1 that it can. This database grows over time so eventually you'll have a lot of unique material to go through.

I plan on releasing this by the end of the month, for free. More information here: https://www.patreon.com/November_November/posts/anki-quiz-card-172318100

Let me know your thoughts or if you have any questions!

Resources The Yomitan Dokuen plugin now supports custom Anki export

Post image
9 Upvotes

... i.e. specifying note types and filling in field templates like "{expression}" and "{glossary}", in contrast to Dokuen's previous fixed-format export.

Bug reports welcome! (Or pull requests, of course.)

A few fields aren't supported yet (the full list is in the readme on GitHub), most notably {screenshot} and {clipboard-image}, but rest assured those are coming very soon. Actually the code for those is almost done, it's just waiting on a new host API rollout that adds support for passing the OCR image back to the plugin.

Enjoy!

Add-ons Introducing Anki Dungeon

Thumbnail gallery
28 Upvotes

Hi all, I'm an avid Anki user and have been working for a while now on a small pet project to make it more enjoyable for my girlfriend and myself. The result of all that work is Anki Dungeon, an idle-rpg roguelike that plays alongside your Anki as you review. Since I've got it to a state I'm pretty happy with I thought I would release it publicly (https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1407678010?cb=1791765864683). The add-on code is 1407678010.
Anki Dungeon works by tying every units "speed stat" to your review count, with faster units requiring less reviews between their actions. Each run is unique, and as your characters progress through different themed dungeons they will be offered randomized power-ups and rewards to become stronger as you go.
Since I wanted this game to be as unobtrusive as possible, it exists solely as a link on the homepage that you can choose whether or not to open as you review. Any reviews you do without the game open are still banked up and can be applied to future runs.
There are 13 different modes of progressive difficulty to beat as you go, with several difficulty settings within each one. The sense of progression is helped by both an Achievements tab and a Collection that records which relics, companions, enemies, and bosses you've encountered while playing.
Since I'm not a professional developer by any means, feedback is always welcome and appreciated. No AI art was used in this project; I sourced all my assets from real artists and have provided credits in the about section of the game.
