Im dog sitting a border collie right now. Poor bastard lives in an apartment in yhe city. Freaks out at every dog and car, because he was bred to do shit like this, not stare at the ceiling at home.

That shits so sad dude. Couldn't imagine being bred for something so hard that you instinctively feel the urge to do it and then be denied that urge. It seems like it would lead to psychosis or some kind of cognitive dissonance.

u/Philosopher115 Aug 14 '26

Same thing happens to people too.

42

u/Less-Squash7569 Aug 14 '26

Absolutely. It seems like stuff like most mental health stuff is some kind of left overs from our earlier societies. Things that use to be advantageous for us before cause issues now because they dont fit into our modern life styles. Being autistic was probably pretty dope when your autism made you hyper fixate in the plants and their uses, being anxious helped when you were possibly being stalked by a predator and needed that adrenaline burst to survive, hell even being a night person vs a morning person would benefit a tribe because differing hours means people can be doing something 24 hours a day, no need to force the morning person to stay up all night taking care of the fire and watching for intruders when you have grug who doesnt like going to sleep until the fire in the sky shows up so he does it anyways.

Actually being anxious is a glitch with the system that helped us survive predators. Most humans and other animals briefly experience stress symptoms when in danger, but their hormone levels go back to relatively normal shortly after the danger is gone. Some of us don’t go back to to normal quickly or often.

Ive heard ptsd specifically is like the parasympathetic reaction of fight or flight being stuck in the on position, and from that I can totally see evolution keeping it around for survival. Kind or like a "break glass in case of emergency" type of thing, but the glass is your peace of mind and sanity.

3

u/Lord_Rapunzel Aug 15 '26

Better to have a glitchy survival system that breaks sometimes than none at all, from an evolutionary perspective.

4

u/Fireeyes510 Aug 15 '26

We’re not in the evolutionary stage anymore, we’re in the technological stage, there’s plenty of people now making it to old age with zero survival instincts.

8

u/DFWtixFleas Aug 15 '26

If not for Grug, us day folk would have never survived. RIP Grug.

5

u/Less-Squash7569 Aug 15 '26

His genes live on today. Every night owl and insomniac is probably is a legacy of his lack of this hero. We salute you grug, at 4am.

4

u/WokeGrandma Aug 15 '26

Literally read this at 3:59 a.m. Grug’s my great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great grandpa!

2

u/Less-Squash7569 Aug 16 '26

He did it for you wokegrandma, be proud of your night owl heritage!

2

u/peejay5440 Aug 15 '26

You appear to be versed in the ways of evolution.

1

u/Less-Squash7569 Aug 16 '26

I don't know shit, It just makes sense! Who knows if its right. Im not a scientist

-1

u/ProbablySlacking Aug 14 '26

When was the last time you traveled 20+ miles in a day? On foot.

10

u/Less-Squash7569 Aug 14 '26

14 years ago, I did 20 mile patrols through Afghanistan for 7 months every day while carrying over 100lbs . How about you and whats your point.

3

u/ProbablySlacking Aug 14 '26

This morning on my run

It makes you an outlier. Most people don’t.

You are adapted evolutionarily to doing it.

6

u/Less-Squash7569 Aug 15 '26

Ok and what was is point when we're talking about dogs who are adapted to do this being stuck living apartment lives in the city? Im not following at all what youre trying to say

1

u/Less-Squash7569 Aug 15 '26

Are you trying to poorly imply that high energy breeds of dogs adapted to doing work ie working dogs dont have issues from being stuck in small homes? Holy shit dude please look this up so I dont have to explain why it's wrong. You know they have tons of issues from being stuck inside right? So again what was your point.

2

u/ProbablySlacking Aug 15 '26

No man… and you can pump the breaks on the combativeness here.

You just said above you “couldn’t imagine” what it would be like to have a body designed for something and then not do that thing.

I was just pointing out that you do indeed have a body designed for something that (most) people don’t do.

0

u/Less-Squash7569 Aug 16 '26 edited Aug 16 '26

My body wasn't bred the way a dogs is though. We dont have the same evolutionary pressures, there was no other species guiding My ancestors to fit their needs like with the dog. Im able to go for a short run when I feel like it, or open the door and go out any time I want, whereas dogs cant. Dont tell me to pump shit, I dont like your weird attitude, and your opinion is shit too, why are you trying to reason with me that its ok to lock up a high energy dog and then comparing it to a human which can go out whenever they want? Do you really think thats a good comparison? Jesus dude dont talk to me anymore.

12

u/JadePhoenix42 Aug 14 '26

Can you hide his toys? That should keep him busy for 2 minutes.

7

u/Powermetalbunny Aug 15 '26

Maybe try some clicker training to make him do some goofy shit the next time his owners say a specific trigger word. Don't tell them though... let them wonder why. Like, train him to cover his snout with his paw when he hears a fart noise, or make him spin a circle whenever he hears the word "Hey"... something stupid. It'll give him a job to focus on for a while.

4

u/defariasdev Aug 15 '26

haha that's interesting. Last time I watched him a couple of years ago, I taught him how to jump in less than 2 days. His owners loved it and he still does it today. So i might just give that a shot

2

u/TwoShedsJackson1 Aug 15 '26

This looks like Australia pushing the sheep in the yards up to the woolshed. Inside they are shorn of their wool.

Could be New Zealand too although there is usually some green grass.

The dogs love this!

1

u/porcupine_snout Aug 16 '26

I hope you take him on lots of walks and runs in the park

155

u/NestedForLoops Aug 14 '26

Are my eyes playing tricks on me, or was he running across their backs at one point?

131

u/SatineoftheNorth Aug 14 '26

Yep, the dog was wool surfing 🔥

28

u/SlurryBender Aug 14 '26

One of a collie's many skills!

3

u/MeFolly Aug 15 '26

“If you stupid ~^^{=|!>#s won’t Get Out Of The Way!!!! “

Really, haven’t you wished you could do this sometimes?

9

u/IceWellDo Aug 15 '26

Not just at one point, for most of the video he was running across their backs. Even near the end there.

42

u/mrtn17 Aug 14 '26

It's amazing what these border collies can do

31

u/5th_aether Aug 14 '26

Yall think we could get some of these doing traffic control?

28

u/Glittering_Estate_72 Aug 14 '26

I believe Border Collie's are born with a doctorate in fluid dynamics.

9

u/Powermetalbunny Aug 15 '26

And ADHD.... if you don't give them a productive hobby to do, they'll invent a destructive one....

13

u/post-bak Aug 14 '26

Shitty music, let me hear the commands the dog is getting.

5

u/royalpro Aug 15 '26

My cousin had a blue heeler as a cattle dog and it was pretty amazing what it could do with out any commands.

3

u/likeablyweird Aug 15 '26

Awee! Come by! Come by! Steady, steady. Walk! Walk! That'll do. Good girl.

9

u/Ecstatic-Radish-7931 Aug 14 '26

Damn! 😁 that's a well trained dog if I ever saw one!

21

u/Altruistic_Finger669 Aug 14 '26

You wont find many humans who loves their jobs as much as these collies does

My golden retriever out here just doing her best.

5

u/Opposite_Carry_4920 Aug 15 '26

I believe the technical term is "going ham".

3

u/cosguy224 Aug 14 '26

I thought it was a dog running across rocks at first. Saw the video playing before I saw the title.

3

u/Condorman80 Aug 14 '26

This is the greatest thing I've ever seen.

3

u/DaydreamTacos Aug 14 '26

How do you even begin to train a dog to do that? Impressive!

I'm picturing my dogs... Just lounging and sniffing like lazy loafs.

5

u/Lord_Rapunzel Aug 15 '26

Genetics is a huge part of it. Herding breeds do the basics on their own and they are super smart and crave structure and stimulation. Frankly it's cruel to have them as a regular pet, they need a job or they get anxious.

1

u/Emergency_Mine_4455 Aug 15 '26

Sometimes, absolutely. Depends on the individual dog. My parents’ Aussie is from a working line, and he makes a wonderful pet. They take him on long walks in the mornings and throw the ball (and let him chase rabbits on their rural property) to help with the energy, and he cuddles with them on the couch and goes with my mom on her real estate showings. Personality plays a huge role.

3

u/Objective_Living5169 Aug 15 '26

This is actually insane

3

u/AntCrobat Aug 15 '26

Talk about a video that cuts off too soon!

3

u/BuzzAllWin Aug 15 '26

That is literally collie paradise they love herding anything, being in charge fucking with that many sheep must make them feel like a god amongst dogs

2

u/likeablyweird Aug 15 '26

This dog is amazing. If you love watching dogs herd, Sean the Sheepman on YouTube has some wonderful lassies.

2

u/VenomWood Aug 15 '26

God I miss my border collie. He would’ve picked this up just with observing and instinct. RIP Jagger

2

u/false_goats_beard Aug 15 '26

Now do the local highway at commit time. 😂

1

u/Potato1223 Aug 15 '26

Useless music again. Trash

1

u/OkString3194 Aug 16 '26

Like Patton in 'Patton'... 🪖

1

u/RuleNumberThirtyTwo Aug 18 '26

Who’s the goodest boy!?

2

u/Any_Coyote6662 26d ago

I love how he runs across the yop of them.

1

u/still_sneakin Aug 14 '26

Absolutely amazing!

-2

u/AspenStarr Smarter than the average bear 🧸 Aug 14 '26

This feels like an over excessive amount of sheep..
