Definitely like the dark blue stripe on the p42s and I like the superliner name on the side of the superliner cars. Like the hybrid of phase 3 on the f40ph cab cars

Photo [NEC] I made a dashboard tracking construction of the Gateway tunnel - hudson.tube

Now that tunnel boring has started, I thought it would be interesting to visualize the Gateway project's ongoing status since there's so much going on at once.

So I corralled a bunch of data from Gateway's official sources onto one page and I think it turned out pretty neat. You can see the result here: https://hudson.tube

I've been checking the construction cameras obsessively for over a year at this point just nerding out and reading all the notices and updates from GDC and I doubt I'm the only one so hopefully someone else finds this useful!

Just as a preview, I'm working on a construction camera viewer that should feel snappier than EarthCam and make it easier to do stuff like compare images between different dates/times. And I'm generally open to suggestions for more data sources and widgets to put up so let me know in the comments if you wanna see something.

Discussion If Amtrak were to provide service to the Shenandoah Valley region in Virginia which routing would make more sense? Both routings would entirely use existing railroad right of ways but the routing to Clifton Forge via Harrisonburg and Staunton would partially use inactive railroad trackage

Question Am I missing something, or is Amtrak’s Baltimore → NY schedule completely ridiculous right now?

First, a little context: I’ve been commuting on Amtrak for years, like many years, using muti-Pass. So I fully admit that I may be more critical than the average passenger, especially after they change the pass from $560ish to $750 with more and more problem not fixed. (Because I’m on a multi-ride pass, I can only choose from the Amtrak trains that are eligible for the pass, which are right now are only Northeast Regional.)

That said, I genuinely have to ask: what is going on with the Baltimore → NYC evening schedule?

I saw the information about the Portal North Bridge work and understand that infrastructure work can require temporary schedule changes. Not complaining about the construction itself.

But who decided on this particular schedule?

Right now, there are two Amtrak trains around 6 PM, one 6:09pm and another 6:54, and then there is basically a three hour gap with no train from Baltimore to New York until around 9:57 PM.

How is that supposed to work?

TBH, Even under the regular schedule, the evening service has already had some pretty strange gaps, for example, there was a train around 7:58 PM, followed by the next one around 9:59 PM. So instead of having reasonably distributed evening departures, you already had a roughly two hour gap. Now it has somehow become 6:58 PM → 9:58 PM.

I genuinely don't understand the logic. Many years ago it used to be at least one train per hour.

I understand that there are capacity constraints and that infrastructure projects have to happen. But if you are charging significantly more for a pass, while providing fewer practical options for commuters, I mean...?

For people who also regularly commute between Baltimore and New York: am I missing something about how Amtrak schedules these trains? Is there an operational reason for concentrating two trains around 6 PM and then leaving such a huge gap until almost 10 PM?

I’d genuinely love to understand the logic behind this, because from a commuter’s perspective, it seems completely bizarre.

Question Concerning trip

Currently on the 421 Texas Eagle heading to Los Angeles. We were stopped in Marshall Texas for about 6 hours and then they bussed us to Fort Worth and kept us in the train station for another 6 hours. After we got on the train we have all been coughing and sneezing and pooping like crazy. About 1 in 5 passengers are sick including myself. Do you know if Amtrak gives us refunds for this sort of thing?

News What's your biggest cafe car complaint?

• Upvotes

In 2015, Conor Skelding filed a Freedom of Information Act request through MuckRock, seeking all complaints submitted by riders about Amtrak’s café cars over a two-year period.

Do y'all think we would have the same complaints?

Question Wifi on Saluki (between Champaign and Chicago)

Hello

I wanted to find out if there is WiFi onboard Saluki 390 between Champaign and Chicago. There are very few posts about this. The website https://www.amtrak.com/journey-with-wi-fi-train-station does not indicate Saluki.

Anyone have any recent experiences on this train?

Question Can I get a full refund if I cancel since one leg of my ticket is cancelled?

I have a ticket on the Pacific Surfliner on Nov 7 from SD to LA then transfer to Coast Starlight from LA to Portland both on 1 ticket. Looks like the Pacific Surfliner is cancelled on Nov 7/8. Can I cancel my entire ticket and get a refund if 1 portion is already cancelled? I haven't gotten a cancellation notice yet, but that's the latest news. It's cutting it close to my trip. I need to make contingency plans. I'll just fly from SD to Portland and save Coast Starlight for another trip. Pretty disappointed to be honest.

Discussion Anybody know why my trip from Chicago to Boston is making me do last leg on a bus?

Just realized on my Amtrak app that once we get to Albany we are charting a bus instead of a train

Is there a reason for this? I’m wondering if I can get some sort of refund for not being able to ride the train

Question New to Amtrak: booking hotels ?

We will be taking our first Amtrak trip, cross country, next year. Empire builder, Portland to Chicago. Scheduled arrival is 4:45PM, but I know Amtrak is often delayed.

So my question is, since we plan on spending a few nights in Chicago before flying home, should I book the first arrival night separately from the rest of the nights in case there is a severe delay to avoid the entire hotel booking being lost? Or would you just make one booking?

Thank you in advance!

Question Updates on Cascade 504?

Is anyone riding up north on Cascade #504 today? I know the train got taken out of service and will be changed to bus transport.

It looks that the bus hasn’t even left Eugene yet. Is the departure time from Portland going to be delayed depending on when the bus leaves Eugene, or will they find new buses for Portland -> Seattle travelers?
