This is the place for anyone to ask questions about Amsterdam. If you are a tourist visiting Amsterdam, you are moving to or recently arrived in Amsterdam, or you just have a basic question about life in Amsterdam and want some advice, this is the place to post your question. This post is refreshed every week on Sunday. Please feel free to repost in subsequent weeks.
READ THE WIKI FIRST. The people answering questions are locals who want to share the city they love with visitors, but only with people who make an effort. Read at least the Essential Tourist Information in our world-famous wiki before you ask a question. Otherwise, you may be told to go back and read it. The wiki is written by us, and updated when relevant. If the entries are old it's because nothing has changed. There are no "hidden gems" that we have not already included in the wiki. You may also check wikivoyage for more general tips on everything that is Amsterdam.
HOTELS ARE EXPENSIVE AND WE DON'T HAVE GOOD ADVICE ON THEM. Because we live here, we don't know what the best hotels are. Amsterdam is one of the most touristed cities in the world and has the highest hotel prices in Europe and prices go up every year. The city is deliberately trying to reduce tourism by raising the prices. There really isn't a secret "cheap" solution. Most "Airport" hotels are not connected to the Airport and will be more trouble getting to than it's worth.
TOURISTS CAN PURCHASE MARIJUANA, DESPITE WHAT YOU READ IN FOREIGN PRESS. Understand that the coffeeshops are just a tiny part of Amsterdam, so posts that treat Amsterdam like it's the Las Vegas of drugs sometimes get a negative response. We're happy to give you advice about coffeeshops and to discuss drug policy. The experts are our friends at /r/AmsterdamEnts, ask them the big questions.
WE DON'T HELP WITH ILLEGAL STUFF AND WILL BAN YOU FOR ASKING. We will not help you with things that are clearly illegal. Coffeeshops caught selling to minors get shut down and everyone loses their jobs. Authorities check for people smuggling marijuana out of the country. Hard drugs are illegal and so is asking for or selling them on Reddit.
WE DON'T ALLOW TICKET SALES OR TRADING. We do not allow selling, buying, or trading tickets on /r/Amsterdam due to the high rate of fraud. You should do everything on ticketswap.nl. We're aware that is difficult to get tickets to Anne Frank, van Gogh, etc. We have no solutions for you, sorry.
RED LIGHT DISTRICT Please be respectful and keep in mind this is a citysubreddit, and not your personal kink google. You can also can get some good tips from these threads of RLD sex workers: here and here.
USE PUBLIC TRANSIT TO GET AROUND 9292.nl is a great resource for plotting your movement around the city and between Amsterdam and other places. We strongly recommend against using taxis or Ubers.
DOE AARDIG. There is Dutch directness and there is rudeness. The people coming here don't know how we do things, and are usually well-meaning people who just want to enjoy the city we love. Be kind to them. For the tourists and new residents, please remember that we are not Google; respect our time by doing some basic research first and then asking your questions like you're speaking to a real human who is volunteering to speak to you.

I’m currently at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, and at around 9:58 AM today (October 15), all the blinds along the windows on both sides of the terminal suddenly closed at the same time.
They’re completely opaque, so you can no longer see the runway, and the terminal became noticeably darker. Everything else seems to be operating normally, including the shops, and I’ve heard repeated announcements in Dutch.
Does anyone who works at Schiphol or is familiar with airport operations know why this might happen? Could it be an automated building system, a special flight, or some kind of operational procedure?

It’s close to ff’ing Disneyland right now looking at all the complaining Posts

I dislike junkies , bicycles, dealers , tering smerissen , loud music , dog shit etc
But they are my junkies, bicycles , dealers, tering smerissen and dog shit
And if you don’t like that you can ff off

Hey everyone, been lurking for a time but first time posting, and yeah this is a rant.
Of course I’m generalizing and I’m not talking about everyone, but I just gotta ask because I can’t make sense of it.
•It is one thing for runners to fully avoid using walking paths to invade bike lanes.
•Another to do it during rush hour.
•One different not to stick to a side but run in the middle of the lane.
•One extra to wear noise cancelling earphones (or earphones in general but not react at all to someone calling your attention, I can’t tell which one is it).
•And last but not least run in the same direction as the cycling so you don’t see any of the bikes approaching you.
But all of them?
Just why?
Am I missing something here?
Is there an advantage to this combo??
Cause I feel if it was just not all of them combined it could be fairly easy to avoid collisions.
But if you do them all no matter how you’re considered the weakest one in the traffic it’s a recipe for disaster.
Like for instance, why on earth don’t you just do your thing but at least run on the opposite side of the road so you face the cyclists??
Signed a frustrated cyclist that deals daily with this phenomenon during rush hour 😅

Hi everyone!
My mother and I are looking for responsible, loving people who would be willing to adopt these little kittens we rescued in Bulgaria. They're around about 3 months old, and we're hoping to find homes where they can stay together in pairs. They're currently living with us in Sofia, Bulgaria.
TL;DR: We found this kittens in the backyard of our village in and have been taking care of them, but unfortunately, we can't keep them all. We're looking for loving homes, preferably with people willing to adopt them in pairs. We're happy to arrange adoption in the Netherlands, as we've already successfully done this before with the help of a reliable pet transport company, that travels to many western countries. About a month ago, they safely transported two other kittens we had rescued from the street in front of our house to the Netherlands, where a lovely lady adopted them and gave them a loving home.
IMPORTANT: We offer to split the travel costs for the pair that you choose to adopt.
A little about our situation:
Unfortunately, there are so many stray cats in Bulgaria, and finding people willing to adopt them is much harder than you might think. That's one of the main reasons we've decided to look for homes abroad.
We've been doing our best to help as many animals as we can, but it's becoming increasingly difficult to take care of all of them ourselves.
The kittens are around 2 months old now. They're lovely, playful little babies, and we just want them to have a chance to grow up somewhere safe, with people who will genuinely love and care for them.
We would really prefer for them to be adopted in pairs, as they're siblings who have grown up together. They're all currently living together at our place, and we'd love for them to have each other's company in their new homes, too.
A little about our previous adoption experience:
About a month ago, we managed to find a home in the Netherlands for two other kittens we had rescued from the street in front of our house. A lovely lady adopted them, and thankfully everything went really well. We're still in touch with her, and it's been wonderful seeing how they're doing in their new home.
For transportation, we used a reliable pet transport company based in Bulgaria that regularly travels across Europe. They took care of pretty much everything and were really responsible throughout the entire journey.
We even had a WhatsApp group where they kept us updated every few hours about where the kittens were, how they were doing, and how the trip was going. It was really reassuring, especially since we wanted to make sure they were safe throughout the journey.
I'm mentioning this because I know adopting an animal from another country might sound complicated, but we've already been through the process once, and we'd be more than happy to share our experience or help arrange everything with anyone interested. Of course, travel would need to be arranged once the kittens are old enough and meet the necessary requirements.
If anyone is interested in adopting a pair, please feel free to send me a private message. I'd be more than happy to answer any questions, send more pictures or videos, and discuss everything with you.
And if you're not able to adopt, we'd really appreciate it if you could share this post. Maybe someone you know is looking for two little companions. ❤️
We're not a shelter or an organization. It's just me and my mother trying to help some cats that would otherwise be left on the streets. We know we can't save every animal, but we're trying to do what we can.
Thank you so much to anyone who takes the time to read this or help us spread the word. ❤️🐾

Alvast bedankt!!

TL;DR: looking for people who has inside knowledge of beauty and hair dress industry in Amsterdam (or around) and would be willing to spend little time explaining how things usually work and maybe some advise on how to enter in the industry. Thanks!
Hi all,
I thought it was maybe worth trying to try to find some nice person who wouldn't mind spending a bit of time trying to help us giving us a better picture on how this field works.
So my partner, since a kid, always wanted to try to become a hairdresser. It was not allowed by his parent as they seemed this profession as inferior (100% disagree but this is very typical Asian parents mentality). He has been doing odd jobs and after he was not renewed in his last job, he decided to try to see if he could pivot into this field. He is from China but lives here for 3 years, no visa required.
He decided to go to China to do an intensive course to learn basics of cutting women, coloring and basic perm. So he learned and he can cut hair but obviously he is in a position that he needs more practice and experience.
I gotta say that he probably did not research in advance how this would work in practice: he thought (naively) that he would do a course and then he would find a place where we could join as a junior/internship to continue practicing which doesn't seem to be like that.
Well turns out that he (and me) know almost nothing about the field and we do not know anyone who knows about it so it can tell us how things work, if what he is doing is reasonable etc. We know now that people who go with the official route, you need to spend around 2 years going to school and learn it. This isn't an option for two main reasons: one he doesn't speak Dutch (he wants to learn but realistically speaking even if he started more seriously today, he wouldn't be able to get enough level for 1-2 years), and he does not want to spend 2 years going to school for this, he is almost 42.
So far, he opened an Instagram and Chinese Instagram (little red notebook) and he has been offering himself for free to cut people's hair. And try to build a portfolio while he gets to practice (he has managed to get around 6-7 people in a week or so, gotta say mostly friends and people from Chinese social media).
So I am trying to help him to try to pursue his dream. A bit more background: he used to work for a big cosmetic shop brand in China, know how to do makeup and used to be a trainer for sell workers in the shops about it. So he does have a background in beauty industry, he has good style, knows about fashion and looks (which I thought could be a beneficial).
I was wondering if someone here works in this industry and could spare some time to share a bit of inside information and their story. Or could help to find trainees opportunities in Amsterdam (I said Amsterdam because doesn't know Dutch, could be easier only with English and Chinese). He can of course meet in person and pay for a coffee, or online. Thanks a lot

Hi everyone, odd question but I have been wondering something lately. It seems like almost all the cleaners in the city of Amsterdam are Brazilian or I have yet to encounter someone from another nationality. It also seems that every time we do employ a Brazilian cleaner they disappear or discontinue the services after six months but then there’s immediately a replacement pushed forward. Genuinely curious what is going on or how the cleaner system works here. They clean excellent and they’re great but just wondering.

Been here for 10y and can't find anything that catches my attention.
Been to sorts of parties, played in many sports teams or equivalent, been to museums and more cultural activities, cycled everywhere, took part-time jobs next to my main job, been to (and sick of) networking events, volunteered in multiple organizations., been to bigger cities and smaller towns..my latest hobby was spending hours at the library learning about topics I like. But that hobby again is exhausted.
I find myself with some free time after work and gym and now I really don't know what to do with it and I know it's valuable time many people would kill for so I want to use it valuably. Suggestions are very welcome. Urbex? thanks

Hello from Paris!
I bought two tickets for James McMurtry’s show this Friday in Leiden a while ago, but unfortunately, I had to rearrange some plans, so I’ll be seeing him in Antwerp at the end of the month instead.
I already posted about the tickets in the Leiden subreddit, but no one seems to be interested, so I thought I’d try my luck here as well. I’d rather not see them go to waste, so if anyone in Amsterdam fancies a trip to Leiden for the show, let me know! Happy to give both tickets away for free.

Police issued a statement about Hadjar, a woman last seen around the RAI on October 4. The police said they were hesitant to release her name and photo, but now the case has more urgency. They have not said if there was a reason for the increased concern, other than she has been away for over a week.
Anyone with information can call the national tip line, 0800-6070, or the anonymous police line, 0800-7000.

I was meant to run the marathon with my sister but I sprained my ankle quite badly.
I'm in the 4hr predicated finishing time so Wave 4 Orange. Start Area A: Olympic Stadium.
It would be a shame to let the ticket go to waste. If you can run it, amazing!
I'm really keen for someone to make the most of it so let me know if you want the ticket and I can send you the bib qr code via email or WhatsApp.
It's too late to change the name but it would be funny to see someone run under my surname. I'll be cheering my sister on so hopefully I can cheer you on too!
I saw this post from last year so I assume I can post on this sub: https://www.reddit.com/r/Amsterdam/s/inakhHTqch

Hoi allemaal,

I was in a bike collision on Monday, fairly bad and central, with an Orange Swapfiets. It all happened so quick so I'm not even sure who was in the wrong but I'm certain the guy who hit me (I'm a female) was going so fast he did not even attempt to brake. What struck me the most is that after I fell to the floor, got up, front wheel completely bent, this man did not even say sorry or ask if I was okay? The first thing I did was ask him, and he did not even return the question? Is that normal here??? Or I just got unlucky

In every post where someone is saying something happened or a crime was committed, nearly every response says "but the police won't do anything about it". Is this based on factual experience or just hearsay?
I'm just curious about how this is the case. Amsterdam is a wealthy European city, and there seems to be a fairly robust police presence.
Is the police force just woefully understaffed and the city government won't fund them?
Or are they just not doing their jobs?
Or are they actually doing their jobs but Reddit likes to complain about things?
I'm honestly curious about this because I've only lived here a year and haven't had any police interactions. But it seems strange to have something like "my child was run over by a fatbike" and all the responses say "well, the police will just ignore it". That sounds like a third world country, not a European world capital.

Open to new acquaintances :)

Yesterday, I was walking on the pavement in Amsterdam when something suddenly hit me hard on the side of my head. It hurt, I got no damage tho but still, and I was completely caught off guard.
I turned around and saw two guys, probably around 18–20 years old, on a fatbike. They were looking at me, laughing, and shouting insults, including something like “k****,” before speeding off.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t take a picture of them or get any details before they disappeared.
Honestly, what is going on? I was literally just walking on the pavement, minding my own business, and ended up getting hit in the head and insulted for no reason.
It’s one thing to ride recklessly, but deliberately hitting someone and then speeding away is something else entirely.
I always try to stay calm and remind myself that actions have consequences. But honestly, part of me hopes that one day they’ll try this with the wrong person and finally face some consequences for their behaviour.
