Discussion I was done with Alienware Command Center's antics, so I built a full GUI on top of AlienFX Tools that works like G-Helper (m15 R7)
TL;DR: Alien Controls is a tiny tray app that replaces AWCC on my m15 R7. It has presets, F1 G-Mode with GPU OC, F2/F3 hotkeys and RGB, and idles at 0% CPU / ~40 MB RAM. It's built on T-Troll's alienfx-tools, made with AI help, and it's a personal project / proof of concept. Repo at the bottom.
Why
AWCC on my m15 R7 was driving me nuts:
- background services keeping WMI Provider Host busy
- slow to open, random resets
- way too much going on just to switch a power mode
G-Helper made life so much better for Asus owners, and I wanted the same thing for my Alienware. So I disabled the AWCC services and built Alien Controls.
What it does
- Presets from the tray, the window or F2: Battery, Quiet, Balanced, Performance (power mode + CPU boost + refresh rate), plus Custom
- F1 = G-Mode: fans max, Aggressive CPU boost, optional GPU overclock (core/memory offsets, AC only, keep-or-revert timer)
- F3 opens/hides the app from anywhere, even over borderless games, like a handheld quick menu
- Auto preset: Battery (60 Hz, boost off) when you unplug, back to your preset when you plug in
- Live temps, fan %, RAM/VRAM and CPU/GPU/total watts
- Per-key keyboard color + effects, and the status keys (G-Mode, mute, mic, touchpad) actually light up
- GPU mode switch (Advanced Optimus / Ultimate)
- Small toasts + sounds for F1/F2/plug/unplug
- Two themes: an Alienware-style Legend and a Windows 11 Fluent
How light it is
| State | CPU | RAM |
|---|---|---|
| Window open, idle | 0% | ~20 MB |
| Window open, busy | brief spikes | ~40 MB |
| In the tray | 0% | a few MB |
Sensors are polled only while the window is open, and the status keys update from Windows events instead of a polling loop. It's a single exe, and the release zip is ~3.3 MB.
How it talks to the hardware
It doesn't reinvent the low-level stuff. Fans, power modes, G-Mode and lighting go through T-Troll's alienfx-tools (alienfan-cli / alienfx-cli), which talk to the BIOS / embedded controller through Alienware's ACPI/WMI interface. All credit to T-Troll and contributors 🙏
On top of that:
- Dell BIOS WMI for the GPU mode switch
- NVIDIA NVML for GPU watts and the OC offsets
- Intel DTT counters for CPU watts
- Raw HID for the keyboard and the macro keys
- Plain Windows APIs for the refresh rate
The stack is C# / .NET 8 / WPF.
⚠️ How it was built
Full honesty: I built it with a lot of help from AI. It helped me dig through alienfx-tools and Dell's interfaces, and write probe scripts that I ran on the laptop to map the power modes, light IDs and macro keys. It also helped write and debug the code.
I tested every feature myself, over a lot of builds, before calling it 1.0. AI-written code can have mistakes, so please read it before running it, especially since it runs as admin.
⚠️ Why it's only for the m15 R7
This is a personal project, purpose-built for my own m15 R7 (i7-12700H / 3070 Ti). Power mode IDs, light IDs, the macro keys and the OC limits are all mapped for this one model, and I have no plans to support other laptops.
On anything else it could do the wrong thing, and I'm not responsible for any damage to your laptop.
Think of it more as a proof of concept: a fast, lightweight G-Helper-style app for Alienware/Dell is very doable. I'd love to see someone more qualified take the idea and build a proper app for all Alienware/Dell laptops.
