"What was that?"
That was literally my reaction when this guy was first revealed. I was in the camp that initially hated how this looked, but upon seeing more reviews, it grew on me. Now that I have him in hand for about a month now, I do have my own thoughts on him.
I'll sing his praises first. The plastic quality is something you'll notice right out of the box. Its plastic is so dense and robust, which is nice for a Bumblebee figure. The sculpt as well is genuinely great, especially the face— pure perfection. I love all of the details they put into the arms, chest, and even his back. As a byproduct of the engineering, he does not have any backpack whatsoever. I also think his proportions are good, albeit a bit too big on the legs. He comes with his claw arm cannon which is nice, but hollow on one side which is a shame if you want to use it for his left arm (which he really didn't in the film). They also attempted to recreate the spikes he had in the film with the wheels, which is an effort, but definitely not the best. The transformation is insanely clever, with all of the car compressing into his legs. It's pretty satisfying once you get the order correct, and the car mode is really nice. Don't really have any complaints there.
Where this guy severely lacks is articulation and paint. As a result of the legs being 90% of the car, the trade-off is just how stiff he is. No ankle tilts, and the knee joints barely feel noticeable. The arms also work in such a weird way, with the shoulders clashing with the wheels, making for a pretty annoying posing session. I'm also not a fan of how the lower wheel struts on mine don't stay plugged in. As much as I enjoy the transformation as well, putting the ball joint sockets in the clear windows worries me, as mine already have cracks. He also really needed more paint. There are so many details in both the arms and torso that are washed out. I would have loved at least some blue on his chest. Lastly, it's a bit annoying how he's now a bit bigger than the other SS Bayverse Bee figures (not counting TLK). Just a weird thing.
He's not great, but not as bad as many think. He has a lot of good things going for it, but I just feel like it wasn't executed well. Still, it's my first AOE Bee figure and I'm happy to have it. I definitely do see this mould as a great Stinger though. Can't wait to see that eventually!
