Discussion Does formal education in psychology sometimes limit a therapist’s understanding of people?

Human emotional complexity is practically limitless. No academic curriculum, however comprehensive, can fully capture it.
But could formal training sometimes create its own limitations?
When therapists are trained to understand human behaviour through established theories and frameworks, do they subconsciously begin fitting people into those learned categories rather than understanding each person on their own terms?
I’m not questioning the value of education. I’m wondering whether the very frameworks that help therapists understand people can also create blind spots.
What are your thoughts?

Question can i get into a clinical psych PhD program and specialize in clinical neuropsychology without minoring in neuroscience?

I'm currently in my sophomore year and I'm already working in a research lab (specifically focused on neuroscience and social behavior). i really want to be a clinical neuropsychologist, but i absolutely suck at general biology and chemistry. ive dropped chemistry THRICE now and im debating dropping biology today as I have a D in the class and a C in the lab. otherwise, im an honors student and have a 3.8 gpa, so im not a bad student by any means, and i feel i could get into a clinical psych program pretty easily if i dropped my neuro minor (so id only be required to take one science, so id take physics bc its really easy at my uni). however, i dont know if specializing in clinical neuropsych would then be more challenging if i didnt take bio or chem. im still planning on taking all of the neuroscience classes i can, but just avoiding those that have a bio or chem prerequisite. so please give me your thoughts! i know i could power through but i know itd ruin my gpa, and if i could get to the same place without it, id much prefer that.

also, if yall could give advice fairly quickly id appreciate it bc todays the last day to drop :') i have 4 more exams that i could technically use to get my grade up, but again, i dont know if i have the time with my psych exams being usually the same day or close to, and my research job taking up most of my time.

Question USA PhD in psychology fully funded?

I keep reading that most PhD programs in America are completely paid for, at least for psychology, as well as providing students with a monthly stipend. I find this really hard to believe, does anyone know if this is true? I’m a sophomore in college right now, I’m leaning towards neuropsychology, but I don’t know how I will be able to pay for it if it really isn’t funded.

Resource/Study Seeking perspectives on tabletop RPGs for an undergraduate psychology thesis

I'm a psychology student currently exploring tabletop role-playing games as a potential subject for my undergraduate thesis. I've been reading academic research on the topic, particularly regarding wellbeing, self-confidence, and personal development, and I believe there's a lot more to understand about the psychological processes involved.

Through my own observations, I've seen players become more confident, less inhibited, and more comfortable expressing themselves. I'd like to investigate what might explain these experiences and whether they extend beyond the gaming table.

I'm looking for a focused, researchable question that goes beyond simply asking whether RPGs are beneficial, while remaining grounded in psychological theory and evidence.

For those familiar with tabletop RPGs or the existing research, what aspects of the hobby do you think deserve more serious psychological investigation?

Resource/Study Study tips for a psychological disorders class

Sorry if this is not the right place to be posting this.

In most of my classes, I use flashcards and active recall for studying. However, one of the classes that I am currently taking does an intensive review of various disorders, DSM diagnostic criteria, bio/social/psychosocial factors, treatments, etc. There is so much content and overlap that I feel as if flashcards would not be effective in helping me. Any advice for how to go about studying for this course would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Resource/Study Architecture, public spaces and mental health

Hi everyone! I’m an architecture student, and for my thesis I would like to explore how architecture and public spaces could be improved for people with anxiety, phobia, agoraphobia ...

In your experience, what features of the built environment can cause discomfort or anxiety for these people? What specific changes in architecture or public spaces could help them feel safer and more comfortable?

Any advice, research, or useful resources would be greatly appreciated.

Advice/Career Opinions on BSc psychology - undergraduate

Hey guys, I’m planning to go to a British university to study BSc psychology, but I’ve heard a lot of mixed reviews. Many people say that with psychology, there are not a lot of future job opportunities and it’s very restricted. I’ve wanted to become a therapist for a couple of years now, but I’m also concerned about the chance I might want to switch job careers. Also, I’ve heard that I can’t get a job without doing a masters and PhD, is it really worth the money to pay for a British university if an undergrad is inadequate anyways?

Any opinions will help, thank you!

Advice/Career Has anyone been noticing peer reviewer feedback is looking AI generated for those who publish papers?

I’ve put 2 papers in for peer review lately and both times I’ve had reviewer feedback which reads like it’s AI generated. Before this, I’d often get much less formal critique of my papers which was much more to the point. However, recent I’ve been getting 10+ pages of content, written in a very similar style to how LLM output looks. Has this been anyone else’s experience?

Question What stats should I run on a sample size of 10?

It's a single group pre-post feasibility study also looking at exploratory clinical outcomes. I have 7 clinical variables. My planned sample size was 27 but only ended up with 10.

I originally did exact sign tests, but my chair told me it's wrong because I didn't control for multiple comparisons. If I did a Bonferroni, the new p-value is so strict I think it's impossible with an exact sign test of 10 people. Do I just forego any stats and only do descriptives?

Discussion How to determine who to learn from?

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

I’m currently studying science theory and research methodology and my professors and my text books have really been hammering in that there’s a lot of flaws in the current system.

The problem seems to be that scientific progress isn’t the only incentive at play. Researchers also need to make a living, secure funding, publish papers, and advance their careers. These incentives can encourage questionable research practices, even without outright fraud. Academic journals have their own incentives, too, and the pressure to publish novel, attention-grabbing findings can come at the expense of scientific rigour. Peer review was suppose to be a solution to a lot of the issues in how research is conducted but I’ve learnt that they are often also very poorly conducted because the journals have an incentive for quantity over quality.

A lot of people understand that we have to trust experts since it would be ridiculous to assume we know more than them. But a lot of people don’t know about the above mentioned issues which leaves the door open for bad actors to take advantage of that using perceived expertise. Especially since the experts who are easily found tend to be more interested in fame rather than scientific rigour. Jordan Peterson for example, he is by far the most famous psychologist alive but most psychologists would probably agree that he isn’t the best expert in the field to get your information from (I don’t know much about him or psychology so I’m not making my own claim here, just an example I’m aware of).

So this leads to my question: what’s the best bang-for-your-buck strategy for learning about a subject when you don’t have the time or interest to become an expert yourself?

I want to invest some time upfront in figuring out whom to trust so that I can rely on their judgement afterwards, rather than constantly having to evaluate every individual claim myself.

I’ve subconsciously developed this framework throughout my life:
I assess experts until I find 2-4 in a field that I deem trustworthy. Ideally they have some opposing opinions so I get a more nuanced total picture. When assessing I look for red flags like overly confident, chasing fame, money etc. And I look for green flags like intellectual honesty (like admitting when they don’t know the answer and acknowledging counter arguments).

How do you approach this? Do you have a better strategy or are there particular methods you use to identify trustworthy experts?

Advice/Career Is there a way to pursue cognitive science or neuroscience after graduating from computer science?

As the title says, I just finished my bachelor's in computer science (BTech), specializing in AI and Robotics. Psychology is my favorite subject since I was a kid, but I have parents who pushed me to computer science (cause its the "Future"). thought I could take psychology as a hobby rather than a career, but after graduating, I wish I could do what I love as a career rather than join the rat race of people working for this so-called "Future". Sorry this sounds rough, but it is kinda pressuring to let go of my dreams. I want to research cognitive science or neurotech, at least with the skills I've acquired from computer science.

Search I’m looking to build an inter-college psychology student community in India — who’s interested?

Hello!

I'm currently working on building an independent psychology student community that aims to connect psychology students across colleges and universities.

The idea is to create opportunities for students to engage in academic discussions, research collaborations, peer learning, workshops and inter-college activities.

I'm reaching out to explore a possible collaboration with your psychology department/student association. We could start with a simple joint initiative, such as an online discussion, a psychology quiz or an academic session, and explore further opportunities based on mutual interest.

I'd love to connect and discuss how we could work together.

Thank you!
