Re-valuing Drafting Choices

A pretty major rework on the "value" field, and more transparency on what is involved in calculating it.

Changes not mentioned in the article:

  • support for 7.41e and 7.41f
  • stats on players pages now have 3 filter options: Lifetime, Last 6 months, Last 12 months.

Discussion Am I overrating these abilities? I see them often make it to 3rd-4th picks and it confuses me why

  • Overcharge

This is such a powerful buff for lasting 8 seconds on a 16 second CD at level 4. Great on right clickers and casters. But I see it ignored so often and it confuses me why.

  • Nightmare

Basically free kills on any right clicker build and also a great disable. Can be frustrating if you have teammates that don't know how to play around it but if that's the case, you can still use it for solo ganks.

  • Starbreaker

Powerful ability for any phys carry build. Great burst damage and generally safe to use, not reliant on other abilities to get value from, can be used defensively too. I never see anyone else build around this even though I've had games where I've absolutely stomped with it.

  • Reflection

Mainly putting this here as a counter to Metamorphosis/right clickers like Shadow Fiend. As someone who has used it and played against it, Reflection is amazing as an ability that can ruin the day for powerful right clickers but I rarely see anyone besides myself choose it as a counter for right clickers.

  • Waning Rift

Decent damage, strong silence, can be used to initiate, chase or escape. This is waaaay underrated IMO, I often see it picked as a filler (when I don't grab it myself) and I don't get why it's so underrated.

  • Little Friends

I'll be honest, I want to gatekeep this one. With any on-demand minion spell like Eidelons or Treants, this spell will kill most heroes in 2-3 seconds during the early to mid game. Crazy how underrated this is.

  • Nethertoxin

The premiere farming spell. I get this on any build I can because it completely solves any farming need. Super safe to use because you just shoot it at a creep wave and by level 3, it'll be able to kill the whole wave without any manual last hitting. AD builds can be very greedy for farm and Nethertoxin solves that problem entirely without needing to get any farming items. It also makes mid lane super easy, you can zone the enemy out to deny safely while keeping the lane pushed.

---

Granted most of these shouldn't be 1st picks unless other high priority picks are gone but I think most of them are great 2nd picks. I only end up getting some as 3rd picks because I can rely on no one else grabbing them.

Question? Does Rabble-Rouser (Enchantress's innate) work with Primal Split?

It would be incredibly strong and I'd love to try it if it works.

Discussion What's the build you dream of but know that you won't get in a real game?

I've wanted to build a hero with the most hp possible. Currently, I think the best combo would be Pudge body + Decay + Double Edge + Devour (Ancient Granite Golem) + Overgrowth. I'd get aghs and shard then a whole inventory of hearts. Hopefully, no one gets anti-heal or hydra. It'd be fun to have the Heartstopper instead of Decay or Devour, perhaps.

There are definitely plenty of not so many game-breaking but amusing builds like this one. Share yours as well.

Building tanky

After a slew of games where everyone builds agi carry's plus squishy stunners, I found that I feel in my average games, alot of people overlook the tank skills first, and building as a tank (not the 4 tank passives plus radi strat) but just looking to build as an offlaner seems to work pretty well

Bug / Broken Sticky Napalm bug on Batrider?

I usually level Napalm first on Batrider and it's fine but I had a game where I leveled it 2nd and the extra damage didn't apply on attacks or spells.

Curious if anyone else has encountered this (something else could've caused it but leveling it 2nd is the only difference I could think of from my usual Sticky Napalm builds).

Discussion What keeps inspiring people to pick no damage tank builds + Radiance?

I've never seen it work. If you get a radiance in like 15 minutes, sure it'll make an impact but it doesn't scale at all and I rarely see anyone who gets tank passives actually try to make a real build out of it. Instead they just stack survivability and are easily outplayed by being ignored.

Yet I consistently see someone in a game go straight for this if tank passives are available. It feels like there are a lot of people that think being tanky + Radiance is something OP when really you're just tickling the enemy. I think there are rare exceptions, like if you grab Ogre and just get really farmed on items so you can at least push really well.

There are ways to build really good tanks, but stacking passives with no utility or damage is not the way. What makes this so attractive to people? I've been playing AD since it was released as an official mode and people have been doing this since the beginning.

I get that there's appeal in being hard to kill but getting kills is a lot more fun, no?

Discussion Anyone want to join Team 2k in Rumble?

Me and one other guy so far, assuming he can make it. Not sure because they don't have a time listed on the website. We're not looking to sweat, we're either getting knocked out in the qualifiers or we are vibing our way to 1st. Either way is fine. If you like AD, if you like doing weird shit and are tired of people crying at you about it, come game :3

Question? Proximity Mines + Enchantress Innate

Does anyone know if the interaction between Proximity Mines + Enchantress Innate works? Enchantress innate gives +% bonus damage amp to units under her control, would proximity mines attack damage get this bonus damage amp? Any other unique units work with this innate such as nether ward?

OD should be nerfred/removed from AD

Title self explanatory, It pisses me off that the guy who gets first pick, now forces enemies to avoid getting him good abilities. Like its either whole team should not allow him to take good abilities/ one guy should ruin his build.

Bug / Broken Reactive Tazer /Largo shard bug

Game Id: 9022321290

Howdy everyone! Not sure if anyone else has experienced this, but the interaction between Largo aghs shard and reactive taser seems to shut off the ability. I think it was the first time I used the tazer on an ally after getting shard, the game switches to the detonate button, but then never switches back. You can use detonate for free on a 1 sec cd, so I think there is potential aftershock abuse, so wanted to find out if anyone had seen this before and tried it with aftershock?

Bug / Broken Nether strike/Nosedive bug/???

I've seen guys doing this bug a couple of times. But then all dota community found out how to do similar bug with largo and it reportedly got fixed.

I've just tried to replicate this bug with nether strike in the game and it seems like it doesn't work now. Im 90% sure i did everything right, my model just dont wanna rotate.

Since I'm not 100% sure, Did Valve completely fix the bug with flipping the model, and now it can’t be used in AD anymore? Or did I just do something wrong? Does anyone know how else one can try to recreate this bug? I’ve heard about using Nosedive, and I also remember that someone did something similar quite a while ago using Shockwave.

Why are players in ability Draft so toxic compared to normal dota?

Me and a couple of friends started playing AD 3 months ago and we are now ADDICTED to the game mode, and we have played it non stop since then, we are having so much fun.

But holy shit, the player base feels so toxic and demoralizing most of the time. We have a 1 or 2 toxic flamer, complainer, or a immature dude who gives up after some small thing. We used to play a mix a turbo and sometimes ranked and we never experienced anything close to this. no kidding I think we get a guy like this 10x more often than when playing regular dota.

I cleaned my dota+ avoid list and is almost full now after a couple of months. It took like 3 years of regular dota to avoid the same number of people.

Guide A guide on how to not shitpick in AD

A few years back u/Pajooba created a really good guide on how to draft. If you haven't seen it, go check it out. I think he nicely put into words what veteran ad players do intuitively. The points he made still stand today for the most part, only it was before the patch we get to choose hero model.

This is my attempt to go over some common mistakes people make during drafting phase and explain why they are bad. It overlaps for some part with what Pajooba wrote but here we go

  1. Picking shit skills because it's "fun".

This is an obvious one. If you are 1st pick then just pick a strong skill. Don't pick some mediocre skill just because you like it and leave Lina model or arctic burn to enemy. Also don't go for combos as 1st or 2nd picker, by the time it's your turn it will most likely get denied. There are cases like there are so many good combos with one specific skill that you are forcing enemies

  1. Going 2nd or 3rd right click carry

Try to fill in what your team needs. Depends on the pool but usually don't go another carry when you already have someone commited to a carry build. Or any position really. By going the same role you are essentially doing 2 things: 1:You are denying your teammate by taking what he wanted. 2: You are making your team composition easy to play into. There can be also 3rd thing sometimes: you are freeing enemies to counterpicking your teammate. As in, if you didn't take that skill, the enemy would have forced to deny otherwise your teammate would have ended up with OP stuff. But you did it for them, they pick whatever they want and wouldn't have to botch their build just to deny.

There are also situations that someone picks a shit skill that they think it's good but in fact isn't and leave good stuff to enemy. For example a guy 1st picks enchant totem to go for that awesome one shot carry build but there's empower and phantom strike in the pool. You are now in a weird spot where you don't want go for another core but you don't want enemy with jump, farming skill, dmg and atk speed either. So you should probably contest it and go for another carry. Anyhow, weigh your options and follow your gut, good luck. My guide is for the guy who put you in that situation in the first place.

  1. Combo skills

If there's tomb and rearm in the pool, or say napalm and spirit siphon in the pool take tomb/spirit siphon first. These skills are good by itself and the enemy will be forced to counter you. Average players are not good with rearm so forcing them to pick rearm is good. If you pick berserker's blood first you will most likely won't get burning spears. Spears is a decent lane bully skill, can be really strong with some other skill combos too. But that doesn't mean berserker's blood is bad, it can be strong by itself. Just keep in mind that by taking berserker's blood you are doing 2 things: 1: you are blocking burning spears from your teammates because you want it. 2: you are leaving burning spear combos to enemy, if there any. (dusa model, unleash, swash buckle comes to mind).

  1. Know what you can get away with

Look at overall skill pool, look at what enemies want to pick and decide which skill you pick at that specific round. You should be able to know that if you don't pick that good model now, it will be picked and your build will be ruined. You should know that you don't need to pick ult this round because they all picked ult already or none of them want that ult. Things like that.
