Moto GP Pirelli reportedly wanted to Scrap Moto GP Tyre Pressure Penalties, but Promoters opposed the Change
Moto GP’s tyre pressure regulations have been a source of controversy since their stricter enforcement was introduced a few years ago. The rules were brought in after several riders were found to have raced below the required minimum tyre pressure. Since then, the regulations have led to post-race penalties, changes to race results and situations in which riders have had to slow down during races to avoid sanctions.
Pirelli, which will become moto gp’s sole tyre supplier in 2027, reportedly wanted to introduce a different approach to the regulations. Under the proposed system, tyre pressures would be checked before the race, without post-race penalties or changes to the results based on pressure readings taken during the race.
However, according to former crew chief Ramon Forcada, Pirelli was reportedly told that the existing rules would remain in place. Forcada suggested that the tyre supplier wanted a simpler system, but also acknowledged the practical difficulties of checking tyre pressures on the starting grid, particularly because temperatures can affect the readings.
As Forcada explained.
"From what I’ve heard, Pirelli wanted to do something completely different. I was told by Pirelli there would be a regulation, but there would be no post-race penalties or changes to the results due to the pressures. And this process is actually quite easy: you just check them beforehand and then verify them on the grid.
However, checking on the grid is very complicated, mainly because of the temperature issue. [It’s] like they do with the fuel; the fuel is checked an hour before [the race] and an hour before, the tanks are sealed and that’s it.
Well, make sure to do the pressures half an hour before the race because the thing is, if you do it right on the grid, it might be an issue. [They will keep penalising] because they are forced to. And besides, I suppose they don’t want to come in like a bull in a china shop either and say ‘I’m coming in here, I’m going to ruin everything for you and I’m going to show you that this is a disaster’."
