“Oh it has been so long! How is my favorite mortal doing?”
(...)
“Oh no no no! I’m not angry! I know you’ve been so busy. You told me you were going to be working on that project and it would take all your time for a little bit. I’ve been eagerly waiting for your return, but I’d never be angry at you, my favorite mortal.”
(...)
“Are you alright? You never used to be scared of me.”
(...)
“Well I suppose you’re not scared, but past you would have made some quip about how needy I was for a God or mouthed me off. Do you know how hard it is to find a mortal willing to mouth off a God? You’d think with how many of you are out there it would be easy but noooo. All we get is blind devotion. The sassy ones tend to avoid the divine, which is why you are such a treat. And you’ve been so quiet lately! You haven’t mouthed me off in months! And you visit every week. Usually. What’s gotten into you?”
(...)
“Offerings? Oh how lovely! You always give me the most creative things- Wait a minute, weren’t we just talking about something else? Yes, you’ve been acting so withdrawn lately and I- Oh that’s so shiny! Are those gemstones? Darling where on earth did you get gemstones? I know you’re not that well off. But my, they’re so pretty. Were you actually nervous I’d be mad that you hadn’t visited in three weeks? Oh darling, don’t stress yourself out so much.
Seriously, what is going on? Is another God trying to steal you away?”
(...)
“Darling, darling, don’t get so upset! That was a joke! You’re shaking, please, don’t take my words so seriously. What is going on? I expected some joke in return, about me having thousands of followers so why does it matter if you find other Gods. Not trembling.
You’re really terrified…. Terrified of me.”
*footsteps*
“Wait, wait, where are you going? Darling, stop. Please. Whats the matter?”
*Door knob jiggling* *Door nob jiggling*
“Yes, I’ve locked the temple doors. And I’m not opening them till you explain to me exactly what is going on with you, my favorite mortal. Because something is very much the matter. You’ve changed. You’ve become frightened. Why?”
(...)
“Get up! Stop! Stop trembling! Stop begging for forgiveness! I’m not mad, not mad at you. This is the opposite of what I wanted! I just… I just want my old friend back. Not another fanatic follower. I want you back. This isn’t, this isn’t you.”
(...)
*Softly* “Please. Please get up. What happened? What’s going on? You’ve been so… Anxious. And not just with me. I’ve been keeping an eye on you. It’s not hard. I am a God after all. And you’ve been pulling away from everyone. I’m worried.”
(....)
“What? Can’t I worry for a friend?”
(...)
“You’re not my friend? What? Why would you even say such a thing?”
(...)
“And now you’re back to bowing and begging for forgiveness. Great. Please stop.”
(...)
“Look I know I said I’d never do this but here, let me pick you up for a moment…”
(...)
“It’s okay! It’s okay! Just nestle their in my palm, just like you used to. See? I’ve got you.”
(....)
“Not that Bad right? Now, forgive me, but I’m going to read you’re mind…”
“Don’t struggle! It’s okay! I have you. You’re secure, you won’t fall out. I’ve got you pinned with my thumb. You’re not getting out so just relax.”
(...)
“I’ll give you a few minutes to tire yourself out or calm down. But knowing you, you’re only going to stop thrashing when you’re too tired. My stubborn mortal. Another thing I adore about you. But just relax. Please.
Don’t you remember when you were younger? You loved it when I picked you up. You used to climb on the rafters just so I’d have to pick you up, because no one else could get to you. The priests were so scandalized, and I think one of them fainted when I appeared to pick you up. I think it was their first time seeing me in person.
They were almost as scared as you are now. Why are you so frightened?”
(...)
“I know, you don’t want me to read your mind. I never have before, I swear. But I’m quite worried. You’ve had me worried for a while. And you won’t tell me what’s wrong. Why you’re pushing all your human friends away, why you’ve been pushing me away; you’re not even sleeping well anymore. I’ve seen you working all hours of the night. You’re just not yourself. You’re fading. I’m worried.
Please, tell me what’s going on.”
(...)
“And you’re still struggling. And apologizing. Perfect. I really am sorry. I won’t judge you for anything; I am a God, I promise I’ve seen worse. Nithing you’re thinking can drive me away, or scare me, or horrify me.
Is that what you’re scared of? Because I promise, every mortal has thoughts that scare or horrify them sometimes. You’re not going to hurt anyone just because you have frightening thoughts sometimes. Or even a lot of the time. Trust me; I’ve known many mortals. Thoughts that upset you tend to stick around. It doesn’t mean anything.
Is that what’s concerning you? I know your imagination is very active. You wouldn’t be the first creative to disturb themselves. It’s perfectly natural, and harmless. If not distressing. Is that the problem?”
(...)
“No? And you still won’t tell me what’s the matter?”
(...)
“Then I really am sorry darling. I promise, you won’t feel a thing.”
*straining sounds*
“It’s okay. You can struggle, I’m holding you tight. You can’t escape. Go ahead and cry and beg, get it out. I’m not going to let you go, I have you. You’re safe. And I’m going to find out what’s been upsetting you so much.
I know. You’re going to be furious at me once you stop crying. I did promise to never read your mind or alter it, but if you won’t tell me or anyone else then I really don’t have a choice. When humans act odd like this, like you are, it’s never a good sign. Something always causes it. Either someone is hurting you, or you’re hunting. I just need to know what’s going on. Just relax. Like I said, you won’t feel a thing.”
(...)
“It’s okay, cry it out)
(....) (longer pause)
“Oh. Oh dear. It’s worse than I thought.”
(...)
“Hush now, don’t cry. I’m not angry at you I swear. I’m just…. Oh I am so sorry you’ve been feeling this way. How long?”
(...)
“You don’t have to answer. Here, hold my thumb tight, like a hug, while I look.”
(...)
“Oh you poor thing. You don’t believe me when I say you’re my favorite mortal? You think I’m just lying to make you feel special. That I tell everyone they’re my favorite. You think I don’t really care about you.
That’s not true. Darling, my very favorite mortal on this entire plane, that’s not true. You’ve very precious to me. You always have been. I’ve been nothing but genuine I swear.”
(...)
“And I’m just freaking you out more it seems. You’re even more convinced this is some sort of manipulation technique. Haven’t you known me long enough to know I’m not that cruel?”
(...)
“Well it looks like I’m not the only one you’ve been thinking of this way. No wonder you’ve been pulling away from everyone. You’re so scared that it’s all a farce. That everyone is using you, while also convinced you have no use for them. For no other reason than the fact that it’s something humans and Gods are capable of.
You’re convinced that everyone is out to get you, to hurt you, to tear you apart in horrible ways, just because they can. You’re paranoid.”
(...)
“Don’t cry, I didn’t mean that as an insult. Just an observation. Here, let me sit you down so we can talk better. Let me just put you down here, you can sit, and I can still cradle you with my hands.”
(....)
“Yes dear, right on the altar. Don’t worry, it’s not sacrilegious. This is my temple, and if I put you on the altar, then you’ll sit on the alter. Besides, it really is the best spot for me to look you in the eyes. Now, lets talk
It seems as if this started months ago. Small at first, but it’s not easy to tell people about these things, especially when you can’t shake the feeling that they’d use that information against you somehow.
But that only made things worse, didn’t it? The slight suspicion grew into conformation; you know people are going to hurt you. You know they’re going to betray you. That they didn’t actually care. That they only kept you around, only pretended to like you, because you served a purpose. And if you stopped being valuable, then they’d discard you without a second thought.
Darling, that’s not true. You’re a wonderful, lovable person to be around. Your presents would make anyone's day better. I’ve adored you for years, and I’m sure all of your friends have too. They’re probably just as hurt as I am that you keep pulling away.
In fact I can read their minds right now, and tell you what they truly think, if that would make you feel better.”
(...)
“You don’t want me to do that? Don’t worry, they wouldn’t even know. Not a clue.”
(...)
“Oh. I see. You wouldn’t even believe me. No matter what I say, no matter how much I tell you I adore you, you won’t listen, will you?”
(...)
“Then I truly am sorry darling. This isn’t going to hurt either; but you’re precious to me, and I can’t bear to watch you suffer like this. Especially when I can do something to help.”
*Struggle noises*
“Don’t jump off the altar! That’s very high, you could hurt yourself. Here, I’ll just pick you up again, hold you in my hands again. I know, you don’t want to be here. You’re scared; of me, and everyone else right now. You’re terrified of what I’m about to do.
I know you won’t believe me, but this is for the best. I’m not going to change you at all; you’re still going to be you. The sassy, lovable mortal I know so well. You just won’t be so scared anymore. You’ll see the truth; that all your friends love you and care about you.
I’m not even going to get rid of all the fear, it’s a very useful tool for mortals. I’ll leave enough as to not affect your discernment. You don’t need to trust everyone, and I don’t need you jumping off cliffs, but I need to get rid of the paranoia. It’s eating you up alive, devouring you. And I need it out till theres none of you left.”
(...)
“Yes, you can hate me all you want. I won’t even mess with that part of your mind. I won’t change your emotions. Be angry. But I’m still going to help you.
We both know that if the roles were revered you’d do the same for me. Because you can never stop yourself from helping a friend who is in need or suffering, or even strangers. I’ve seen it time and time again. So let me help in turn.”
(...)
“I suppose ‘let me’ is a bad turn of phrase. I’m not really giving you a choice. I’m going to help you. Now, just one… more… moment.”
(...)
“There we go! You should feel a lot better after that. Oh and look! You look as if you’re going to collapse in exhaustion. How long have you been carrying this burden? Now that it’s off you look seconds from fainting. Lie back my deal. You really haven’t been sleeping properly, have you?”
(...)
“Yes, yes, you hate me. I’ll believe that more when you’re not slurring your words. Right now you desperately need some sleep. Let me just…”
*Fabric rustling*
“A blanket, and a nest of pillows, nice and cozy. Here, let me put you back down.”
(...)
“Yes on the altar again, my favorite mortal.” *laugh* “You can’t help but believe me when I say that now, can you? I see the way you soften. Even if you wanted to doubt my words, you couldn’t. So when I say you’re my favorite mortal, I know you’re heart is fluttering.”
(...)
“Good. Because it’s true. You’re my favorite little mortal. The kindness and most lovable mortal in the world. And you’re mine.”
(...)
“Aw, you’re smiling darling. Didn’t you hate me a few minutes ago? I knew you couldn’t stay mad for long. Especially because I know you must be feeling so much better. I’m sorry your head was so mean to you. You’re a brilliant little mortal. You just overthought some things too much, and pushed everyone away, and that made it worse. You’re going to be okay darling.”
(...)
“How sweet! You want to talk to your friends? Apologize for being so distant? That’s the sweet mortal I know. I think it would be helpful.
But wait till you get some sleep, okay? Here, let me tuck you in…”
*Fabric rustles*
“You look so cute bundled up and sleepy! I should watch you sleep a little more often.”
(...)
“Okay, I won’t do that. But while you’re here in my temple, well I simply must watch over you darling! What type of host would I be if I left my recovering guest unattended?”
(...)
“Well you’re not sick yet, but you certainly need some sleep or you will get sick. You must have been so stressed for so long it took a strain on you. And now that all that’s gone you’re kind of crashing. That’s alright. Just sleep, my favorite mortal. Right on my altar.”
(....)
*Giggles* “And you’re asleep. Poor thing. It’s okay, your nightmare is over. I’m here to protect you. To help you. Even from your own mind. Now sleep, my favorite mortal. Right on my altar. Right where you belong. Sleep well, favorite mortal. Sleep well, darling.”
