Unusual Chinook Activity in English Channel
I've never seen a Chinook doing this in the middle of the English Channel before.

As many of us have noticed, there are a lot of AI-assisted software projects being posted here. This is an issue faced by other subreddits focusing on tech hobbies, and some of them have implemented rules that I think will be helpful here.
Both "Project: Software" flairs have a reasonably low minimum subreddit karma requirement to be able to post with them. AutoMod will remove any post with them that don't meet the karma requirement, and inform the user why their post was removed. The minimum karma requirement is only for these two flairs. Any software project posts that try to go around this by using a different flair will fall under the new rule #6 and will be addressed.
That said, since we're now officially allowing some degree of self-promotion and requiring links, we felt that we should redefine rule #5 to clarify that it applies only to monetized and commercial advertising/links. Here is the updated verbiage, with the old one below for comparison:
Flair Prompt - As mentioned in Rule #6, when posting with any of the "Project: Software" flairs, the below prompt will be displayed:
Your post MUST include:
If you see any posts with a Project: Software flair that do not meet the four items listed above, please report them to the mod team under Rule #7 and we'll address them.
Additional things to note:
Existing posts will be grandfathered in, and previous posts that were removed may be reposted if they meet the new requirements. New posts will be required to comply with the new rules.
As with the existing rules, when a mod removes a post for violating this new rule, a canned response will be sent to the user to inform them why their post was removed. Mods are able to add on to the response if desired before sending it.
While we're on the topic of AI, we would also like to clarify that the above rules are specific to the use of AI in software projects that are being shared, and they do not apply to posts or comments that were written with AI. There is some dissent in the community, but the general consensus in the community has been that a reasonable level of AI usage is acceptable for putting a post together, correcting grammar or formatting, or for translating from a user's native language. That said, best practice is to not include all of the excess emoticons and outline formatting that LLMs like to use. If a post or comment is egregiously AI generated, feel free to downvote it and move on, but please do not report it to the mod team solely for that.
We're looking for community feedback as we all get used to this. We plan to apply rules conservatively and gently at first, and will be listening to user reports and comments. If your post is removed and you believe it meets the requirements, please chat with us via Mod Mail and we may consider either re-opening it or letting you repost it.
TL;DR - All posts where someone has made some sort of software (AI generated or not) will require a "Project: Software" flair, and these flairs should curb the vast majority of the low quality and spammy posts.
Thank you.

I saw this video and was curious where to find the tracks?
https://youtu.be/pC1_NBHZm5A?si=Nt-G_EiW-gTNcZ3z
I've been getting into visualizing tracks and found adsb.lol very helpful, but 2022 is older than what they have. Maybe something regional because this was in the Irvine, CA area?
I appreciate your help! I'm new to the community and familiarizing myself with what's out there.

This would be very easy to integrate into your system. Use the arrow and +/- keys to zoom and pan.

Suggestions welcome!

I’ve never spotted a Predator surveilling the English Channel before

This is different spots between these aircraft’s, the Boeing was at the Nevada Security site (managed to get a Screenshot before it was “no callsign.” But the rotor sport is still active and it’s riding around across New Jersey.

Edit- I found the Boeing logs so here it is.

Found them both heading south after leaving Alaska today.
I'm curious as to the reason for this sharp deviation of three consecutive commercial airliners near/around Portland. The sky is relatively clear, just some high hazy clouds, certainly nothing these planes would need to avoid.

Air Force One making an appearance in Alaska today. POTUS was here for a rally in Wasilla. Tanker out doing laps, I’m assuming for the aircraft doing top cover.

Not quite what I was expecting to see this morning 😳
Once again the skies never cease to amaze me.

I built SkyTrace to experiment with browsing aircraft and airport information in one interface, rather than running an existing viewer. It’s free and needs no account.
For ADS-B users, I’d love feedback on the map controls and whether observed, estimated and missing data are clearly distinguished. Coverage depends on third-party feeds.
AI disclosure: I used Claude and Codex extensively for code, debugging and tests.

I have a receiver using the FlightAware 1090 MHz antenna attached to an outside wall in my attic. I am using 12’ of RG58 Superbat cable to connect to the FlightAware Pro Stick Plus. This connects to Raspberry Pi 4 8gb. The Pro Stick and Pi are in a second floor office. The antenna is about 20’ above the ground in said attic. It is an asphalt shingled roof, with wood trusses. No metal or brick near the antenna. I am getting a solid 100NM coverage, with some encounters above 150NM. Would replacing the RG58 cable with a LMR400 or KMR400 cable increase my range substantially?

WOLF28 is currently doing touch and goes, along with another Navy P-8. I’ve never seen a Navy plane list an owner, much less something like “AAR Aircraft & Engine Sales $ Leasing INC”… what’s up with that?

The older plane took off from Andrews and flew a holding pattern over southern PA/WV and the new one took off. Both are headed back towards DC.

I am using sdrangel and am wondering is there any way of logging aircraft you have tracked?
All I can see is an option to log received frames.

Every time a plane went over, I caught myself opening a flight tracker just to see what it was. So I built a small Mac app that does it without me looking.
So I built FlightBar. It sits in the menu bar, and when an aircraft enters a radius you pick, a small plane icon appears and flies along the menu bar from the clock to the Apple logo. Hover over it and it stops, and a card shows the callsign, airline, registration, aircraft type, distance, altitude, speed, heading, and whether it's climbing or descending.
What it does:
Your coordinates go only to the ADS-B API to ask what's nearby. Distance and the radius check happen on your Mac.
It's free and the source is on GitHub (Swift, SwiftUI + AppKit, no dependencies). macOS 14+, Apple silicon only for now. It isn't notarized yet, so macOS will probably make you allow it in System Settings > Privacy & Security the first time.

Code: github.com/kaanuluer/Flightbar
I'd love feedback: is the flying icon fun or distracting after a day? What would you add to the card? And is an Intel build worth doing?

The aircraft is at air & space port in an aircraft test center in California. (Possibly testing the aircraft or so.)

I have my ADSB Exchange receiver kit up and running. My account is all set and I see it in my phone. How do I add FR24 and FlightAware so I can feed those sites as well. I’ve used Google and I see that I have to set up the SSH…. Sorry but have no clue. Is there a site or video that will give the step by step process?

No callsign or type found? New to spotting so unsure as to what this is. Found on the military filter. I have no clue. Is it some sort of jet or stealth plane?

Hi there,
I made a web app, that uses adsb to generate 3D cockpit view. For Holland every house and every tree is 3D modeled. It runs on a Raspberry Pi. What would you think of it?
I've done a quick PiAware setup with a Raspberry Pi 4, Nano 3 USB radio and an old magnetic antenna from a WiFi router I had. It's working well in an upstairs window but, obviously, range is fairly limited.
I have a chimney-mounted ATSC antenna which I used to use for HDTV viewing and there is coax coming from it leading to different rooms in the house. I know there are adapters from the F-type coax of those feeds to the SMA connectors on the Nano 3 but I'm wondering if anyone has tried this kind of setup. I've read a bit about the issues with impedance mismatch and if I've understood correctly it seems that at around ADS-B frequencies the power loss on the connection would be around 5%. That seems small considering that the location and size of the roof-mounted antenna should provide overall much better reception.
I'd be interested in opinions about this from more experienced folks than myself.
Thanks in advance...
