I think these two serious night be my favorite runs of the two most iconic teams in comics.
Looking back on myself when these were released (I believe they both came out fairly close together in '97) I'm actually pretty surprised I bought either issue 1.
Beyond my respect for their places in history, neither the Avengers nor the Justice League had been all that distinguished during my childhood years, and both teams, but especially the Avengers, had been dragged through the mud of some very poor stories and creative teams (the less said of Heroes Reborn the better...).
Beyond that, I'd gone from being an enthusiastic Image fan to being completely burned out by the endless, slickly polished grim and grittiness of Image (and those who followed their lead across the industry) and I turned away from that style of comics. I was buying indie comics, Dark Horse, and my favorite of the era Helix's Transmetropolitan.
The only reason I think I bought both was that I lived Grant Morrison's craziness in Hitman, I respected Busiek's love for comics and the history of comics, and, most of all, I knew George Perez was an absolute madman and there would at least be something best from a living legend.
I lost my entire original collection (among other things) in a natural disaster years ago, and these two runs are both at the top of my last to fully flesh out. I have most of JLA, and it's been fantastic going back to read the series in order; I've recently just finished the Rock of Ages storyline, and it still holds up as a classic.
Anyone else dig these?
