Mod Post Mod Post - New Flair and Reminder on Self-Administered Peptides

Hi all -

For folks who want to get topical skincare only advice, I've added a flair for this. Please use this on your post when you want to request comments relating to topical skincare only. While I cannot promise every commenter will clearly see it, let's give it a chance to see if this is helpful for those who do not want suggestions for procedures or surgery.

As a reminder - this sub covers all things skincare - including procedures, surgery and injectables as well as topicals. It will continue to be a place where questions can be asked. I encourage you to curate your experience on here as the sub firmly remains a place to talk about the range of things folks do to take care of their face and body.

Another note, I've seen a number of posts and commenters discussing sub-q injections of peptides. Posts/comments related to this will be removed, including using slang (e.g. pinning). This falls under the DIY rule, is a grey area, and as such, not allowed on the sub. There are plenty of places on Reddit to discuss this, but this is not one of them.

Modmail is always open. Use the 'message mods' button on the front of the sub.

Mod Post Mod Post - Clarity on Credential Use in Posts/Comments

Hi all -

Recently I've seen a number of comments in the community where Redditors are claiming certain aesthetic credentials (e.g. Licensed Esthetician, NP, Derm PA, etc) when replying to sub posts.

Here is the issue - neither I or anyone else here can actually validate you are in fact, an accredited professional. That's a problem as this presents a conflict on Reddit's key rule about impersonation and the need to be authentic when posting.

The additional issue that arises is that the use of the credential implies some expert knowledge, and that a person on the sub may consider a post/comment where another Redditor claims a credential with more weight or authority.

When looking at how other reddits (and specifically skincare reddits) have dealt with this, I saw two basic schools of thought:

  1. Make a rule (similar to one in r/tretinoin ) that is explicit on the non-use of credentials in posts/comments and to have posts/comments stand on their own without claiming a credential.
  2. Validation of professional via licensing, similar to the way r/Blackskincare has opted do with restricted user flair given by the mod upon validation.

In weighing these options, I've decided for now, that I will look to make a sub rule on the use of credentials. To be clear - this does NOT prevent anyone from posting or commenting, but it does ask you to allow your post or comment to stand on its own without asserting a claimed credential.

I'll see how this works out as the new rule goes into effect. If there is enough interest, I may consider validated users via user flair in the future.

Thanks for to everyone for continuing to make this community vibrant and interesting. I will continue to look for ways to make our community safe and user-driven. Happy as always to take feedback!

What do you use for a fresh, even, creamy-looking makeup base on mature skin?

I see polished, elegant women in their 50s and older with the most beautiful base, even, creamy, supple, and seamlessly blended.

I have my skincare routine down (we all know skincare is #1), my skin is hydrated before makeup but I cannot figure out my makeup base for the life of me. I think I’m using the wrong products, and I’m tired of my makeup looking uneven and making me look like I just worked a 12-hour shift!

I have dry skin and want a simple, minimal daytime look and a slightly more polished version for dinner with family. Nothing heavy or complicated, and I’m not trying to use a million products. Ideally, I’d like a good skin tint to even out my complexion, cream blush, concealer, and a little under-eye powder if needed.

I’d love product recommendations and application tips.

MUAs, I’d appreciate your input. Do you have clients with this kind of fresh, creamy base, and do you know what they use at home for everyday makeup?

I need help for mature skin and I can’t find anything on YouTube that isn’t trying to sell me a product in particular.

Advice Request Advice for body SPF that doesn’t smell or feel like SPF?

Doctor commented negatively today on my arms, referring to freckles/moles. I immediately felt awful and self conscious. I get dermatologist skin checks every year so I’m on top of that. Currently researching IPL and Fraxel. I’m the meantime, can you recommend your favorite body SPF that doesn’t smell or feel like SPF? I really can’t stand the SPF smell that so many products have. I also don’t like thick or oily textures. Prefer truly unscented and gel or water-like if that exists. For reference, I use Supergoop Mattescreen 50 on my face and neck daily. I have tried the Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen for body and it was almost perfect, but it pills. Really need something that disappears into skin as much as possible. TIA!

Sunscreen recs

48 F and looking for sunscreen recs. I’ve recently tried Tatcha, Unseen Sunscreen, Colorescience. The matte sunscreens give me flaky dry skin and white cast, even when tinted. The unseen sunscreen feels like it is too greasy and doesn’t sink in. Ideally, I want a product that is a tinted hydrating sunscreen that doesn’t move when applied - does that exist?

Skin Newbie I'm an old skincare idiot. Help?

I'm 46, in peri,.with tee-tiny whiteheads at night, and I don't know anything. My mom never really did skincare and I've always just kind of stuck to myself so I don't have any close female friends to ask. Going into places like Ulta gives me incredible anxiety because I feel completely overwhelmed and then I just walk out. I don't ever wear makeup (except mascara some days). I recently started trying to figure out skincare and there's SO MUCH STUFF OUT THERE and so many terms and things I've never heard of that I literally don't even know where to start and then I get overwhelmed and don't do anything. Which is bad.

I've tried a couple of sunscreens but I haven't liked any of them (Paula's Choice tinted mineral - didn't like the feeling, LaRoche Posay - felt greasy and I hate the smell of sunblock, and some Italian one I found at TJ Maxx I can't remember the name of but was the best of the three). But I know I need to use it.

I also don't use a cleanser other than water, except occasionally I remember to use a squirt of Dr. Dennis Gross that someone gave me a few years ago.

This is what I'm working with haha. I did start getting a v small amount of Botox in my 11s earlier this year because I felt like I looked extremely concerned all the time and I hated that. I'm not looking for drastic changes. I don't really mind aging all that much and I feel like my skin generally looks ok for my age. But I know I need to take better care of my skin.

I don't even know if it's oily, dry, combination, etc. It's all so confusing and meaningless to me. I just want to know the most basic shit I have to do for as little money as possible (because frankly I'd rather spend it doing fun stuff). Can you please help?

In-office Procedure First-time consultation booked for aesthetic treatment plan

48F and I booked a consultation at my doctor's office for an aesthetic treatment plan, including Botox for my forehead/11s and laser/light for mild/moderate rosacea and hormonal acne scars.

This is my first time with any of this, so what questions would you recommend asking during the appointment? I can't afford to do everything at once - I wish I could.

Sculptra Experiences

I have been doing botox and did some light filler a few years ago for my nasal labial folds. Overall, generally happy and spoke to my injector (an NPR at a local dermatologist office that specializes in cosmetic procedures) about whether or not it was time for a little more filler or to consider something else (it's been almost 3 years).

She recommended I look at sculptra. She said that she likes the new formulations of it and thinks I am an ideal candidate. I don't have a lot of wrinkles, it's mostly just volume and fat loss related to aging. She suggested we just try one vial and one treatment in some very specific areas. The price is on par with what it would cost me for filler (actually, perhaps a bit cheaper).

I am a little nervous, though, since it's irreversible. I'm confident in my injector. She's quite conservative (rather under correct than over correct).

I would love to hear from others their experience.

Advice Request ALL 49 yo F what’s your holy grail routines to rewind time?

I’m a 49 yo female living in Florida, with combo skin that’s very sensitive and I’m on a budget. What products & brands should I try that are your Holy Grails? I would like to use tretinoin & sometimes use Dapsone for hormonal acne. The tretinoin always leaves my face red & burning and flaky and I’m not sure how to combat this? Thanks in advance for your advice as I would like to rewind the clock on my face and neck if I can with products vs a chemical peel etc.

Tell me your favorite bargain skincare products!

For years, I spent a lot of money on luxury-branded or at least relatively high-end and high-priced skincare products--at least selectively (especially vitamin C serums, eye creams, and neck creams). All along, though, I was aware that some of my drugstore-bought products were perfectly good, cost a quarter of the price, and didn't need to be improved upon. Recently, I've been conducting an experiment in which I'm (at least temporarily) replacing all my high-end products with lower-cost but highly recommended alternatives. I'm going to try this for a few months, and if at the end of that time it looks as though I've made no major sacrifice in terms of results, I'll be sticking with the routine indefinitely. So far, so good. Here are some of my favorites so far from my new lineup:

-BIODERMA Sensibio Micellar cleansing oil

-Timeless 10% Vitamin C Serum

-CeraVe Skin Renewing Eye Cream

-Gold Bond Age Renew Neck & Chest Firming Cream

-Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hyaluronic Acid Gel Cream

-alba BOTANICA sheer mineral face SPF 50

-cocokind retinol body cream

Those are just highlights, and the list will grow!

But I'd truly love to hear what your favorite budget skincare products are. Bring it on! Thank you!

Help with a line on my philtrum?

Thumbnail

There's a line running down the middle of my philtrum, from just below my nose to the top of my upper lip. I think that's what the area is called, anyway. And it's something I'm really insecure about.

It's quite prominent, too. The part right below my nose, in particular, feels slightly raised, and I can actually feel it when I touch it.

When I look at other people, I don't seem to notice this line on everyone, especially on people I find attractive. I don't think I've ever noticed it on an actress or a model either. It's honestly so frustrating because it's really noticeable on my face, and I feel like it ruins my entire appearance.

Whenever I look in the mirror or at photos of myself, it's the first thing I focus on, and I absolutely hate it. I've tried looking it up online, but I can't seem to find much information about it or whether there's any way to make it less noticeable.

It genuinely makes me feel so uncomfortable. Does anyone else have this kind of line on their philtrum? Or does anyone have any advice, suggestions, or even an idea of what might cause it?

Honestly, I'm not even entirely sure what I'm looking for, but the more I fixate on it, the more it destroys my self-confidence. I just really wish I could stop obsessing over it.

Advice Request Momma pooch what are my nonsurgical options? Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
25 Upvotes

I've always had a little fat on my lower tummy, but it got worse after having kids and the loose skin makes in hang down when doing activities. My muscles underneath are flat and toned, and I've lost 15lbs which is making it look worse than it did before.

What would work for loose skin, maybe a little fat loss and stretchmarks lessening would be a bonus as I'm not very self conscious of them.

TIA!
