Welcome to Yugioh101!

Welcome to /r/Yugioh101!

This subreddit is for helping people to learn about playing Yu-Gi-Oh!. Please make posts on this subreddit to ask for help.

Here are the rules that everyone should follow while on this subreddit.

1. Be Respectful

Yugioh101 is intended to be a friendly and welcoming environment for new players. Please do your best to make it so.

Above all else, treat every other user with respect. If you have a disagreement with someone, respond politely. If you see someone being rude, don't try to start an argument with them. Instead, please let moderators know by clicking the report button on their comment or post.

If you see an extremely basic question, or someone not understanding something simple, that's okay. That's what Yugioh101 is for.

You can recommend that someone read The Rulebook or Google something as part of your response. However, your response should not just be "Read the rulebook", "Read the card", or "Google it".

2. Posts must be for learning about playing Yu-Gi-Oh!

This subreddit is not for general conversations about Yu-Gi-Oh!. It is only for people to learn about playing the game. If the question will help you learn about playing the game, it should generally be allowed here.

You can ask about the rules of the game. You can ask for help with your deck, or how to play it better. You can ask for information about other decks, like which decks are the best, and what are their strengths and weaknesses. You can ask for advice about how to buy the cards you need for your deck. You can ask for recommendations about what sleeves to use for your cards. You can ask for advice on dealing with an awkward situation at your locals.

You can't post just to share your opinion about something. You can't ask about how to make money, or sell your collection.

Similarly, when responding to questions, you should give genuine answers which are attempting to be helpful.

3. Do not give misinformation, or use jargon

If you're unsure of the answer, don't respond to the question. Leave it to someone else who properly understands the topic. Attempting to explain something you don't fully understand will cause more harm than good.

If you see something which you think is not correct, please click the report button on it.

If you realize that a comment you made has a mistake, please edit the comment to fix it. Comments with incorrect information will be removed.

A Guide to the Rules Behind the Jargon: Responses using jargon listed in this post will typically be removed. Please see the introduction of this post for an explanation of why.

Introduction to Yu-Gi-Oh!

This post has all the information you need to start playing Yu-Gi-Oh!

Last updated: 11th July 2026.

  • Section 1: Different Yu-Gi-Oh! Games

  • Section 2: Learning the Rules

  • Section 3: Where to Play Yu-Gi-Oh!

  • Section 4: Making a Deck

  • Section 5: Forbidden Cards

  • Section 6: What You Need For Playing in Person

  • Section 7: Other Resources

Section 1: Different Yu-Gi-Oh! Games

1. Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game

The Trading Card Game is how Yu-Gi-Oh! is usually played in person. It is what this post will focus on. There are other Yu-Gi-Oh! games you could play instead, which I will explain here in Section 1.

2. Yu-Gi-Oh! GENESYS

"GENESYS" is a new version of the Trading Card Game which began in September 2025. It does not allow Link Monsters or Pendulum Monsters. Aside from those, there are no forbidden or limited cards.

Deck construction uses a point system. Some cards are assigned a point value. For example, "Pot of Greed" costs 30 points. Most cards cost zero points. The total point cost of cards in your Main Deck, Extra Deck, and Side Deck (combined) cannot exceed 100 points.

3. Master Duel

"Master Duel" is the official online Yu-Gi-Oh! game. It is available on mobile, PC, and all major consoles. The rules are almost identical to the Trading Card Game. However, cards are typically released on Master Duel a few months after the Trading Card Game. Master Duel also has a different list of forbidden and limited cards.

4. Historical Formats

Instead of playing today's Trading Card Game, you can pick a time from the past, and play the game the way it was then. The most popular choices are Edison Format (2010) and Goat Format (2005). You can find a list of others on Format Library. Yu-Gi-Oh! was less complex in the past, which many people find appealing. If you dislike the complexity of the current game, try Edison or Goat instead.

5. Duel Links

Duel Links is another official online Yu-Gi-Oh! game. It is available on mobile and PC. Its rules are different to the Trading Card Game. It has a dedicated subreddit: /r/DuelLinks.

Section 2: Learning the Rules

Read the Rulebook first! It's enough to get started without being overwhelming.

The following change has been made since the Rulebook was last updated.

Fusion, Synchro, and Xyz Monsters can now be summoned from the Extra Deck to any Monster Zone. Previously when summoning them from the Extra Deck, you could only place them in the Extra Monster Zone, or a Main Monster Zone a Link Monster points to. This restriction still applies when summoning Link and Pendulum Monsters.

Next, I recommend downloading Master Duel. Play the tutorial, and then the Solo Mode for a while.

At this point, you should know enough of the rules to start playing. After you have played for a few weeks or months, and you want to learn more of the rules, come back and read these.

Problem Solving Card Text (PSCT). Konami's articles explaining the meaning of words and phrases on cards.

Demystifying Rulings (Parts 1-10). YGOrganization's articles explaining various parts of the rules. Parts 11-13 are also worth reading, but are more advanced.

Fast Effect Timing Flowchart. You are constantly moving through a flowchart while playing Yu-Gi-Oh!. Understanding this flowchart is crucial to figuring out the order in which things happen.

If you want to learn even more, check out our full list of Rules Resources.

Whenever you're unsure about anything, ask for an explanation. You can make posts here on /r/Yugioh101. You can also join r/Yugioh's Discord Server, and ask questions in the "beginner_returning_chat" channel.

Section 3: Where to Play Yu-Gi-Oh!

Online

  • Master Duel is the official online Yu-Gi-Oh! game.

  • YGO Omega. This is an unofficial game. It immediately gives you access to all cards, unlike Master Duel, which requires you to earn them over time.

In Person - Find a store near you which runs local events

Section 4: Making a Deck

When making your first deck you should copy a deck list you find online. Building decks yourself is difficult. Before you can build your own deck, you need experience actually playing the game. You may need to make changes to deck lists you find online due to budget concerns though.

The current best product to buy is "Legendary Modern Decks 2026". It has three decks. Two of them are excellent: "Sky Striker" and "Mitsurugi".

If you don't want that, another option is to build a deck from three copies of the same Structure Deck. These are the best ones.

  • "THE CHRONICLES DECK: The Fallen & The Virtuous"

  • "Structure Deck: Blue-Eyes White Destiny"

  • "Structure Deck: Fire Kings".

YGOPRODECK has many deck lists that did well in tournaments, which are listed as "Tournament Meta Decks".

YouTube is a great resource for finding deck lists. Search for "<Deck Name> Deck Profile" and you will find deck lists for any deck.

If you are playing Master Duel instead of the Trading Card Game, use Master Duel Meta.

Where to Buy Physical Cards

If you can afford it, please consider buying from your local game store to support them. Game stores are often not the most profitable businesses. Buying from them helps them to stay open, and gives you a local place to play.

Buying the individual cards you need is typically the cheapest way to build a deck. Your local card shop may have single cards for sale, but otherwise you can shop online. Cardmarket is the most popular site for Europe. TCG Player is the most popular for North America.

Booster packs are not good value if you're trying to build a deck. You may get lucky and get some valuable cards, but you probably won't.

Getting Help With Your Deck

Deck Discord Servers - Many decks have Discord servers dedicated to them. This is a collection of over three hundred of them. These are great places to discuss a deck with people who play it.

Section 5: Forbidden Cards

The Forbidden & Limited List

The Trading Card Game has a list of cards which are forbidden from being played. There are also "Limited" cards which you can only play one copy of in a Deck, and "Semi-Limited" cards which you can only play two copies of. This list is updated every few months. Updates can drastically change which decks are good. Be aware of it when looking at recommendations for decks to play. If there has been an update, things have probably changed.

Section 6: What You Need For Playing in Person

Card Sleeves

These are protectors you put your cards into. They are an absolute necessity. If you play without them, your cards will get damaged. They are typically sold at your local shop in packs of 50-100, at around €4-8 per pack. Make sure you're buying the right size! Yu-Gi-Oh! sleeves are usually referred to as "Japanese Size" or "Small Size". Sleeves for Magic: The Gathering are usually called "Standard Size", and these do NOT fit Yu-Gi-Oh! cards.

Deck Box

A box to store your deck. This is also a necessity. You can buy a cheap plastic one at your local shop for around €3. Those are fine for starting off. You can get nicer ones for around €10-20.

Playmat

These are rubber mats you lay on the table to play your cards on. They are not a necessity, but most people decide to get one soon after starting. They help to prevent damage to your sleeves, and they're much nicer to play on than a table. Your local shop probably sells these for around €20.

Binder

These are like folders with pages of plastic pockets to put your cards into. You don't need these for playing, they're mostly used for trading. They're convenient for people browsing your cards. You can get a small cheap one for €5-10. Standard ones are around €15-20.

Pen and paper

You should keep track of life points by writing them down as you go. Some people use a mobile app while playing casually, but using pen and paper is required for official tournaments.

Dice

Most players roll dice to choose who goes first. You also often need to choose cards randomly, and rolling dice is the most fair way. Having dice with you is not strictly necessary, but most players will bring one. Your local shop might sell them for around €1.

Good tech options vs Angelechy?

Hey everyone, I've seen quite a few players siding typhoon (partially for Angelechy) and was wondering if there are any other interesting options vs Angelechy that others have thought of? I've seen Cosmic Cyclone and even Magical Spring come up in the conversation before but let me know if you have other suggestions that could work. Thank you!

Starting Deck

Good day, fellow Duelists.

I'm currently interested in going for the Duel Ignition - Swordsoul as a foundation deck of sorts. Tho I know the archetype is long powercreeped, are there any additional cards I can use to make it a little more competitive? Also asking if there are better structure decks out there and why them instead of this

Side deck help??

What would you recommend for side deck options? I usually play pendulum like Odd-Eyes, Magician, Performapal, Supreme King, etc the usual stuff. And my main deck non-engine I’ve kinda rocked with are 3 Ash, 3 Fuwa, 2 Droll, 1 Called by, 1 Crossout, and 3 Imperm. I’ve always struggled with making a proper side deck but never played with it growing up and really only got into the competitive side 3 years ago and took a bit of a break about a year ago. So coming back into it with a new format around the corner but would like to know what yall think

New Budget Deck if Habakiri gets shot

Hi, I‘ve played Master Duel for a while but only got into the TCG recently due to the Legendary Modern Decks providing an easy way to play a cheap competitive deck almost out of the box with Mitsurugi. So what could follow after it gets banned? Obviously no one can look into the future so maybe if all the meta decks get nerfed heavily it could still be playable but what do you think?

Help a new player out

Hello, i wanted to make a post on this sub because everytime i feel like willing to join yu gi oh i feel scared and i always go back to my other tcgs. First of all the format i would like to play is standard ygo, but everytime i feel like i din t fully understand the complexity of new card types and the rules around them. Also i don t really know where to start by buying products and neither if it s an affordable tcg based on how much competitive decks cost. I just wanted an overview for someone like me who is interested in the game and willing to join with my gf, but the both of us are actually scared of it. Also is the competitive scene healty? Or is it just ftk?

Why doesn't The Wicked Avatar get the attack boost from Clown Crew fiends?

Yes i am aware that i am committing clown war crimes against my opponents but i am really stumped by the non-bo between exactly fiends and the wicked avatar. all the other tribute summon support effects in the deck effect the wicked avatar when it is tribute summoned, but not fiend's attack boost. i thought that variable attack monsters could get attack boosts? what's so different with the wicked avatar?

Recently bought Modern Legendary Decks, soon we’ll see the ban list, am I cooked?

Hi everyone,

I saw the upcoming ban list and many ppl think that mitsu and sky striker will be impacted, do you think the impact of both decks will definitely kill them or is at least sky (I don’t even ask about mitsu, since I think it’s obv that is gonna be killed) gonna survive for competitive play?

I'm sad guys

Well, i'm 16 and just got into the game. some time ago i made a post about starting to play the game and needing tips. Now, one month after, i'm a much better player and i genuinely manage to win games now.

The thing is, recently i spent some money i had on a full mitsurugi deck and later on some ryzeal cards to make it even better. It all costed a considerable ammount. And now they just fucking announced the 34 cards ban list😔

I mean, Habakiri will likely be banned, prayers will likely be restricted or Murakumo will be restricted too. And so Mitsurugi will probably be a dead archetype. And about the ryzeal cards.... i'm not sure on what to do with them anymore. I don't know if i can use them in another decks or if they'll be useless.

That's sad man, because i was eager to continue playing the game as a newcomer, but now everything may change in some days. So, i gotta ask, what to do? I can't sell everything because i have no stores nearby, so i will have to keep the cards.

Do you guys think my deck is dead? What should i do with the ryzeal cards? Should i just buy ANOTHER deck that will likely be cooked again? I'm really worried y'all sorry for ranting😔

Angelechy bastion effect question

Hi so I have a question about angelechy bastion.

If you place bastion in the next chain he triggers to place shatranga. If the opponent activates a card effect as chain link 2 to pop bastion how does it resolve.

Does bastion still place shatranga as it is a triggered effect rather than the continuous effect

Or does it resolve without effect as bastion is treated as a continuous spell and must be on field inorder to resolve

Thank you for the help with this, I have seen a lot of conflicting answers regarding this.

Also if it still resolves do all angelechys when placed resolve in this manner.

Pure mitsu after this weekend

So I really enjoy my cool ass snek ritual deck, but we all know Habakiri will probably be in the this weekend's 34. So how do I build pure mitsu without habakiri then? Do y'all know a decklist i could base a Habakiri-less pure mitsu deck in preparation to try it out?

Legendary Decks & Legendary Decks2 Upgrade Suggestion

Hello!

I've started Yugioh recently to play with a friend who's been an avid player for a while. After asking a local tcg store clerk for a suggested structure deck to try out, I got recommended the Blue-Eyes White Dragon White Destiny structure deck. I got 3x copies as recommended by my friend, played it, spend a long time figuring out the combo and absolutely loved how good it is.

Without wanting to fall into the pitfall of just playing op meta decks, my friend and I decided to go a more 'narrative' route and play less powerful decks with thematic backgrounds, like Yugi vs Kaiba. The options in my local stores are very little, but a clerk suggested to get the Legendary Decks 2 boxset and even the Legendary Decks boxset since they had yugi decks that I recognized from the anime and was told were 'on-par' with structured decks.
But playing the decks from LDK were absolutely abysmal and felt the bottom of the barrel in terms of power. My friend even brought his weakest structured deck he had and I still couldn't play against it.

Putting aside how awful the experience was playing these decks, and thinking of somehow reselling them to get something back, I wondered if there's maybe a way to upgrade them to be somewhat respectable decks? Reaching the power of White Destiny or ideally in the ballpark below it.

Does the community have any suggested upgrades for these decks ? The LDK2 decks don't come with any fancy summoning like fusion/rituals or anything beyond that, so I was worried they too would be weak too.

If anyone has a suggestion for any decklists or upgrades for these to use, or even which other structure decks/decklists to maybe invest in instead thats at the low park value of 60euro/100CAD, then please let me know!

Barian’s Seventh Untopia ruling.

Just wanting to make sure I’m not crazy here, but does Barian’s Seventh Untopia work like Summon Limit where if it’s placed on the field after a player has summoned 2 non-number monsters from the ED, then they just won’t be able to summon from ED after that? The wording on the 2 cards appears to be identical.

I know Untopia is meant to be a floodgate, but I wasn’t sure if it followed the same rules as Summon Limit.

Any clarification is appreciated!

What are some Decks I should use.

I play a LunaLight Deck as a straight male and I beat my brothers with it pretty often but what I find funny is that they use things like Dinosaurs, Red eyes, Blue eyes, and Predaplants. Meanwhile I use dancers and I beat them with them. I think it's funny that Dancers beat Dragons and Dinosaurs so instead of ragebaiting and using another feminine archetype I decided to use a masculine archetype so what are some good ones.

Help a noob

Hello i am new of the tcg yugi world, and yugi in general cause duel links and very few hours of master duel doesn't count as experience.

Tomorrow I have my third local, I want to try to do better that a 1-2 (first local I used primite blue eyes albaz, won against sky striker but lost very badly vs branded and a gagaga deck) second local I use phantom knight (lost vs sky striker and branded again, won vs lunalight). I have still 0 experience, not know when to use my hand traps, what i should ail to block etc. Tomorrow I want to use sky striker or branded. But really know what version, for sky i have typhoon package or mitsu package (with ragged record of rites), for branded a pure/despia or with dracotail (I have to learn that deck it look hard, doing sole practice on dueling nexsus). What I should use? Thanks for the help

Rolad bridge into ars magna?

Hey guys, has anyone found any creative or general ways to bridge from one engine into the other. I would like more than one way for the deck im trying to build.

Any help is appreciated.
