The point is that a big chunk of the community being immature and impulsive in addition to sheer number of them results in extreme and contradicting opinions.
You can sorta blame social media since most of the people that complain about the changes grew up watching lets plays that played a certain way (survival, vanilla, no keep inv, etc.) But most people who actually play the game don't make a big deal about it online so all of the complaints really don't matter unless its game breaking (ex: no more water bucket clutch, no creepers, etc.) You can't expect everyone to have a rational council meeting debate when just about anyone can type on a keyboard and say whatever opinion they want.
I don’t think “keep inventory” is that extreme of an opinion. Both ways are fine but obviously you’re going to want to play either one way or the other. Otherwise it pretty much entirely changes the game. It’s either “penalty for death” or “no penalty for death”.
A huge part of the thrill and appeal to me in Minecraft is the “risk vs reward” exploration. If I just keep my inventory then my favorite part of the game is missing, and I’m not that interested in playing. I can just jump in lava and go back home.
If you have a group of people who all only enjoy building, the combat, the exploration, or whatever else but hate the part where you are trying to carefully make your way back home with pockets full of loot, then it’s absolutely understandable to run a server that way. I just probably don’t want to play it. Or I will play it just to be social and maybe build something neat but it’s not going to be my primary game.
