I live in downtown West Palm Beach, and I feel like the homelessness situation has been getting increasingly difficult to manage.
I’m seeing more people living on the streets, cooking in public areas, shouting, and sometimes behaving aggressively. It’s becoming harder for residents to feel comfortable in their own neighborhood.
I recently spoke with the police about the situation, and I was told that they don’t have a solution. The response was basically that if I didn’t have a solution, neither did they. Honestly, I found that response frustrating.
I’m not posting this to attack homeless people or suggest that everyone experiencing homelessness is dangerous. I understand that people end up in this situation for different reasons, including mental health issues, addiction, financial problems, and a lack of affordable housing.
But I also believe residents deserve clean, safe, and accessible public spaces.
My question is: What actually works?
What have other cities done that has made a real difference?
Are there successful programs that help people get off the streets while also addressing public safety?
What can a city like West Palm Beach realistically do when police alone cannot solve the problem?
I’ve emailed the city and the mayor but haven’t received a response. When I spoke with the police, I was told they had no solution.
I’m looking for practical ideas and, especially, ways we can make our voices heard.
I’d love to connect with other residents who want to work toward real change. Complaining isn’t enough — what can we do, and who can help us move this forward?
