My friend was their groomsmen.

They brought the bridal party out to get sized and bought suits and everything for the entire party. The suits themselves were $1500 each, and everyone got to keep everything after the wedding. Bridesmaids too.

Bar, photo booth, everything was provided and covered.

Still, its insane to spend so much for just 1 day.

Insane and kind of disgusting.

I think it's great that a bunch of people got paid a lot of money for honest work. I can't imagine how many people benefited from someone paying out that kind of cash.

How do you know that they got paid a lot of money?

Imagine how many people would benefit if these rich jerks paid their fair share in taxes.

How do you know these people don't pay their share of taxes?

If this is in the US at least, people don't generally get to the point where they have that much money to throw around by overpaying their taxes. Our tax code is designed for the rich to pay much less of their wealth and income than regular folks

Why would they, or anyone, 'overpay' their taxes?

Ah yes the famed trickle down effect which has been disproven time and time again.

My best friend's wedding cost over 400k. There were at least 50 people working that night, probably quite a few more that were working behind the scenes that I was never aware of. No doubt in my mind that it was great for the local economy.

The company I worked for split 1% of the wedding cost to all the staff. Which isn't much for normal weddings, but we had a few that were notable. Occasionally, the guests would tip, which was always so odd to me. We had one wedding that was over 450k based on the bonus for that weekend. We had to go out and get formal ware for it. The dress slacks and button down weren't good enough, I guess. I was used to the normal 30-40k weddings we usually had. We spent a damn week going over proper service etiquette. It was a wild wedding, and I am almost positive that more alcohol was consumed that night than I have ever seen at one time.

That's my thought.

If you're not asking me for the money, I don't care how much you spend. 400k or 400 million. Its not my money and it helps a lot of small businesses and workers.

400k is a nice chunk, but in this day and age it is easy to spend on a wedding. Especially if you rent out a castle or similar for a few days.

Just a drop in the bucket compared to Bezos.

Not kind of disgusting. Very disgusting. People that rich that can put 500k down for a single day of anything, wedding or no, shouldn’t exist. Tax the fuck outta them.

$500k on a wedding is not extraordinarily wealthy.

The people I described own like 15 jewelry stores or something. Nothing compared to the truly wealthy.

Hell, my coworker dropped $200k for her daughter’s wedding. My coworker makes 140k/year and her husband is a programmer making around $300k/year. Relatively ordinary jobs paying very high taxes.

Nothing like the truly wealthy who earn millions a year doing nothing because they inherited property / companies and have ways to evade taxes.

People spend 50k that they can't afford 🤷‍♀️. It's all relative to your income. Vendors got paid. Friends didn't have to shell out to be a part of their day. And maybe they didn't have to put it on credit cards. Honestly, it's disgusting how much you end up paying when you have to put it on credit!

I get the shock and disgust. In fact i think its a completely fine reaction seeing as that money coulda went to better stuff. But you want the rich spending stupid money like that

That's more than twice what I paid for a house. I got the house in 2022

$1500 suit honestly sounds cheap at a $500,000 wedding.

I wear $1000 suits and my wedding was like $20,000

They had like 8 groomsmen. Thats $12,000. And I assume bridesmaid dresses cost even more.

So they shelled out like $24,000 just for clothing for their bridal party.

But I think 1500 is like top of normal suits (precovid). After that its custom tailored or high end designer brands.

I shelled out about $150/ea for suit rentals plus purchased dress-shirts for my groomsmen.

I’ve attended a number of these kinds weddings and nearly all of the people have since gotten a divorce.

8

u/Apathetic_Villainess Jun 30 '25

There is a correlation between wedding costs and divorce rates, iirc.

I feel like there are higher rates of personality flaws that tend to steer towards interpersonal conflict in people who insist on grandiose weddings.

My partner and I do pretty well for ourselves. Out of the two of us, I’m the one that wants a wedding, but my version of it is still more of just a party and food with our friends and family while wearing a pretty dress that’s more on the scale of a committed weekend of planning.

I just rather that money go towards our future child’s education, retirement, a house down payment, vacation, mutual aid organizations…whatever.

The weddings I attended there were on the 500k type scale were beautiful, but they aren’t the ones that stand out in my memory as a great time. It was mostly just a spectacle to behold and go, “Huh….that’s wild! Didn’t think you’d ever need an entire room in this massive museum you rented out dedicated to handcrafted desserts with gold leaf and sprinkles on everything, but here we are. Oh, you flew in a string quartet with multiple members playing for the NY Philharmonic? Sure. Why not? A 15 course Russian Czar meal with endless bottles of Beluga Gold vodka? Sure.”

Really, the fact that I’m getting increasingly more Russian with my descriptions should be of no surprise to anyone who knows these kinds of Russians. They aren’t exactly a subtle type.

I mean, as a baker and foodie, I'd be interested in that dessert table more than the wedding... XD

Oh, it was good. I also couldn’t move for like 3 days afterwards and reallllly stress tested that dress.
